About unreciprocated love. Best song on the album... bangin. Techno jam at the end is sweet. |

'Raccoon eyes' is a term used to describe the appearance of people who have their skull fractured. I think the vodka bottle line is clearly a reference to violence, just like the line immediately following it.
A stunningly beautiful and sad song, my favorite from the Fields. |

OK, one thing everyone who listens to NMH should realize by now is that Jeff Magnum does not write songs about completely literal or political subjects. There is no way that the mountains in the song refers to the Caucauses in WWII just because there is Anne Frank imagery throughout the album. There is no way that this is about the fall of communism and the political ramifications of that. And there is certainly no way that it's about the Colombian drug war. I'm sorry, but just think about who's writing these songs for a minute - Jeff Magnum.
Alright, with that said, I think it's a song about peaceful sexuality, quite likely masturbation "(she moves herself about her fist). I see nothing in the lyrics which would suggest it being about something violent like rape. For me, it is an utterly peaceful, soothing, and beautiful song. |

Awesome, RainSong, I'l glad I'm not the only one who saw the birth imagery in this song. I think the song is about a birth and the experiences of a young child, what with "learning to speak", and "hearing the sideboards creek" always makes me think of a toddler running around or something. Jeff Magnum is amazing... |

I think people are interpreting the song WAY too literally. The parts regarding sleep are clearly metaphorical, but I have a different take on it than the other interpretations I've seen here. Look back at what the title of the song we're discussing is, Rebellion. I think this is exactly what the song is about, teenage or youthful rebellion and possibly naiveness as someone else mentioned, this being a theme that runs throughout the entire album. It's about discovering yourself as a young adult and shrugging off everything that was told to you as a child, living life out there on the edge (without sleep, a metaphor I think), but LIVING, and with that the good and the bad, because the good and the bad together is what makes up the human experience. |

| The Smiths – Stretch Out and Wait Lyrics

It actually IS a song about abstinence, not the opposite (at least that\'s what I\'ve always gotten from it). It\'s just talking about instead of getting into a physical relationship, \"stretch out and wait\" and simply enjoy each other\'s company and conversation. The \"wait\" part should be self-explanatory. |

Uhm... no. All of those are wrong. It's been stated many times by Lou Reed and others that the song is about the people who would live in Andy Warhol's 'factory', and would basically live a lifestyle of partying constantly, and how it would take a huge toll on them. |

I believe this song might be about Patti's first child who she gave up for adoption, but I'm not entirely sure. Any thoughts? |
