Erin has also said that this song was about three prominent events in her life. First was tour bus as rickterp explained. Second was the death of close relative. Third was the legal battle surrounding Terri Schiavo and the removal of her feeding tube.

"he's going to put his two cents in
'cause he's got a gun
but i'm gonna put in three
'cause history owes me one"

I love this stanza. So empowering.

Res – Tsunami Lyrics 21 years ago
Paragraph by Paragraph. :)

"I feel so nice just when you're here
The reason why is not so clear
And I knew the first time when you told me
I'd fall in love just as you hold me"

She is very in love with someone. Just as he said, she fell in love, and now she feels wonderful around him.

"And I want to stay at your side tonight,
I want to watch you as the sun lights up your eyes
I want to know when you wake first thing you see is me
'Cuz you're all the things that I pray I need"

All she wants to do is spend time with him, he's everything she needs, etc. More emphasis on being in love.

"Ride, ride this wave of mine
There's brighter things out on the other side
Ride, ride this wave of mine
I know that things are gonna be alright"

Something happened to shake up the relationship, most likely on her part. She's telling him to just ride the wave, in essence, "go with the flow." While things might look dark from where they are now, everything will work out in the end.

"Moments they come and then they go
You feel so high, and then before you know
I could have sworn our future was set in stone
But, I guess some things are just as well forgotten now"

Love is so sweet, yet sometimes so temporary. The high she was on came crashing down. She thought that she would always be with this guy, but now she wonders if she should just forget it.

"So know I concentrate on turning wrong to right
I gonna let loose things I held inside to die
I'm gonna live and let forgive may satisfy
So clear out the smoke and usher in the light"

Instead she decides to just tell the truth and try to right all her wrongs. Things she's been lying about for a while she'll reveal. By living and forgiving, she'll be able to get rid of all the shadows and skeletons and start living a true life again. By this, she hopes she can save the relationship.

"Ride, ride this wave of mine
There's brighter things out on the other side
Ride, ride this wave of mine
I know that things are gonna be alright"

Once again, telling the guy to go with the flow and just let her come clean with him and help right her wrongs. By doing so, she'll help right the relationship as well.

I guess you could make a huge generalization and have it being not about a guy, but about drugs and coming clean, but I think that's looking way too far into it.

Jen Chapin – Hurry Up Sky Lyrics 21 years ago
This is a 9/11 tribute song. "Once we had laughed about a discount store and a diamond ring" is a tribute to her friend who died in the towers. She sings of New York being united through this horrible day and how it could have good ("maybe we're better now - stronger, with a deeper soul / and we'll be whole again in a different way / and this time will teach for a new day"). But she mainly focuses on how so many of us wanted time to just hurry up, to bring us past this time of hurt.

Beautiful.

Dido – See You When You're 40 Lyrics 21 years ago
A more literal interpretation of this song could go as such: She thinks she's in love with this guy who is "all talk and no walk." She makes it clear that while he wants to seem mysterious and deep, this is all just a show; in reality, this guy doesn't know anything about emotion. She knows this, but can't help but still want him, even though whenever she spends time with him she knows he is completely false.

She decides to leave - "I'm gonna leave, tonight, before I change my mind," reassuring herself that this guy isn't going anywhere with his life and he's a complete downer. ("You think misery will make you stand apart from the crowd") By separating herself from this guy, she'll rise above him and stand out, not wasting her time anymore - "now I've seen, tonight, how I could waste my time / and I'll be on my way, and I won't be back."

Ani DiFranco – Studying Stones Lyrics 21 years ago
It seems like Ani is saying she has spent a lot of time pretending to be emotionally numb, showing that things don't bother her, etc. "Course numb is an old hat / old as my oldest memories" implies that this isn't a new thing, but more a thing she's been doing since she was young, a learned behavior. She hoped she wouldn't have to keep her emotions inside all the time when she got older and out on her own, but "any more pent up emotion / i think im gonna explode" - it hasn't happened. She continues to detach herself from her emotions and the world around her, but wishes it wasn't so.
