Kind of Like Spitting – When Your Heroes Hate You Lyrics 17 years ago
She's ready to move on, and he's still in love with her, and knows the reality of it is there's nothing he can do anymore. This is her decision and although he knows the inevitable, he still does small gestures not really as a plea for her to stay but more as a symbol for her to have of him. That's all he has a teddy bear he hopes she holds and thinks of him and knows how much he loves her. The paper bag on his doorstep is like homerfaccee said, his stuff returned, a symbol of the end.

The Cure – The Funeral Party Lyrics 19 years ago
...nailerk is pretty close to it's meaning, but instead of parents robert had written this about the death of his grandparents and how he felt at their funerals..

songs about death are a dime a dozen, especially with music these days.. it seems every pseudo-punk and/or emo band has a video where some object of affection teenage girl dies. These songs are filled with cliche phrases of missing them, gaining strength to move on, and/or heaven awaiting, where they'll soon meet up with them. Pre-teens love it, they cry and musicians love having the next '00 version of a power ballad, minus the hair and fist of fury, but still 100% overexaggarated emotion.

I consider this song a true rare find. Lyrically he describes the moment of letting go, as the music drags you in as you hear every note losing itself in mourning.

In this song he captures successfully a grey moment filled with sadness and hopelessness, but more impressive still manages to successfully give the song and deceased, grace and beauty.

making this a song about death, that one who's lost a loved one can really relate to. it's simple, elegant, and endearing.

being the obsessive cure fan that i am.. when i was younger, i always thought there had to be a deeper meaning to this..

..i thought, it was about getting stood up, or maybe desperately waiting for that one person to call and all you hear is the drips of a sink, instead of the phone ringing..

..then i came across an article, years back where robert smith says "self-explanatory- me sitting on a kitchen sink, waiting for a call"

and i reread the lyrics and came to the conclusion that i have way to much time on my hands

also.. at night is influence by kafka.. but..

if you're into true beauty in words 'letters to felice' would be a great read.. but it would be nothing compared to Kafka's true brilliant writting to Milena found in 'Letters to Milena'. Milena would be that women he was looking for in Felice, a women who actually understands and gets the true meaning of him.. unfortunanly she is unhappily married to a hurtful man, and he writes how desperate he wants and needs her. They live an affair through letters, but knowingly, at least for Milena, that she will never leave her husband. As most know, Kakfa died young, as did Milena in a concentration camp.. if you like words that leave you heartbroken, this is truly a read to look forward to..

The Cure – A Letter to Elise Lyrics 19 years ago
this is the true beauty of cure songs, and robert's writing.. most of his inspiration comes from literature.. he takes it in, reforms it and spills it out in a form that makes the listener feel like the song was written for nobody else but them, that's why people always write their own personal stories and situations to cure songs.. he makes great works personal not only for himself but for the listener as well

this as stated is indeed written from a Kafka inspiration, 'Letters To Felice', whom despite what was written here was not his mistress but actually his later to be fiance. He had met her, and they wrote letters to each other long distance. I think a hint of this song comes from the fact that many people believe that Kafka having distance and only letters created an image of Felice, that in reality Felice could not live up to, and he also exaggerated his feelings for her to prove to his father that he too could love and start a family, he later fell in love with what was thought to be her close friend.

but putting it in a more personal aspect, as is so easy with robert's writing, no matter what the source. this song gives you a sense of wanting to try and trying but not being able to achieve the real goal of love and happiness with each other. he's writing to 'elise' to tell her that despite their best efforts, they both need something more.. they'll never really get inside of each other, and they're both fooling themselves. He wanted to believe but the reality of the whole situation was clear.

The Smiths – Back to the Old House Lyrics 19 years ago
it's about holding a strong connection to one person..

..in the start of the song he states that he obviously does not want to revisit the place of bad past memories..

..then he gets into the thought of this one person, making it seem like he/she was the only comfort he really had over there.. and this thought of them is strong enough to actually make him want to go back just to see if they're still there..

..but inside he knows he could never conjure up the strength to actually do it.. althought he would want to, just for this one person

The Cure – Untitled Lyrics 19 years ago
he says "again" several times in this song, showing that this is a constant occurance with him. he finds himself from time to time coming face to face with this ghost of this regret, holding him still in the past.

i never got a sense of lost love on this song, but more of a family member who died. wishing you could of not only said the right words but said them in a way that the other person would fully grasp and understand what they meant to you. But it's too late and this person is gone.

he talks about 'the devil futility'.. trying to fight out the feeling of it being useless... maybe his uselessness or how its useless to be stuck in the past because it's too late, giving the stark realization that once again there is nothing he can ever do about it.. and going in full circle here, he acknowledges that that's what eats him up inside, so much so that he knows he will always hold that regret 'i'll never lose this pain'

'never dream of you again'.. they're gone

The Cure – Faith Lyrics 19 years ago
i think what this song is describing is a failing relationship and the desperation of holding on to it, hoping and relying on nothing else but faith to keep you guys together.. because everything else has failed.

the first verse describes how he can't hold on to the things the way they are

'losing blind games' teamed up with 'idea of perfection holds me' is saying that he wants to be perfect for her, but somehow everythign he says or does seems to be wrong

"suddenly i see you change" and "but the mountain never moves" the mountain between them or the mountain of problems still stands there, therefore i would take the 'see you change' as he sees her change away from him.. growing more distant

and from the first verse you know he's tried all he can to no avail.. so he claims 'there's nothing left but hope'..that's the only thing he has to hold on to her

He describes her voice as dead, empty.. and yet he still begs her to trust in him that in time things will be good again because he believes that much in them, if only she'd stay.

my favorite line is 'please say the right words' and the way he sings it.. it's like when you stand there letting someone go you dont' want to and you still love and you just beg and scream in your head that they say something, anything or that you say something that will make the situation suddenly just change.. you desperately want something to change this situation

but nobody does anything 'justified with empty words' her words to him state clearly that she no longer loves him

so upon accepting this he walks away with nothing, but faith. everything else of his is gone, so the only thing he can hold on to is the faith of their love

The Cure – Play Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is about him wanting to let this girl in, but he can't seem to find it in himself to actually do it.

she obviously waits for him, giving him all of herself hoping to oneday catch his heart.. but it's not enough for him and convincing himself it'll one day be only makes this drag on longer

finally after years of waiting she finally gives up, and even as she walks away.. he tells her 'don't look back'....that althought he's left alone, it's better for her to walk away from a heart thats' grown to old, hard and cold to ever fully love her back..

it's like he lets her go, knowing what he's giving up but also realizing she deserves someone that can love her back....

Leonard Cohen – Teachers Lyrics 19 years ago
he's searching for someone to teach him how to use his heart (cohen has battled depression throughout his life, so i take this as him seeking out some sort of cure to his chronic illness)

the first two verses shows that he looked for the answer in women, to me symbolizing relationships or maybe just flings...

neither worked out so he continues asking 'are you the teacher of my heart?'

if you've read most cohen's work, the comforts of women is his weakness when bad, and his strengths when good... therefore i think these failed attempts with women leaves him to running into that 'lost man'

in my opinion i believe the lost man is himself, i would think this would be the point of coming face to face with who he was becoming. he states 'had yet to find', therefore at that point he has yet to be completely wreck and looking for something else to cure himself for himself, he enters a mental hospital.

"no one was sick" (physically) "but no one was well" (emotionally)

but instead of helping him, it seemed to have dragged him more over the edge, and still seeking his cure, or just some sort of relief.. he beings self cutting.. and one of my favorite Cohen lines 'some girls wander by mistake, into the mess that scalpels make'.. the nurses walk in on him. the last lines always gave me a feeling of these places being so cold, and lonely... it's not what he's seeking, and if anything broke his spirit even more.

after that i think when he says 'carve' it's more symbolic then literal. it seems that all else failed.. he begins just with negativity scraping away at himself..

....when he finally looks up to god for help, god tells him to eat (spiritually) to fatten him up emotionally and mentally. He starts 'spending' his hatred, meaning the further he went down this path the more those thoughts would disappear. For every good act it's as thought it cost him one of his angry thoughts. soon he learned to let others accept him and vice versa

leaving him in the end to ask 'teachers are my lessons done' to what they laugh and reply 'well are your lessons done'..

..he was always looking for the answer in something else that when he ask the same question he asked time before, and redirect the question to him, as to pinpoint out that it was him himself that was his own teacher and he should be asking himself that.

Hole – He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss) Lyrics 19 years ago
okay, just because i have too much time on my hands this early in the morning and there is way to much music knowledge roaming around in this head.. here's a correction.. phil spector didn't write this song, carole king and gerry goffin, whom were married (makes you question the song..haha) who wrote this song.. the connection with phil spector was him, along with lester sills, formed philles records which was the company that recorded this song by the crystals back in '63 i think (i could be wrong about this one)

this song was banned when released, and i guess you can see it as sick and twisted. but to me it shows a very real problem going on in the world. i've always thought of this song as written more in a sarcastic wake up call then as a song made to do nothing else but cause taboo.

it's a very real look at people who being raised in an abusive household, grow up to believe that caring, love, and affection can only be shown through violence. Therefore once grown and out of the abusive childhood home, they seek the abusive man (not intentionally) that will show them love in a way that they can connect with, through violence.

I particually applaud this song because it doesn't show you the 'i love him so i won't leave him' or 'i'm scared to leave him' (mind you i'm just being cliche with the saying) outlook on a women staying with an abusive man that you hear on talk shows. But shows the all to real point of view on domestic violence the 'well this is how he shows me he loves me' or 'this is what love is'. Not a view you read or hear about often because most these women, having came from abusive homes themselves dont' understand it's wrong. they don't seek help or file police reports, instead they stay faithfully by the side of these men, believing not only do they deserve their beatings but it's true signs of the strong love these men hold for them. Leaving us with hundreds of dead women every year. I think this song is a good inner look at the mind of that abused girl, and maybe even though it's a unhealthy and self destructive mentality.. it for a while there, makes sense to you. Letting you understand the thought process of the women who believes a hit is just a kiss.

Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart Lyrics 19 years ago
it's loving someone so much both ways, but it just doesn't work anymore..

it gives you a sense of this person still being in a relationship with the narrator, but emotionally they're drifting away.. they lose all ambition to continue trying to make this work and slowly the two start paving different paths in life that don't seem to fit together..

the narrator seems to want to hold on to one more desperate attempt to make it work.. but it seems to only make the wedge between them greater

leaving.. love to tear them apart

Joy Division – In a Lonely Place Lyrics 19 years ago
to relate to this song is to know the the true meaning of loss..

...it's desperately holding on to the only thing left to grab from this person.... 'marble and stone' their tombstone, stuck in the constant pain of their lost, that you're left with nothing else but the thought of awaiting your own self served death but 'the cord breaks'...

...so all you can do is wish that they were but there with you now...

..i'm a huge joy division fan, but i think this is the only song that the way ian curtis sings 'how i wish you were here with me now' not only shows the emotion (as most his songs do) but is sung so painfully and desperate that it leaves you too yearning for the return of this lost in this song

Material Issue – Valerie Loves Me Lyrics 19 years ago
this gets me as a guy who knows valerie, and valerie is stuck in a world of her own selfishness... she convinces him that she loves him

..so he waits for her.. as he watches her skip from man to man and always in the center of the social life...

...his dedication to her is more then shown here... but obviously as would with most, he tires of waiting and moves on..

..so in the end he shows how valerie is older now, her taking love for granted 'love was on a string' has left her alone with nothing but her memories.. that she probably holds dear to her as her happiness, because there is nothing else there..

..so she relieves when she was the center of it all and could have anything she ever wanted.. but him anymore

Hole – Valerie Loves Me Lyrics 19 years ago
the part that is missing is..

"between the walk to the club and all the drinks she'll have in a crowded room where everybody leaves too soon
I only hope that she remembers me"

and yes it is a material issue cover, but whore?..umm hardly.. i think what Jim Ellison was trying to describe valerie as a girl who was in the center of the social scene.. parties, clubs, men at her feet...

obviously the narrator and valerie know each other very well.... in his heart he tells himself that 'valerie loves me', as i really do believe she does (but that's just my opinion).. but she's so tied up in this world that she lets him sit, wait and watch her as she continues on from man to man, party to party, believing he'll still be there when she's ready to settle down, because his dedication is shown in this song 'i would give my whole life to her'.. and he does wait for her.. hoping that between her life that she deems important she stops and thinks of him every once and a while ('stolen moment of her thoughts)'

..there's no real transition to show you the change of mood.. but obviously as it would us all, tired him out waiting for her...

so now he reflects on her being older and holding on to the memories of her youth, because only then did she have the world in her hands, and could take love for granted..... and now she lost her chance of ever having someone who would truly appreciate her, and maybe taking it for granted because she never took the time to appreciate him

this is actually one of the songs i want played at my funeral..

it's a fine example of marc almond writing, looking back at his youth, there are plenty of songs he does this.. but instead of admiring and phrasing his youth, this one takes a different turn and points out his mistakes, selfishness, the lost of friends, love taken for granted,.. he's older and wiser looking back at it and realizing his foolishness and the fact that those years of carelessness are gone...

Social Distortion – Footprints on My Ceiling Lyrics 19 years ago
he's with this girl and 'wanna go on without a care'... he never really opens himself up with her about his inner demons, past that still haunts him...

..he wants to act like nothings wrong, the verse reflects that he's going through the motions of talking, listening, living... but obviously it isn't truthful, because he's not open about his own self.. therefore it's like he's just taking the full self she's giving him, but he's not giving it in return.. so the first chorus ends with 'how do you keep it all inside'?

..the end of the second chorus verse states 'how do you treat your best friend'.. prpbably implying his unwillingness to open up to her, and return what she gives.. is a cruel way to treat what you consider your best friend.. her

My heart is heavy, slowly sinking
I redirect my desperate thinking

this has caused problems as he states 'you ain't comin' round here no more'. but keeping true to the theme as the verse i pasted above states.. he redirects his worriness and doesn't
open up to her about his fears or the way he feels..

..so instead he 'kiss her red full lips, Like I did the very first time' ..keeping true to the theme of the song.. keeping it all inside and acting like nothing is wrong.

i agree it's in the percpective of the song..

...it's those songs that i'm sure as we all know, helped us grow up and deal with things..

it's the song asking, that when you grow and those problems are gone, will you still remember it? those songs become part of your life, and will you move on and leave it in the corner or will you hold them as an important part of growing up, and still recognize their importance even if it doesn't relate to you anymore.

..this song doesnt' really give a sense of begging for him back, but better yet just wanting another day to show him her true feelings, but she wonders if it would even matter... if another day would change anything..

..she's letting go, but wishes for another day to show him, but she ask 'what's in a day?', that's not enough time to undo the damage she's done

i think it's a reference on how she's good but not good enough, pointing out her good qualities and her tact and skill but still downplaying it by singing it in a tone of indifference, and following it up with a statement that lessens the value of her talent

In my opinion the true meaning of the song comes out in the last verses.. on how she could never 'look a man in the eye and tell my secret plans' and 'i can take a vow
and i can wear a ring
and i can make you promises but
they won't mean a thing'...to me this says that all her good qualites are downplayed through out the song because her failure is in love

Leading to the last lines that she begs for somebody to fix her, because despite how much some of us would love to have her skills to her the one skill she would like to have makes the rest of her talents seem much like she addressed them in this song unimportant

The last two lines just soudn like desperation, telling you her flaws in love but still begging for a chance for someone to love her... somebody to try to fix her... come on she'll even pay you

Who invented the typical girl?
Who's bringing out the new improved one?
And there's another marketing ploy
Typical girl gets the typical boy

i think this phrase sums it up pretty much.. the rest is just a description of what girls are suppose to represent and be..

marketing ploys, society rules, culture gender definitions.. whichever way you look at it, they place women/girls in a catagory that only allows certain reactions and behaviors from them..

...but the best line would have to be 'typical girls fell like hell'.. trying to conform to what they're suppose to be they end up losing themselves and feeling shitty about it

..the narrator is still in love with her despite his bitterness about her breaking his heart, and knows that her dreams won't work out or maybe he hopes they won't in his own vengeful mind..

she made him fall over heels, and left him for her own reasons and as much as he hopes the worse for her.. he has to admit he's still in love with her

The Sisters of Mercy – Some Kind Of Stranger Lyrics 19 years ago
In the beginning verse I do think he's talking about an actual relationship he had.. one that mean something.. but promiscuity got in the way..

..the first verse says 'lord i tried to say but i heard a million conversations going where they've been before'... as he was leaving, like he wanted to come clean or go along with the line of 'words got in the way', which usually implies lies or falsehood.. but thinking it useless that would continue but yet another arguement.. so he lingers undecided at the door.. shall he continue or leave?

so basically the rest of the song would just conform to the dedication to pleasures of flesh, as teh chorus suggest..

He admits that faithfullness and promises are untrue in his world, but if you 'hold on tight to what you find you might not mind to much' , which is backed up by, " the memories (the ones you get from the ones you love) will last for years.. BUT names are JUST souveiners"

still reflecting back on the first verse which implies a relationship that meant something, he starts going on, on these people who he's with he really doesn't care for their names, their stories.. and the line 'i can wait a long, long time before i hear another love song' placed at that point and the way he sings it, would suggest to me that these random people he doesn't want details about are just ways to avoid any real relationship again or to deal with real emotions, maybe because of hurt or bitterness.. this is left unknown..

the way angel is placed at first, it would seem that his door was opened wide looking for some sort of saviour from this to come in..

..as the last just state stranger.... it would suggest to me a lost of hope.. and just giving in

Franz Ferdinand – The Dark of the Matinee Lyrics 19 years ago
personally i just think it's a simple love song, if you want it to connect with you in a hetero or homosexual way, as in most songs.. it's easy to see it that way.. but i don't think arguing whether it's hetero or homo is really worth the time, it's whatever you want to make it..

i assume it's a time frame of high school.. the way he talks about this girl/boy (take your choice) it gives me a feeling of that akward teen crush stage.. at bit insecure (staring at shoes), a bit obsessed (time every journey, i bump into you ACCIDENTLY)....

the lines:
Of the boys I hate, all the girls I hate
All the words I hate, all the clothes I hate
How I'll never be anything I hate
You smile, mention something that you like
Oh, how you'd have a happy life
If you did the things you like

i really believe don't have any deeper meaning then used to create and show his disatisfication and unhappiness at that point in time..

...it also shows the difference between the two.. he sees more then the 'academic factory', using the theathre as an escaping point, picturing something bigger.. maybe fame.. something more then what he has at that point...

..it's a stereotype that people who spend much to time at movie theathers are dreamers... i take that and put it into context for this song.... he's a dreamer hoping for something more

that line also gives you an understanding on how he's different from her.. and most.. most people focus on the things they do like, and what they want to do..

..his view is a bit more pesstimistic.. he focuses on what he hates, and what he doesn't want to be.. probably giving him the drive and ambition that leads to the next verse...

....he's on BBC now, he's made it. When i think he says 'my smiles are so easy now' i don't think he means that in anything else but that...

...in the 'academic factory' his unhappiness is clearly stated, the whole song is about his dissatisfication and his escape from it..

..i think although he questions what 'making it' really is.. some of the dissatisfication that was present in younger days are gone.. and he's finally happy

I don'tthink it's that the man doesn't love her anymore..

I always got a strong sense of love from him for her. But he realizes that this one moment they're sharing staring at the edge of the deep green sea, is nothing more then a moment that will lead to nothing but heartbreak. She seems to be in a bit more in denial about the situation, as she forces or hopes to belive in him....

he plays along...

"i lie to keep her happy"
"like she wants to believe in me.. so i try"

it's the realization of having to let go of the only thing that makes you feel "colourfully-see-through-head", and although he begs 'please stay, not just for today'...they both know what they're seeking is 'forever gone'
