This is a difficult concept to get to grips with, but he's basically saying where you are or where you're from is purely a matter of chance. Therefore, there's no such thing as 'home', and all wars over territory are ridiculous. Also, how can it be illegal to just be in a certain place? The idea of borders and countries and immigration is all bullshit. |

The irony is that this song is about people trying to work out the meanings in their lyrics. He's saying they write the songs for themselves, not for the public, he doesn't care if you know what they're talking about or not basically. There was an interview when Ian MacKaye said he never explains his lyrics, because they're always printed in the cd booklets, surely thats enough...fair point i suppose! |

I think 'bon soir regret a demain' means 'goodnight, sorry good morning' or something...
I read an interview with Guy where he said that the lyrics are basically two different ideas. The first verse is a love song, the second is a rant about Lockheed Martin's monopoly on arms manufacturing....there is no strict cnnection between the two and should be read separately as far as I can make out.
Great song though, in fact I'd say its probably (just) my favourite fugazi song, love the way it builds up! |

Its basically saying Hollywood is shit and needs more directors like John Cassavetes who basically didn't allow himself to be constricted by the industry. Gena Rowlands who is mentioned in the last line played the lead in Cassavetes' greatest work 'Opening Night'. |

I've heard that this song is about having children when there's no love in a relationship but plenty of money. So, the birthday pony is basically a way of buying your family's love without any sincerity. The line 'I needed something to do, and so I split into two' is about having kids just because it seems like the thing to do. |
