Icehouse – Electric Blue Lyrics 12 years ago
The guy is in love with a woman, but doesn't know if she even sees him, as a love interest, or maybe at all. When she does see him, he "freezes", doesn't know what the hell to do. She may exist behind "her eyes", but he can't get past her beauty to actually talk to her and break the ice.

The Farm – All Together Now Lyrics 17 years ago
The lyrics are inspired by the Christmas day truce in World War 1 between English/German troops along the Western Front. German troops began decorating trees and singing carols, in which English troops responded in kind. They eventually crossed "No Man's Land", where troops from both sides eschanged small gifts with one another (cigars, whiskey). That's where the lyric "All Together Now, in No Man's Land" is taken from. Needless to say, generals from both sides made sure that this didn't happen again, ordering military action against each other on subsequent Christmases until the end of the war.

And then in the second verse, they've realized that no one has learned from this unprecedented act of humanity, war and strife still reign supreme in the world. But, there is still hope that people will learn to get along.

Listen to this song.
Really inspiring...

Four Tops – Bernadette Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is my favorite of the "Motown" sound! It truly is monumentally fun and insanely powerful.

Stubbs is passionate and I like the comparison that blackbryson makes between him and the "ohter men" in the song that he is denouncing. Heck, Stubbs sings that he needs Bernadette to live!

Though, I think that he truly is in love with Bernadette and that she reciprocates that love with him. He is just on such a high and needs to vent his frustrations from the fact that not only is this Bernadette beautiful to look at, she is also beautiful in other ways to behold. It sounds like that she is the perfect woman!

Aside from the meaning of this song, the singing arrangement is superb. The backup sound gives the song another level that is without equal. It drives the listener to epic heights with such a melancholly flavor. At the end of each verse, the backup singers seem to underlie what Stubbs is feeling when they go into their crazy wail.

Example: When he sings "...never find the love I've found in you." the backup singers go crazy with a high-pitched wail which would signify the climax to the sentiment that he is feeling. It happens again when he sings "...I need you to live."

Man, what a great song.

And your point?

The line "here kitty kitty" and the line "the kitty she discovered" are totally different don't you think?

Yes, I have read "The Dirt". It's a fantastic read. The Ozzy and Nikki "Ant story" was one of my favorites.

Men at Work – Overkill Lyrics 19 years ago
How about this song being about schizophrenia (sp?)?

"Day after Day, it reappears
Night after Night, my heart beat shows the fear
Ghosts appear and fade away..."

Schizos have problems with things "reappearing" to them time after time, mainly voices which would cause one to lose sleep. Some of these voices (ghosts in the song) can cause many of a schizo to worry about things that normally wouldn't trouble others. For example the voice in one's head telling one that someone will die or some thing will happen if they don't blink 33 times in a row.

Or this could just be about depression? The ghosts being that feeling of helplessness under the weight of that terrible condition. This person doesn't want the depression to get worse, but the paradox being that thinking about wanting to avoid getting worse, just makes everything worse anyway.

The sax solo in this song is quite haunting and beautiful...

Van Halen – Jump! Lyrics 19 years ago
At least realize that my original intention when commenting on this song was to state that this song WAS INDEED inspired by a situation involving a suicide.

And, my own fault being that I stated that the "person" in this song "jumps to his death", what I should have said, was this person is contemplating jumping, maybe thinking that's the best solution.

David Lee Roth: "Jump" is a song that we wrote for several different reasons, primarily because it is leap year and secondly, because I was watching television one night and it was the five o'clock news and there was a fellow standing on top of the Arco Towers in Los Angeles and he was about to check out early, he was going to do the 33 stories drop - and there was a whole crowd of people in the parking lot downstairs yelling "Don't jump, don't jump" and I thought to myself, "Jump." So, I wrote it down and ultimately it made in onto the record, although in a much more positive vein. It's easy to translate it the way you hear it on the record as a "go for it" attitude, positive sort of affair - I jog, therefore, I am, approach.

Chinup- the above statement was typed by yourself. When David says that the song "ultimately made it onto the record, although(keyword in this statement) in a much more positive vein. It's easy to translate it the way you hear it on the record as a "go for it" attitude, positive sort of affair - I jog, therefore, I am, approach." he's explaining that most people have attached a certain label and attitude towards this song. When he talks about the "jogging", he is stating that people have taken this song at face value BECAUSE of the music. It's not neccesarily a "happy" song.

Just like "Every Breath You Take" by the Police is certainly a romantic sounding song, the original intent of the writer, Sting, was of a more dark, brooding, sinister flavor than what people have ultimately attached meaning towards it.

I think there is a happy medium here. David also contends that it was leap year when they wrote the song, so, really your contention that it is a play on words has merit, though the way the song SOUNDS isn't necessarily what the song is about.

This sure has been fun, I appreciate it. Now let's discuss Oh Sherrie by Steve Perry and try and find any hidden, subversive meanings within that. I might be able to find some...

Van Halen – Jump! Lyrics 19 years ago
"You've got it tough, I've seen the toughest around"

Explanation: You think as a person that you've had a tough time wtih your life, take a walk in my shoes and see how you like it. Everything isn't as bad as it seems, it could be much worse.

"You've got to roll with the punches to get to what's real"

Explanation: Life is always giving you tough choices and siutations. If you can handle them, then you are much better off.

It seems that the interview that you have posted supports my opinion. Dave is talking about how the song became so popular because of the fact that when people think of Jumping, they tend to think of "jumping for joy" not jumping to one's death. That is what he thinks the listener of the song is attributing the lyrics to, a happy, rather than "dark and insidious" emotion.

"So, I wrote it down and ultimately it made in onto the record, although in a much more positive vein. It's easy to translate it the way you hear it on the record as a "go for it" attitude, positive sort of affair - I jog, therefore, I am, approach. "

It is correct that he says it made it on the record in a much more positive vein, but in the context of the interview, he is explaining that that's not really what the song is about. He then talks about how simple it is to translate the song the way you hear from the record instead of really contemplating the lyrics meaning (I jog, therefore, I am, approach). Which is what you have done and most other listeners of the song have done. Thinking one specific thing and not really looking any deeper into what the song means. The music to the song is "kick ass" and makes you want to dance and have a good time, which ultimately contributes to the general consensus that this SHOULD be a happy song.

Oh, and I never said it was a "pro-suicide song". I explained that the song is written about an attempted suicide.

Chinup, you seem to sound quite intelligent. At least understand that the reason this website exists is that song lyrics are quite subjective in nature. Some don't make any sense when explained, but it's fun to try and reason what they might be about.

Tracy Chapman – Fast Car Lyrics 19 years ago
A mother living below the poverty line because of the environment that she was forced to live in, wants to go anywhere else, which she thinks would be better than where she's at. Problem is, people who live below the poverty line are a part of the vicious circle. Low paying, menial jobs foster apathy, alcoholism, crime in most who are a part of her world that she comes to find out about. She thinks that love is the answer to her problems, seeing that there is that chance at a different life.

Eventually, her partner is a part of the "vicious circle", has no real ambition or cannot get the breaks and turns to other diversions that commonly cause strife within a domestic situation.

The song leaves with a hint of despair. The "Fast Car" that was supposed to come to bring her to a better place is now a symbol of escape for the "love" she thought she had to leave her in her place to get on with her life... Unfortunately, this last message seems to portend to the poor's plight in general.

A dark, disturbing, yet beautiful and bluesy song. Hearkens back to the old days of the "blues man"(apologies to Tracy) sitting and playing the guitar and rapping about the troubles in life.

What is suicidal about these lyrics?

Nothing and everything all at once...

Chinup...
At first look, yes the lyrics seem pretty harmless and because of it's reputation, the song has become devoid of any real meaning. I thought it silly when I heard this explanation, but when you see that "you got it tough, I've seen the toughest around" and "you've got to roll with the punches to get to what's real" there is certainly more to just jumping in the air...

Most songwriters really don't come out right away and say what their song is about, that's why websites like this one exist.

Suzanne Vega – Luka Lyrics 19 years ago
The best and most catchy song about child abuse of all time. I really enjoy this song, but I don't enjoy what it's about.

I do believe that this song is about a little boy being abused, not a battered wife. The line "They only hit until you cry" means that more than one person is abusing the narrator. Of course she could be making a generalization about men or abusive people in general, but within the context of the song, I think that it sounds like it's a child talking about their situation.

The Police – King Of Pain Lyrics 19 years ago
Somehow, this song seems to be about Satan wrestling with his "personality". I think by him talking about "I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign" Satan wishes his id wasn't so out of control, or that he had a stronger ego and superego to supplement the fact that he is evil incarnate.

Of course, this is indeed a paradox because if Satan is indeed a sociopath, then he wouldn't have any sort of a ego/superego to temper his thoughts about wanting to stop doing evil his entire existence. But, maybe, by some miracle, he finally develops a conscience and starts to look at his "role" differently.

The other reason why I think it's Satan talking is that of all the bad things that are being described in this song, there is a refrain stating "it's my soul up there", meaning that he was involved in every bad event that happened.

Plus, it's his destiny to be the king of pain...

The Police – Every Breath You Take Lyrics 19 years ago
I actually have heard Sting say that this song is about him imagining his ex-wife stalking him. I do believe that I heard it on one of the many VH1 shows.

Either way, I think the song is much more interesting when you think it's about stalking someone, because when I was growing up, so many thought it was such a great LOVE song. So, by at least having a different take on it, it makes me want to listen to the song over again and make new opinions about it, just as the "big brother" idea puts a new spin on this song.

If VH1 ever has a "most awesomely bad song list from movies", this song would have to be on it, probably in the top 10.

The only reason I would say that I like this song is because it's in "Lost in Translation". It makes that dancing stripper scene way too funny...

Guns N' Roses – Don't Cry Lyrics 19 years ago
My interpretation of this song was that Axl wrote it about the fact that he got a woman "knocked up" and this was his way of consoling her.

The lines "I know how you feel inside, I've been there before. Something is changing inside you and don't you know?" is describing the person talking about the fact that they have knocked the girl up and this is not necessarily the first time its happened.

Later on in the song, this person is talking about "give me a kiss before you tell me good bye". This is so because the guy is dumping the girl and her problems (telling her that she can "make it her own way, but you'll be all right now sugar"), but making known that he still cares for her and her situation and trying to console her.

All in all, a groupie who accidentally got knocked up and wanted some sort of recognition from the "protagonist" in the song, slightly getting it, but still having to face the cold hard reality of a spurned love and a mouth to feed on the way.

Just my interpretation...

BTW, I am a big GNR fan, so this is not to cheapen this song for anyone else or render it meaningless.

Van Halen – Jump! Lyrics 19 years ago
I have read that the band has said this song is about someone who was about to jump to his death from a hotel that the band was staying at during one of their earlier tours.

Diamond Dave was watching the guy and made some off-hand remark about how when he sees someone hanging on to the side of a building, ready to jump, they always end up "jumping".

I think the lyrics can back this story up. This person in the song is basically a social misfit looking for some acceptance, generally from a woman who he wants to take home and have sex with. But the situation towards the end of the song has this "character" losing his confidence and deciding that he can't take it anymore and decides to jump to his death.

Sorry for the masculine references, I suppose that the character in the song could be a woman as well.

Yes, I have also heard that the band has stated that this song is indeed about Marilyn Monroe and the subsequent whetting of appetites that she imposed on Joe Elliot and'or the rest of the band.

Nena – 99 Luftballons Lyrics 19 years ago
Yes, to a certain extent it is anti-war. But, specifically I think you could make an argument that it is anit-cold war. The fact that this person and her friend release 99 red balloons into the sky and a programming malfunction (bugs in the software) perceives it as a threat is a reference to the neurotic attitudes of the "superpowers" during the cold war.

All throughout the song there is a crisis happening all the while these 99 red balloons innocently float above everyone.

The end of the song is the result of a nuclear holocaust caused by the reactionary decisions of the leaders in the world. Supremely melancholy, bittersweet and on the right track, no matter whether some of the lyrics are a bit blown out of proportion.

Mötley Crüe – Same Ole Situation Lyrics 19 years ago
Motley's ode to lesbianism. Slightly ironic and funny because of the fact that the person within the song is talking about an ex-girlfriend who "discovered the kitty" and decides that's "just the way it goes" and avoids emascualtion by adopting this attitude. Also, it's addressing the fact that there are more women "experimenting" and that those decisions are begrudgingly becoming accepted.

After reading all the comments to this point about this song (all urban legends and stories about it being heard before), I am going to have to agree with the very first post about this song from LetsGoMets.

There seems to be a rather large grain of salt that the listener needs to take while interpreting the lyrics to the song. But, if people want to take the lyrics to this song and think it something more than what it was originally intended to be, than I have no qualms with that. That is well within a listener's right.

Roxy Music – More Than This Lyrics 19 years ago
This just happens to be my favortie song of all time. I must say that I am a bit surprised that there are only a couple of comments about this song here.

This song seems to be popular to remake (because it's so very good) as 10,000 Maniacs (sans Natalie
Merchant) and Norah Jones have each had their cracks at it (both commendable efforts).

The particular alluring aspect of the song is the music. While the lyrics do speak the philosophy of being able to live for the moment and appreciating what you have, the music gives the song an ethereal presence. Never have I heard a song that could pass itself along as a beautiful love ballad but, at the same time, be such a sly, sublime rock song worthy of contemplation and introspection on the part of the listener.

Simply my favorite song, because "there's nothing More Than This"...

The Boomtown Rats – I Don't Like Mondays Lyrics 19 years ago
Knowing what the lyrics mean in regards to this song make me appreciate it more, but the same could be said about most of the songs that I like or know.

But, the fact that this incident really happened makes this song much more "surreal" and dark than I originally thought when I first listened to it. I thought the song was just some "new wave" gibberish meant to validate this group's songwriting skills and to help them shed their punk past. It's certainly much more than that and really has imprinted itself as one of the more impressive songs to come out of the 80's.

In regards to the girl, Brenda Spencer has been up for parole many times and has been denied it each time. I think she was to be up for another hearing either this year or the next couple of years once again.
