Queens of the Stone Age – I'm Designer Lyrics 15 years ago
Or maybe he's rather saying that to survive in the current climate you have to be a 'sell out'

Queens of the Stone Age – I'm Designer Lyrics 15 years ago
I think he's hitting out at people who say he's sold out. As though saying to these people who do you know who has to eat that hasn't, we all do it. I mean you can try to sell out as little as you can but you all do it.

Also I love the concept of how do you sell something you don't own in the first place. After all we didn't buy our bodies did we? The concept of selling out is a stupid one. Values aren't stupid but selling out is.

Queens of the Stone Age – I Never Came Lyrics 15 years ago
I am starting to see this as two people in a non monogamous relationship, "Laws of men are just pretend they ain't mine" which one leaves to get married, "You ball and chained together from the dawn to dusk" .

By getting married this person is tampering with something which both partners had sworn that no outside interference/dalliance would intrude on. It's as though the other person is saying if you think that this can be intruded upon then its as though the relationship and all the values behind it were so flimsy that they were never really there. I'm not having sex with you anymore and thought technically I'm leaving I might as well have never been there.

"Ain't gonna spend another night in your bed"
"I never came."

I toyed with it being about an unconsumated and unrequited affair as well though. Meanings are myriad. Beautiful beautiful song and yes I somehow think the author was aware of the double meaning of "came".

Queens of the Stone Age – Better Living Through Chemistry Lyrics 15 years ago
"There's no-one here, and people everywhere, you're on your own..."

I think this line refers to the failiure of doctors to cure problems because of their over prescription of drugs. I think the suggestions there is that you have to sort them out on your own. For all the doctors (people everywhere) there are no cures.

"I'm reclaiming my mind, destroying everyone."

By taking the choice not to take drugs you maintain your mind by going contrary to everyone in society, because everyone is taking them and reccomending them...??

David Sylvian – Red Guitar Lyrics 15 years ago
To me it's about how art is the only thing anchoring him to life, the one true preoccupation, the only thing that makes sense.

"I recognise no method of living that I know, I see only the basic materials I may use...I play my Red guitar..."

music is all he has.
What a beautiful song it is.

Sylvian has said it's about a little girl dreaming about being a nun, so it is about marriage but more specifically her marriage to Christ.

Japan – The Art Of Parties Lyrics 17 years ago
It seems to me to be about social anxiety. About being desperate to be more socially adept.

That sense that you could talk so easily to everyone when you were younger, that you did everything so automatically but that you've lost the ability now that you want it.

Electronic – Reality Lyrics 19 years ago
I hate the coldness of this its just so icy it's just discarding a human being... I am not what you thought I was so please just go away - although it also is sugestive htat te woman involved has done his wrong and this is why he's shut himself off from her...- you keep calling...to give me your explanation?

as far as icy lyrics go Bernard Sumner is the king of them - such cool lines "i keep hearing what i never said you got me in you conversation."

A top song though Electronic rocks

The Smiths – Wonderful Woman Lyrics 19 years ago
gorgeous, I am moved to tears when he sings when she calls me I do not walk I run.... the desperate hopelessness of knowing she's a rotter but feeling spellbound

and is their a better line than ice water for blood with neither heart nor spine...a true Mozzer classic lyric - why wasn't it included anywhere? the instrumental accompanyment is delightfully lush and touching too!!!?

submissions
The Smiths – Butterfly Lyrics 19 years ago
it is called "what do you see in him" so the lyrics are wrong....

which was a different lyric that Morrissey wrote for the song that became known as "Wonderful Woman" with the lyric "whats to be done with her..."

The Smiths – Hand in Glove Lyrics 19 years ago
Another thing I've noticed is perhaps this is about the Marr/Morrissey relationship, I mean the relationship referred to isn't necessarily a sexual one, just a fiercely protective and appreciative one, two characteristics that their relationship had I think

The Smiths – Barbarism Begins at Home Lyrics 19 years ago
very funky indeed I love the fact that even Johnny Marr danced to this one onstage!!

The Smiths – These Things Take Time Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think this is about a woman purely based onthe lyric, I am spellbound but the woman divides and the hills are alive with celibate cries this implies that the girlfriend of someone is interferiing and prevents a relationship of some sort from developing...?

I can't believe you'd ever care because you won't stick with me long enough for such feelings to form because I'm the most inept that ever stepped seems to be the message of this song to me

The Smiths – I Won't Share You Lyrics 19 years ago
Quite possibly, yeah, but I dunno the way it goes it's seems more likely that this is the persons reaction to his declaration that he wont share them...? maybe that was in the note that she read!! I'd like it to be about Johnny but I mean Morrissey had been sharing Johnny for a while previous to that song, Johnny and Angie were together before the Smiths...!?? but I dunno!

The Smiths – Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before Lyrics 19 years ago
It's about a pathological liar to me, someone who can't stop lying and creating excuses and so ends up in trouble and trys to dig himself out by blaming other people for telling lies on him. who says I lied because I never... I love it because Morrissey sounds like a little kid when he's saying that he phrases it like a child would Top notch stuff

Morrissey – Billy Budd Lyrics 19 years ago
the 12 years on has been taken by numerous people to refer to Johnny Marr because allegedly (I don't know this for sure of course) but it had been 12 years since they met when the album this was on was released...?? take from that what you will - I've read numerous people say this song is about Marr is some respect but I dunno??

The Smiths – I Know It's Over Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is Beautiful despair that has kept me comfort many times and made me cry even more. When he sings thesea wants to claim me... knife wants to slit me its just a heatbreaking description of what suicidal thoughts feel like, drawn to death because of the werainess of life...sad beyond words in the language.

The sad veiled bride is not to my mind the ex lover of the protaganist (Morrissey I assume) he is noting that even this bride is sad, and thus those who are getting married are sometimes in fact oftentimes just as neglected and desperately unhappy as he is being alone and rejected all the time.

Love is natural and real but not for you and I my love... he feels kinship with this bride because even though she has someone, she's had to compromise her standards and her true joy in order to not be alone.

I can't see that the bride is anything other that a point at which Morrissey compares his fate to those that are coupled and sees that sometimes for some people love just doesn't exist or work and never will and perhaps it is our own characteristics that make love unattainable.

The Smiths – That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah the line I just might die with a smile on my face after all is the puzzler for me, everything else seems to be concluded in the posts above, obviously it's the reaction from one person to the other mocking their despair.

an idea I like and also think Morrissey quite capable of is that the line reflects some sort of twisted happiness at the knowledge that everyone will experience pain at some point in their life. "time's tide will smother you..."

You can only watch it from afar so long he seems to be saying to this other person and one day it will be happening in your life too and I will smile at the gratification of knowing that you will get your commeuppance for laughing...

The possibility of sex may come in also because now he has thought about the fate of this insensitive person and has concluded that they will regret it and pay for it someday its almost like he has forgiven them for their insensitivity

and so the as smithskid says the line "drove the point home." becomes a double entendre... (I hadn't noticed that before smithskid!!)

Also yet another possibliity is that it may represent some kind of suicidal ambition "times tide will smother you, and I will too..." may mean that he plans to punish this person by literally smothering them and commiting suicide with them in the car...??? and he will die with a smile on his face because he has shown that person that such despair can touch them too...?

All just my views though!!

See this is why Morrissey is such a wonderful song writer, many different meanings could be attrbiuted for this song and many others genius.

The Smiths – Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others Lyrics 19 years ago
Ah Aurora I'm one of those silly people who thinksthat the lyrics are far too silly to go with that beautiful music...

I dunno how beautiful these Morrissey lyrics can be said to be when the only genuinely poetic lines "Send me the pillow..." are nicked from another song!!

I think it simply about (as Morrissey declared it to be) noticing just how differently built women are as a whole - a point that is intelligent and certainly original. however much as I can accept that the words are somewhat intelligent they still make a mockery of Marr's beautiful etheral music which seemed to ask for something more emotional I think

But then I was one of the few who thinks Girlfriend in a Coma was also a absolute stinker, lyric wise so my opinion is prob not popular!!!

Morrissey – Seasick, Yet Still Docked Lyrics 19 years ago
I relate wholly and appallingly to the melancholy of this track, another one that I can't listen to on the bus because I'll cry in public!!!

It's just about the sadness of realising that you weren't equipped to seek the joys that you wanted and sought from life. you want all these things yet you suffer the torment of knowing that you were in a way defeated before you began and the optimism and hope for life has slipped away.

the pathetic attempt to retain some dignity "you must be such a fool to pass me by." int he face of such a public admittance of the disappointment of life (done whilst drunk?- i've had more than I hold) is enough to break my heart if I let it. ah and the beauty of the music, underrated because I'm not sure if those who have someone to love can relate to this without thinking it whining and self pitying...?

Perhaps you just haven't earned it! they are likely to say!!

The Smiths – What Difference Does It Make? Lyrics 19 years ago
... but then there is the now you know the truth about me you won't see me anymore. it could just mean know you realise I love you and it's not returned you're avoiding me. not explicitly homosexual but leaning more toward that interpretation there I think... women wouldn't react like that...sounds more like a tough kid thing to do...

The Smiths – What Difference Does It Make? Lyrics 19 years ago
I just thought the thrust of it was what difference does my devotion make to our relationship??? what difference does it make to our future that I'd die for you it makes none because you are the one in control and I can do nothing to make you treat me with respect or to love me back. its the futility of one sided attraction to me. As to whether the target of this is male or female necessarily I don't think there is conclusive evidence. Maybe his secret is the fact that he knew this all along and he is opening up for the first time....? or maybe is it homosexual...?

The Smiths – This Night Has Opened My Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
So underrated includes one of my favourite Smiths moments - "a shoeless child on a swing reminds you of your own again..." alarmingly evocative of the circumstance of the girl. I got the impression kind of that the man who said he's cure her ills was a doctor and it was connected with an abortion...
Wonderful song, wonderful bit of cribbing for the Moz man.

The Smiths – The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Lyrics 19 years ago
it is interesting as the only point at which I think that an accusation of paedophilia about Morrissey lyrics miught be fair enough - it doesn't seem like he's related to the child, I once had a child and he saved my life and I never even asked him him name... if he is related why do you have to ask his name???

In the lyric sheet the words are I never even gave him a name implying he has the right to do it... implying relationship... the meaning kind of hinged on that line for me. although my conclusions are not decided upon.

Good song though

The Smiths – Reel Around the Fountain Lyrics 19 years ago
well "take me to the haven of your bed..." is like saying that even though the person who is being sung too doesn't want Morrissey at the moment, the singer still thinks the person is great and wants that person. and even though the person doesn't want Morrissey he still thinks himself pretty great and still thinks he and this other person would make a great match for one another. its like he is saying noone else is your match apart from me, noone else would forgive you for not being romantic and still want you all the same...?? hope I made sense!

I don't understand agin the child abuse connotation, because before sex you ARE childlke and innocent and naive in the ways of things. not just children are innocent - I didn't misunderstand or remain puzzled about what Morrissey meant for a second - those that did have sick minds.

The Smiths – This Charming Man Lyrics 19 years ago
a jumped up pantry boy I always thought referred to the charming man, that as the boy sits in the car he is caught between evaluating this mans position and the validity of his experience to give him advice and being so caught up in the magic of the situation that he accepts the charming man does indeed know so much about these things... its like logical critical capabilities being submerged by this mans charms. but I dunno

Its called doing a Morrissey in my house when someone steals something because he was great at doing that - he did it with class

The Smiths – You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with the sentiments because I am just as self pitying as Morrissey, it basically attacks those people who blame you for your own misery, who believe that you bring problems on yourself by not being happy or by giving up - which is very very true but nonetheless it hurts when people are like that. so in that sense a wonderful portrait of me too

submissions
The Smiths – Hand in Glove Lyrics 19 years ago
Its someone trying to convince someone else that the relationship they have is nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to desert. it isn't necessarily homosexual I would say it is a great love song regardless of sexuality.it just refers to outsiders whose relationship is frowned upon (which occurs for many reasons). however in the end they lack the faith in the other to trust it will last

Morrissey – He Knows I'd Love To See Him Lyrics 19 years ago
Does anyone think this might be about Johnny Marr? I read somewhere that it was... but then I also read from more resputable source that in fact the he of the title was Morrisseys dad. I guess it could be about both, but that's probably wishful thinking on my part.

The Smiths – Girl Afraid Lyrics 19 years ago
its just an observation of the confusion that comes from relating to the opposite sex, I love the way that he doesn't pass judgement he doesn't say oh if only she knew that... or he knew... instead he just plainly states that sometimes it just doesn't work - ah I know the situtaion so well. good bit of music too, unerrated.

The Smiths – Asleep Lyrics 19 years ago
of course it's a manual for suicidalism, it is also the most stunningly beautiful and dignifies testament to despair and hoplessness that could ever and has ever been fashioned. the simple solemn piano played by the beautiful Johnny Marr and those spare plain lines put down in Morrisseys unique and touching voice. I see that in some respects as the poster above said it is happy but it's also desperately depserate and sad, he says don't feel bad for me in the desperate tones of someone who wants bitterly for someone to care. he needs someone anyone which is the heart of his dilemma and pain. especially mving and the reason why I can't listen to it in public for fear of crying on the bus is the auld lang syne at the end. Heatbreaking stuff!!

The Smiths – William, It Was Really Nothing Lyrics 19 years ago
its been suggested that it was about Billy McKenzie but only on the basis of that companion song - it is more than likely that Alan Rankine was just inspired by the William in the title and the possibility of the connection with Billy McKenzie, because I think it's more likely that it's about Billy Liar - a oft referred to 60's film that Morrissey loved. Morrissey does seem intent to pursue the idea that women are grotesque creature only interested in a man's money - which we aren't you know - no matter what high street experience has shown you. exquisitely beautiful song in all respects

The Smiths – Well I Wonder Lyrics 19 years ago
Indescribably sad this one, this seems to be the fierce last stand of his attempt to force his will and his love on another person. I kinda get the sense too that his is a love that is not responded to or welcomed. the possibility that he might be remembered at least is the only thing keeping him slightly alive. so sad tears well up in my heart every time.

Morrissey – Yes, I Am Blind Lyrics 19 years ago
I haven't heard that, but that is intriguing, this is a very personal song for me, I kinda thought it was just about being a pessimist and the pain that you bring on yourself, but then they value of that pessimism is reasserted by the end. Moz is a lyrical genius!!
