The Shins – Simple Song Lyrics 11 years ago
Simple song as the name implies. It's a song he wrote about his wife and perhaps to some extent his former bandmates. He is talking about love and how it has the power to make you feel so good and above everything. He wanted to let her know what she did for him. He talks about how that powerful feeling eventually gets lost in the day-to-day but he will never forget that feeling.

The Shins – No Way Down Lyrics 11 years ago
I interpret this is as a commentary on the current world we live in. What's all of it all been for? Just so that a few could live well at the expense of the earth, at the expense of most people?

Razorlight – Hostage of Love Lyrics 15 years ago
I want to add that I don't think the whole song is him speaking as love personified. So it makes it a bit confusing.

Razorlight – Hostage of Love Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm not totally sure but I think its about how when you fall in love you lose yourself in it and you become a "hostage," to it. In this case the narrator is speaking as if he were love itself. So it helps to understand it more if you follow the verses as if love was personified and singing the song.

Sam Sparro – Black and Gold Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about God and choosing to believe in God because otherwise life feels a bit well meaningless.

In the song Black refers to us since we are of the earth. Gold refers to God. I want to be next to you, Black and Gold.

MGMT – Kids Lyrics 15 years ago
They are known for saying stupid sarcastic things in interviews. You shouldn't take what they say in interviews too seriously. They have a pretty out there sense of humor.

MGMT – Kids Lyrics 15 years ago
My interpretation is that they are talking about how when your born your pretty self centered but it's very innocent and based on learning and growng and there are no consequences, but when your older its the inverse you have to sacrifice and be considerate of others and life itself in order to continue growing. Hence, "Control yourself take only what you need from it." Maybe they are making some sort of comment on our generation, or society, that we are too self-centered and not balanced. They are showing the contrast.

Big Country – In A Big Country Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about how when your young you have big dreams, hopes, and ambitions. Everything looks so vast and hopeful. When the song says, "stay alive," they mean stay young, stay hungry.

Great song!

Editors – Blood Lyrics 15 years ago
I think its about someone not being who you originally thought they were, and coming to the sad conclusion that the person is just not a good person. In the song the narrator is saying I don't want associate with you, your rotten. The only thing we have in common is the blood that runs through our veins.

This song always reminds me of an ex-girlfriend. She was a mess, and turned out to be not the person I thought she was.

Black Kids – I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You Lyrics 15 years ago
JOJ I agree with the quality. I noticed that too. It wouldn't surprise since a lot of Indie bands have terrible production and sound quality on their albums for whatever reason. But I don't have the actual CD so maybe there are just a lot of bad versions floating around.

Black Kids – I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is cute. It's about unrequited love. Apparently a friend the narrator has been in love with his/her whole life. It's about the narrator seeing the person with their boyfriend and getting jealous. Not sure if there is a lesbian thing going on, or whoever wrote the song just wanting to distract, or make the lyric a little more interesting, but still that's not the main point, so people shouldn't get too caught up in it.

Vampire Weekend – Oxford Comma Lyrics 16 years ago
To me it reminds me of one of those discussions/arguments where the girlfriend brings up something or says something really condescending that has nothing to do with the heart of the matter. I think that's what the guy is saying in the song. I'm trying to talk about what's really wrong here, and your bring up freaking comma's and proper grammar.

BTW great song. Classic. Definitely one of the better songs to come out this decade.

Every time I hear this song, I wanna throw my ipod across the room. lol. Frustrating, because I feel they ruined what could have been a great song, with all that distortion.

The Killers – Bling (Confession of a King) Lyrics 16 years ago
I was so disappointed when I saw them live and they didn't perform this one.

Really good song.

I think its about the last glimmer of hope when your at the very bottom.

Editors – The Racing Rats Lyrics 16 years ago
This song reminds me of the film Donnie Darko for some reason. In particular the part about if a plane were to fall from the sky. As for the interpretation, it seems to be another song about impending death. Or the feeling of being aware that everything comes to an end eventually. Both seem to be a reoccurring theme throughout this album.

submissions
Editors – When Anger Shows Lyrics 16 years ago
This is one of the better songs on An end has a start if not the best. I think it's about someone about to die, death seems to be the overall theme of this album. The person is trying to die thinking positively and not die with all these bitter feelings. Just my interpretation.

Randy Newman – Short People Lyrics 16 years ago
randir, I don't know if you were trying to be sarcastic. But it is ironic that in your post you are being short-minded.

Supposedly Newman has said himself that the song can be interpreted as being about short-minded people. Negative people basically.

According to this link, it's about the lead singer, and the guilt he felt, when his ex-girlfriend had an abortion.

Contrary to popular belief, not every single Smiths song contains homoerotic elements in it. This one doesn't. If you look around online, you'll find it's actually about the music industry.

So what's the song about. He misses his ex? But then what does that have to do with hating Paparazzis.

Hot beat though.

Amy Winehouse – You Sent Me Flying Lyrics 16 years ago
I just got into Frank recently. Pretty cool album.

Don't really know what to make of this song, meaning wise yet. There is definitely an age difference involved. Don't really know if she's younger or older. I'd guess she's the younger one.

I think looking at the lyrics that she told the guy that she liked him. But the guy said that while he found her attractive, he just liked her in a friendly way and he might have brought up the age difference too.

Radiohead – All I Need Lyrics 16 years ago
I forgot to add, that the stalker/creepy thing has crossed my mind as a possible interpretation of the song as well. But something tells me the band actually wasn't aiming for the creepier interpretation this time around. Just a hunch.

Radiohead – All I Need Lyrics 16 years ago
Wow I love this song. Who knew Thom Yorke could be so romantic. This song is about unrequited love isn't it? That's my guess. He's deeply in love for somebody who he feels takes him for granted or ignores him. I love the part about being in the middle of your picture, lying in the reeds. What a great metaphor.

I just wanted to comment on how awesome the intro to this song is. I love it. It's beautiful but at the same time it gets me pumped. Funny because the song itself is a little depressing.

Chris Isaak – Wicked Game Lyrics 16 years ago
Wow, I had not heard this song in a while, and it still stands up incredibly well. I had it in my head the last few days so I downloaded and it's still a great song. Easily one of the best of the 90's.

As for the meaning it's pretty easy, it's basically about unrequited love.

Duncan Sheik – On A High Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about having serious problems in your life, but having a temporary high. People seem to think you are doing fine, but in reality when it comes crashing down, your in a mess.

The Cloud Room – Hey Now Now Lyrics 17 years ago
Pretty simple meaning. It's just about getting by and getting through difficulties in life. You just hang on and hope for something better.

Anyway, this is a great song. An instant classic, and one that should be remembered as one of the best of this decade.

Arctic Monkeys – If You Were There, Beware Lyrics 17 years ago
Great lyrics in this song. Shows some serious growth by this band. This song has grown on me. Went from being one of my least favorites on the album to one of my favorites. Don't really know what's about though. Seems pretty personal.

Arctic Monkeys – 505 Lyrics 17 years ago
pretty easy song to understand. It's about wanting to be with someone, missing them, etc.

I think this song shows a lot of musical growth. There was nothing really like this in the Am's first album. Nothing that personal, or emotional.

I like Alex's voice, but for some reason when I hear this I can't help but think how good it would sound if it were sung by a better singer.

A Perfect Circle – 3 Libras Lyrics 17 years ago
Great song, never got tired of it. Still listen to it all the time. Anyway, I think the song is pretty self explanatory. Its basically about exposing yourself to someone and being vulnerable but the other person does not reciprocate or do the same. Unrequited love basically. What makes this especially moving is that the narrator describes how he is still able to see through the person and see how they really are inside, but the other person just does not open up.

Arctic Monkeys – Fluorescent Adolescent Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm pretty sure this is about a woman growing older and less physically attractive, and realizing she has to sort of settle for whatever she gets, instead of having her pick. It's sort of funny they would write a song like this.

Is the name of this song supposed to be split or spilt needles. I thought at first that it was split, until I looked closer at the album and it down as spilt needles. I'm figuring the way it is spelled on the album is the intended way. Still, just a funny detail I figured I'd point out.

The Beach Boys – Forever Lyrics 17 years ago
Urgh! I hate that people only remember the John Stamos version now. Dennis is so underrated. Everybody has this image of him as this free spirit/surfer guy who was only in the Beach Boys out of pity. He actually had a great soulful voice and wrote some great songs. Check out the following links on youtube and myspace. His music is beautiful.

Does any one else think this and black wave are related maybe continuations. They sound very alike to me. Those two songs along with Split needles have a very 90's sound to them, at least to my ears. Does anyone else get this? Not at all like typical Shins but I still like.
