Kyuss – Thumb Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah, when I think about it now, I think he does say "so". It fits in better with its meaning anyhow, sort of a big "fuck off" - a reality check. The first 5 lines make that clear.

Anywho, I fixed the lyrics so they'll be fine now.

Muse – Hysteria Lyrics 20 years ago
I think that this is about wanting something so badly, yet it's out of your reach, and this frustates you till no end.

That something might have only caught your eye the first time, but then you took a second look at it and got addicted.

This can be seen in how the addiction in the song progressively gets stronger, ending up with "feeling my faith erode".

This addiction is so strong that it is "forcing you to strive".

Another thing that should be noted is how Matt Bellamy refers to the object of addiction indirectly in the chorus, but then in the last verse he refers to it directly. It makes you think that this addiction was always evading him until the last moment where the object of addiction is confronted, and it seems that it's all it's cracked up to be.

It's summed up here:
"And I'm breaking out
Escaping now"

Possibly the desire has been forfilled, and escaping is the only option left.

OR, it could be that he's escaping from his addiction. He realised it has consumed him.

And then, it seems that the addiction has taken its toll:

"Feeling my faith erode"

If we follow through with the idea that the addiction has been forfilled, this mean that the forfillment of his desire has taken a lot out of him and has drained dry, leaving his faith to erode. Probably faith in himself.

OR, if we follow suit with the idea that he has ran away from the object of addiction when confronting it, this line could portray his faith eroding in relation to the forfillment of this desire.

There you have it, my two cents on the meaning of this song.

Sorry for the length of it.

Pearl Jam – State of Love and Trust Lyrics 20 years ago
jaco,

Well as ginnye stated before, this song DOES sort of have religious hypocrasy in it. Considering that, it may be about the dark ages, (ie, medieval times) and how the Catholic Church was like a totalitarian government, not letting anyone think for themselves and all.

The "Promises" could be one of heaven, and an afterlife maybe. I think "the age of darkness" basically refers to the "dark ages".

This song isn't about religion, though IMO.

My two cents....

Kyuss – Green Machine Lyrics 20 years ago
You pretty much got it right there, Infinity Surreal. Basically about a conflict in your mind, whether to be greedy (hence the name, "Green Machine", which I think derives from the slang "greens" which means money) or to do good things, and be happy.

This line shows his conflict the most;
"I see pretty flowers at my feet
Cool breeze, clean air, hospitality
Pretty please, pretty please, pretty please
Get the hell away from me"

He's sort of embracing the beauty of flowers, when the greedy part of him takes over and tells the good side of him to basically fuck off.

There's my two cents....

I was reading a play, "The Crucible", and I thought this song was about people who supposedly "save you" from satan, and evil spirits, etc. I basically agree with OpiumForThePeople on this one.

BlackHoleson,

I have no other way to say this. So, I'll just say it. You are a fucking idiot. Just because people don't agree with your beliefs doesen't mean they're inferior to you. I could just give you a lecture on how every religion is wrong, but I won't, because I respect other people's beliefs unlike yourself.

Grow the fuck up.

Soundgarden – She Likes Surprises Lyrics 20 years ago
silly billy,

Yeah. I agree...sort of. But I like your interpretation, it makes sense. I always was under the perception it was about a girl who would just use men for diamonds and such. Hence, the bit;

"She likes suprirses, she likes suprises
Anything in colorful disguises"

And, she would just give men what they want (sex) and then take her share (diamonds, materials etc.). And;

"So easy to leave it or take it in stride
So easy to read when she's faking her smile"

Means that she really doesen't love these men and she tries to act like she does. She tries to put on a smile like she actually loves these men, but she doesen't, and it's easy to read.

"Dirty shoes and hiding her blues
She's dying to lose what she's finding"

Perhaps this girl has caught an STD or has gotten pregnant from living the way she does?

"Lips and thighs abused by our eyes
Acting surprised that she likes it"

The guys look at her, and she acts suprised on purpose to get their attention. Hard to explain, she sort of pretends to enjoy men looking at her, even though this may be a thing that happens often as long as she gets what she wants.

"Chocolate cream, an amphetamine
Torn at the seams, she's crying"

Not so sure on this bit. Perhaps by amphetamine Cornell is implying that she is dependant on chocolate to keep her happy, and she gets chocolate from the men she dates. I think that that Torn at the seams, she's crying is just a way of saying that she's severely depressed from living the way she does.

"Girlie dress and making her best
She makes up her hair for the 90s"

Girlie dress implies that it's something revealing, like a mini skirt, just to attract attention from men. The second line just basically says that she keeps up with fashion, taking into account that this song was made in the 90's of course.

"She gets a little I guess
She gets it more or less"

Basically saying that she gets sex. Except not saying it outright.

Alright, I'm done now. Sorry if it was confusing because I just took out random bits from the song out, thoughts were just popping up outta nowhere and I kind of took out bits that came to me easily first. Don't hesitate to comment if you think there's anything you wish to ask me about on my post, thanks!

Mamoruanime,

Thanks for that. I didn't realise that Cornell was Catholic, I mean, "Where the baptized drown" isn't exactly very reassuring ya know?

ThayilBeGod,

Seriously man, you don't have to be so harsh on people's religion, you should be tolerant. Believe me, it makes you look like an asshole when you rant on about Christians.

Soundgarden – The Day I Tried to Live Lyrics 21 years ago
Daddio,

With that part of the song, I always thought it was about how the person that the songs talking about tried to do confrom to society, but he ended up washed up, thus he "Dangled from the powerlines".

"Let the martyrs stretch"

This songs from the point of view of a depressed person, someone who's self pity makes themselves feel like a loser. His mind thinks everyone else is a martyr because he loathes himself, but he comes to the realisation at that point, that they are normal, and are just doing daily stretches. Y'know, just warming up stretches that people do before sports.

Or it could mean that he's trying to do something meaningful and the "Let the martyrs stretch" line means that, in his mind, he's trying to be a martyr, he's trying to get there, but he realises if he wants to become a martyr, the whole concept of a martyr would have to stretch.

I can't really say much more, otherwise I'd be repeating what everyone would have already said.

Just my two cents...

Thanks for your feedback ThayilBeGod.

And about Chris Cornell being Christian. I don't personally think that's true. Well, I don't get that idea from his lyrics. I mean, just lemme quote 4th of July for a moment, "Where the baptized drown". Would a christian write lyrics like that? I don't think so.

Although, I don't really know if Chris Cornell is religious, Atheist or whatever. Does anyone else know?

Alrighty. This song is about the loss of innocence and how there's so much bad going on. Hence the video clip, for example, it has an old man watching TV and on the screen there's an advertisement, it says "1800-TRUTH". That goes in conjunction with the "Times are gone with honest men" bit. And the burning of the barbie doll, symbolizes that children are growing too fast and having sex at early and so on.

Just one thing though, does anyone know what the bit in the video clip, where the girl eating ice cream, and she just lets it all pour out of her mouth, does anyone know what it's supposed to mean? I'd really like to know since it's been buggin' me.

Grunge Rocker,

Settle down, he's only stating his opinion. Just because someone else doesen't believe Jesus Christ was the Son of God doesen't mean you have to insult him like that.

Anyway, back to the song. I was always thought it was about people and their "Holier Than Thou" attitude. Thinking they're better than everyone else, thus Jesus Christ Pose. He then compares this person to Jesus,

"And would it pay you more to walk on water
Than to wear a crown of thorns"

I won't put too much emphasis into Religion, I don't really think this has to do with Christians anyway. Just people who think they're better than everyone else in general.

Just my two cents....
