i really don't see this song as sad at all. i think it's about a guy who just got out of a horrible relationship...he has alot of issues with trust and love because he's been hurt so badly. this is her telling him that i'm here for you and we don't have to rush things. she's comforting him and telling him that everything will be fine with time and she is here whenever he's ready to talk about it. the "i'll pretend i don't know of your sins" makes me think that maybe he had a part in the bad relationship too, but she's not going to judge him on that. kind of sweet really... |

i love love love this song. it is by far, besides Flake, jack johnson's best song. like wrapid, i think this is a breakup song, the ultimate "let's stay friends" way of going about it. it's just a way of saying "this isn't going to work out, but i'm still here for you, kind of like 'let's deal with this together.' "you said this was all you have and its all i need but blah blah because it fell apart and i guess its all you knew and all I had but now we only have only confused hearts i guess all we had is really all we need" This is him saying sure we may of had a good relationship, but oh well because obviously it's not working out. the "blah blah blah" part is just saying that they need to stop making excuses of why not to break up. they still need each other, but don't need to force a relationship. too bad all breakups aren't like this... :) |

| for me, this song takes place at the end of a relationship that went wrong...they are trying to go out, meeting other people, but they're just not seeing in these new people what they saw in each other, but they know they can't be together. They're desperately trying to have a "good time" with someone else, but are only thinking of each other. "You know you made my heart real strong even if you made my head real thin" is my favorite line. It explains every bad relationship...you fell in love and you knew you should just walk away, but you were thinking with your heart instead of your head...bittersweet :) | |

| this is possibly my most favorite song ever. it's so pretty. the lyrics are the most amazing things i 've ever heard. it best is summed up as that resistance we have to falling in love because of the consenquence of getting hurt. to me, this song is about a guy who keeps telling himself he's not in love and doesn't care about this girl he's dating, but as soon as he imagines being without her, he gets scared and realizes that he is completely falling in love with her. His friend, at the begginning is trying to make him realize this but he is in denial. the coconut island and bufferfly thing, i think is just him thinking this would all be easier if he didn't have to feel for her, but he does. so he's just thinking about breaking it all off, but then "thinks about the consenquences..." of losing her. "shade of gray" is him coming around to admitting to himself that maybe he can let himself love her. "I can't get no sleep in a quiet room" refers to the later line of "talking in her sleep, she's keeping me awake" saying that he doesn't want to stop sleeping next to her. I don't really get the ending. i can't decide if she ends up leaving him because he won't take it to the next level, or if he just goes on to dismiss the love notion and forget about the relationship...sad :( | |

i don't know about the abusive part, but yeah, i agree that this song is about a generally negative relationship that the girl is in and he's just kind of telling her to consider leaving her guy for him. she wants to but is scared and he's telling her she's "wasting her life" but creating some illusion of a good relationship... "When you open up your wings to speak I wish you'd let me in" *those are my favorite lines :) |
