Cloud Cult – It's What You Need Lyrics 16 years ago
Steve is where I first heard of this wonderful band.

Simon and Garfunkel – At The Zoo Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think it's necessarily traits or racism, but somewhere in between. Or both. Simon is using animal caricatures to represent ethnic or cultural archetypes/stereotypes present in New York. "Pigeons plot in secrecy" is a reference to the stool pigeon, which brings associations of mob culture and the Italians. The "hamsters" that "turn on frequently" can be taken to symbolize the junkies and stoners of the day. He hints at this with the introductory "monkeys stand for honesty," putting it right out there that these animals are merely façade.

Yes indeed.

Menomena – Oahu Lyrics 17 years ago
I still can't tell what the first word is, but I think the phrase is, "When the hull struck ____ with and iceberg, lurking in the deep"

The Beatles – Besame Mucho Lyrics 17 years ago
I like Dean Martin's version but I'd have to say that this one is my favorite. The energy is so great a little bit different from the rest of the Beatles' more 'canon' songs.

Dean Martin – Besame Mucho Lyrics 17 years ago
I always feel guilty when I leave a comment not contributing to the discussion of meaning but I really just love this song. The way the Beatle's do it is just so great.

Chuck Berry – Maybellene Lyrics 17 years ago
Simon & Garfunkel's live cover of this is also something to check out if you like that kind of thing. It's shorter and tacked on to the end of Kodachrome, but it has their distinctive stamp on it for sure.

Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs – Wooly Bully Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah exactly. L-seven as in loser, square. When you put your hands up to make the square sign, your thumb and forefinger of the left hand make an L while those of the right hand make a seven, thus L7.
Also I love hearing the word "apparently" in front of that statement. I can't wait until I see someone say something like, "Yes, apparently 'the bomb' was a phrase from the seventies used to mean cool, but is often misunderstood in today's slang world."
Haha, seriously guys.

Third Eye Blind – Darwin Lyrics 18 years ago
"And the grandson of an alien wears his snakeskin boots
And shows his reptile roots"

That seems to be somewhat of a Bowie reference to me.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Tuesday Moon Lyrics 18 years ago
This song has no comments!? This is one of my favorite songs from Everything Is (or Hype City Soundtrack, whichever you prefer).

It sounds to me like this song is about a (self-)destructive love affair, perhaps with Tuesday being their anniversary? That being said, I don't think in this case that its being destructive is necessarily a bad thing, just a rolling, crashing, jumping kind of destructive where they're both trying to consume so much of eachother. The kind where their love is new and feels (or is) like they're tripping on something (e.g. "...Your love is like a drunken stupor...").

Also, the dialogue in the beginning seems like a retelling of a dream (or possibly a trip, though I'm of the opinion that not all great songs have something to do with drugs).

Neutral Milk Hotel – April 1st Lyrics 18 years ago
It's from another album, not On Avery Island. The one on Avery Island is "Avery Island - April 1st" for a reason. This is from Hype City Soundtrack.

Third Eye Blind – Wake for Young Souls Lyrics 18 years ago
I think maybe it's about both the death of youth/innocent times, and the death of a girlfriend. That seems to fit with him having a picture of her in high school, and with him saying that he doesn't see her mom anymore, not like before. Of course he wouldn't come around as much, because like the lyrics say, her mom hasn't forgotten about him, but she doesn't like to be reminded because it brings back the pain of losing a daughter.

This song is simply epic. There's no other way to describe it. It's amazing.

Brakes – Cheney Lyrics 19 years ago
A little too blunt for my tastes. Protest songs should have a little bit more... well... thought to them. Whatever floats your boat though.

MC Lars – Hot Topic Is NOT Punk Rock Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, seriously guys. "Punk Rock" in this song doesn't refer to the punk scene, clothes or even the music. He's talking about punk rock ethics, which ARE the love of music, integrity, and not subscribing to Hot Topic's brand of "non-conformity" among other things. Punk Rock is just a catchier way of saying be yourself, create your OWN image, and fuck everyone else. Oh and fotthepope? Arguing on the internet is TOTALLY punk rock! Let's fight! :P

The Boy Least Likely To – Warm Panda Cola Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm pretty sure that "Warm Panda Cola" is not the brand name. I think that the brand is just Panda Cola, and that "warm" would just happen to be the genereal temperature at which the drink is in the context of the song.

Jawbreaker – Bivouac Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the clips about the bivouac are somehow symbolic. It's talking about the ants have no real homes and build shelters out of their own bodies. I think in a way that somehow relates to being a musician and life on the road. Or maybe how Blake himself feels how he doesn't really belong anywhere.

Violent Femmes – Kiss Off Lyrics 20 years ago
I always thought the line was "Nine for... I lost count" just because it went along with the whole "I forget what eight is for" thing. A friend gave me the cd, but not the jewel case, so I don't know if it ever had the lyrics in there or what., so don't bite my head off if it actually says that in the liner notes. Innywho, I really love this song, the first time I heard it I thought he was just yelling at some girl that broke his heart. I didn't listen to the lyrics very well, but it reminded me of the old saying of "One for the money, two for the show..." etc. So I did'nt really associate it with actually, phyisically taking anything. It's strange because this song is just so energetic, listening to it always makes me happy, yet the lyrics are so sad. I guess there are quite a few songs like that though...

While that may be, and probably is true, AppleShampoo72, you're one to talk. I do beleive your name comes from a certain, oh...Blink 182? Weren't they kinda the pioneers of suckage on MTV? Not saying I hate Blink or anything, but come on. Let's quit with the pots calling the kettles black.

Another Direction – Isis Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is incredible. It seems to me that it might be about someone's love going away, and they don't know when they'll see eachother again. And maybe they hadn't planned for whatever it was to happen, but sometimes things happen that you just can't help...

God, it is SO nice to see that there are some people out there who appreciate music, not to mention this site. This is what this site is meant to be, and you guys have no idea how much I love the way this discussion is going. I just had to say that

I think this song is a reflection. On life, on religion, on the world. It's beautifully written both lyrically and musically. IIt has a haunting effect that I just love. It's one of my favorites.

Fall Out Boy – Sugar, We're Goin Down Lyrics 20 years ago
Okay, people, jeeze. It makes me sad to see all of you fight so bitterly about a song. That's all it is, a song. Its not going to matter in a couple years, or ever in your lifetime, what someone else on an internet forum thought of a band or a song. Some people like Fall Out Boy, okay? Maybe that's a bad thing, maybe it isn't, I don't decide these things for anyone. And neither do any of you. Some people are going to like things that you deem stupid, it's inevitable. And likewise, you are going to like things that other people deem stupid. These are your opinions, and you can't force anyone to go along with yours anymore than they can force you to agree with theirs.

I'm not particularly a fan of Fall Out Boy, or the Pop/Punk genre either, but I like this song, and so do other people, and those of you who don't are going to have to be okay with that, because you're likely not going to be able to change our minds on it, just the same as I'm not going to be able to convince you to like it. So please, don't comment on a band or a song if you don't like it. It's a waste of time. Don't lower and debase yourselves to such third-grade name calling tactics, because it's not going to change anything. You're just making enemies.

Even as I'm writing this, I realize I'm probably not going to make much of a difference either, and I'm probably also going to be the victim of name-calling and such. So whatever, go ahead. Call me a fag or a cock-sucker if that makes you feel like you're going to get a point across. But it's probably not going to be the one you want. People read these posts, and they're probably thinking the same thing i am:

"Holy God! What is the point of this? who is this idiot?"

Because, really, you seem ignorant and immature when you just make a post bashing someone, some band, or some song. I would think that you would much rather be thought of as intelligent, and maybe post something constructive, something that adds to the discussion.

Speaking of which, it's also kind of pointless to make a one-sentence post saying only "These guys rock" or "oh em gee, I luv these guyz," That doesn't make a good post, does it? I think we all assume, since you're here, and not saying that said band sucks, that you have an appreciation for whatever or whoever you're posting on. It's also quite pointless to banter back and forth on correct lyrics. Sure, say which you think are correct, by all means, but please, at least back up your thinking with some evidence.

This brings me to my take on the whole god/gun debate: Have you ever thought it could be a play on words? We've all heard of someone being called a 'loaded gun' and we've also heard of a 'God complex'. So perhaps these two were combined. The subject of the song acts like a loaded gun, agitated, possibly dangerous, over this girl. But he also has quite the ego, hence the God complex. So maybe by saying "Loaded God Complex" he's making the characteristics of these two states of mind into one. Now, I'm not saying that's right, but it seems to make sense to me.

Anyway, I agree with KNEEKNEE and there_is_no_try. We should all be just a bit more mature, and not come to a site called songmeanings if we don't want to discuss song meanings. I'm also fifteen, but that doesn't mean I have to be stupid and superficial. There are some teens out there who can think, read and spell, and care about more than just the opposite sex and their favorite boy band. Some of us actually have a brain, and valid opinions, and just because We're young doesn't mean we have to be ignorant and shallow.

I'm kind of shocked that people who claim to be older, thus more intelligent and mature, use one's sexual preference as an insult. Come on people, are you serious? I thought we, as a society, were finally past juvenile crap like this. "Dude, you're gay. Suck my cock." What?? Okay, so you try to insult people by calling them gay [which shouldn't be able to be taken as an insult anyway] and then you turn right back around and tell them to suck your cock? How does that work?

Look, I'm not saying I'm better than anyone else here, I'm just trying to be constructive and stop a pointless internet feud. So please, at least take my words into consideration before you start to bash me. Hopefully at least one of you made it to the end of this post, and maybe at least thought about what I've just said. Thank you, those of you who behave like considerate, mature human beings. We need more people like you.

Don McLean – American Pie Lyrics 21 years ago
As i was reading this, i noticed a certain interpretation has gone unmentioned. It was almost there in one of the posts, but not exactly.
A favorite interpretation of my dad's and mine is to the verse
"and while the king was looking down the jester stole his thorny crown"
While i beleive that, through out most of the song, the phrase "the jester" is referring to Bob Dylan, in this instance i think it is referencing John Lennon, and his saying that "the Beatles are more popular than Jesus Christ"
i dont know if this is correct, nor am i claiming it is. it's just something i always think of when i hear those lines.
any insight or corrections would be greatly appreciated.
