All Together Now

The lyrics are inspired by the Christmas day truce in World War 1 between English/German troops along the Western Front. German troops began decorating trees and singing carols, in which English troops responded in kind. They eventually crossed "No Man's Land", where troops from both sides eschanged small gifts with one another (cigars, whiskey). That's where the lyric "All Together Now, in No Man's Land" is taken from. Needless to say, generals from both sides made sure that this didn't happen again, ordering military action against each other on subsequent Christmases until the end of the war.

And then in the second verse, they've realized that no one has learned from this unprecedented act of humanity, war and strife still reign supreme in the world. But, there is still hope that people will learn to get along.

I think a big part of the meaning of this song is in the first verse. "Remember boy that your forefather's died Lost in millions for a country's pride But they never mention the trenches of Belgium When they stopped fighting and they were one" It sounds almost like a school lesson, the boys are being taught about the 'glory' of war and what their forefathers died for, but no-one ever tells them of the futility of the conflict, as in how alike the men are. Next year I'm becoming an officer in the army and it wans't until I heard this song that I really thought about the pointlessness and waste of war, I always considered it somewhat of an adventure.

When I listened to the words of this song, it made me cry.

this song is a football anthem and was written for england's team in either world cup or euro a few years back.

its about when the english and the germans united on christmas day for a game of football and festivities

so it kinda works at installing the patriotism and brotherhood with the world war one thing.

but its double meaning also saying how football can unite people especially the team, when playing away in front of the whole world.
