Pink Floyd – Pow R. Toc H. Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm pretty sure that playful rhythm was taken from a jazz piece called "Hambone" by Archie Shepp in a 1965 album called Fire Music (http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:kxfrxqygld0e). A Piper at the Gates of Dawn came out two years later. This song sounds almost exactly like it, so it'd be quite a coincidence if they didn't. Anyways, I like Pink Floyd's psychedelic version a little better, but I'm not surprised that they would take riffs from jazz musicians. After all, their name comes from two esoteric blues artists, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Beautiful song, but every time I hear it, I can't help but be reminded of Tom Wait's song, 'Lonely', whenever she does that minor scale climb. They're both great songs though.

That insert that sounds like a mantra ("oooh, life, death....") I'm pretty sure is a recording from the opening sequence of 'Guru Sri Chinmoy Aphorism' by Carlos Santana and Alice Coltrane's album, Illuminations. Just an interesting note.

This song is delicious. This VU album proves that they could have been as big a hit rock band as the Rolling Stones if they wanted to.

Can – Doko E Lyrics 16 years ago
Doko E in Japanese means, roughly speaking "where to go?" in English. This song really does capture the displacement of a Japanese foreigner (Damo Suzuki of course) living in Cologne, Germany where the band was formed. You can sense Suzuki's sense of bitterness in his sarcastic whistful tone. But the song is also slightly playful.

I know he's speaking Japanese, but he's got such an accent that it really sounds like he's saying, "Go back to Germany" over and over again in English.

Can – Soup Lyrics 16 years ago
I totally dig this song from one of CAN's best albums. You could write a whole book on any CAN song. I don't know why no one has commented on this song yet.

This song's Frankenstein-esque "epilogue" builds up magnificently to the climactic narrative part, which I consider the equivalent to the extremely experimental tracks of Tago Mago, "Aumgn" and "Peking O", in the sense that they reject a sense of rhythmic melody in place for abstract nonsensical vocalization. They invent their own abstract expressive language in the same manner as Sigur Ros, only Suzuki uses the overt tone of his expressive voice rather than the sound of the words to express the emotion. (And who better to do that than the amazing Damo Suzuki!) The use of unique percussion and abrasive synths is also similar to the counterpart songs in Tago Mago.

But if any of you have heard CAN's album, Unlimited Edition, which has all their early b-side tracks, you'd know from their E.F.S (ethnilogical forgery series) tracks that the band was very interested in World music of indigenous cultures (understandably so, and you can definitely hear it in their eclectic range of percussion instruments). For example, a Brazilian influence can be seen in CAN's Peking O, when a bossa-nova/samba section begins to appear about 2:36 min into the song. But with a Japanese member in the group, Damo Suziki, there is quite a bit of influence in Japanese folk music. You can hear it in in this song, which sounds like a modern reproduction of traditionaly Japanese war music which uses similar theatrics and drum techniques. Aumgn, though slightly more deranged, has a similar sound, evocative of the summoning of Kami spirits from Japanese mythology.

Though their music may sound "strange" to those not used to it, I wouldn't necessarily label CAN's music as "druggy" as so many people often stereotype. Their "strange" sound is probably more the result of an influence from non-Western cultural music that sounds foreign to us, rather than from the surreal dreams of acid trip. However, that's just my opinion, and if they were inspired by drugs, that wouldn't make the music any less enjoyable.

Sonic Youth – Candle Lyrics 17 years ago
couldBanyone's right. The song deals with life and the escape from it through drugs. In western art, especially in the Vanitas (Vanity) still life paintings, the candle has always been representative our life as the flame is time burning away our life. When we die our life goes out like a flame. The album cover itself is even a painting by the artist Gerhard Richter, which I think is good evidence that they're using the same symbol of a candle in western art in their song. Although, I think it deals more with the escape from mortality than anything, mostly because of the lines:

"I can't wait
I can't stay, uh candle
Gotta change my mind before it burns out"

I maybe looking too deeply into it, but I interpret this as "I can't wait [until death/when my candle burns out]" because when we die, so does our mortality. "Gotta change my [mortal] mind before it [dies] out" probably a reference to drugs as an escape from harsh reality.

To me, the song has a half-serious, half-sarcastic tone to it. It's very energetic.

lol. this is the funniest argument i've seen. the song is funny too. yes, i'd have to agree with obscure, but also, because of the artist's abiguity, it could be just about anything. i think he meant it to be that way. yeah, he obviously meant what he said in the interview, but also, it could be something more. it can at least be interpereted that way. when i first heard the song, i was thinking a lot of possible things he could be talking about: a girl, a pet, an imaginary friend, a state of mind sex, drugs, candy, a dream, religion. all of them could fit in there if you stretched it a little bit.

Tom Waits – The Ocean Doesn't Want Me Lyrics 19 years ago
Coolness. I love his sense of humor. Dark sarcasm is the best! Throughout this whole album, he talks about death in a semi-comical sarcastic, yet serious and dark tone. I think it's Tom's most focused album, and it's personally my favorite. I love how the dark brooding shadowy echoes and the troglodite, caveman-esque, junkyard crashing/banging percusion compliment each other. The lyrics are a genious. Like the world doesn't have enough room for his mortal slag heap of excriment, and his soul wanders forever. It sounds creepy or comical, but what underlies that tone is a work of art. Great Job Tom Waits!

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
Also, I don't know what it was originally intended to be, but Buckley's intention for this song was to be a broken desperate love song. A song about how girls pull him away and lure him to bed and break his heart (broken hallelujah). Yes, it could be taken religiously, but I don't think that's what its original purpose was for. It was made to show how love fails him and all that's left is his broken 'hallelujah'. Yes, I'm a Christian, and i'm aware of the story of King David (btw, the artist altered the story to a fiction for artistic meaningful reasons, so don't think this is directly from the Bible. It's like John Milton's Paradise Lost. Yea he talks about heaven and hell and Adam and Eve, but his ideas about them are completely fictional and aren't meant to be based completely factually off the bible.) This story of King David is just an analogy that the artist alludes to, to demonstrate what he's been through. Then he compares the love of Gods to the love of mortals, when he says, "Well, maybe there's a god above but all i've ever learned from love was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you". This peice is truely a lovesick, passionate, powerfully emotional song, and is not necessarilly taken to be truely as a love song, but but a song of lost hope, that a stereotypic tragic singer with serious drinking problems, as Buckley himself, would typically sing in a bar or some other moody atmosphere.

Jim O'Rourke – Get A Room Lyrics 19 years ago
I think that's wrong. Knowing how cynical Jim O'Rourke is, I'd say this song is about how bitterly lonely he is. He's sitting there by himself in the lonely seat by himself. He's the only one to sit there. The seat symbolizes his place in life. "It’s always me in the only seat". Then he goes on saying, "That has a canopy ", which shows his veiw of everyone else in his life. This 'canopy', shows us that when there's no one to go home with, he can see everyone and how they react to each other. He talks about "those with company", which I see as people who aren't lonely and have freinds, partners, and family. "I’d like nothing more to do than to watch the desperation on your face "--this is where he shows that he's so lonely that he's starting to get bitter. He sees all these couples and gets so frustrated that he can't have this, that he gets satisfaction out of seeing relationships fail. "If I gave you, one night to live would you know who to choose to take home" shows his desperation when no one chooses him. "And if she falls asleep before the night is through because she has to go to work and you don’t" seems obvious to me that he's implying that he's bitter because people find him boring or dull. Next three lines show that times passing and he's growing impatient. "And you try to move towards her but you can’t move your shoulder"--he's afraid to come near her because, he's afraid of rejection. "Maybe if you kick her but your leg’s getting weaker"--just an example of his dark sarcasm. "You sure picked a winner"--sarcasm again. The rest of it shows his aging and impatience again.

P.O.D. – Abortion Is Murder Lyrics 19 years ago
Viro I agree with exactly. I can't say that I know when life EXACTLY begins. I can't prove it, but because I don't know for sure that life begins at a certain point, I'm going to be safe and not risk murdering by any means. I'm not going to argue about abortion being murder until I am certain that it is murder, and vise versa. But the whole issue on abortion and whether it's living or not is a secular argument, not a religious one. The religious argument is that you're putting something that God controlls into your own hands. Since I am religious, I don't believe that man should have control of life that God gives them. People argue with me by saying, "Well if that's true, why don't we get rid of hospitals as well, since we are controlling our lives, by prolonging them, by medical means." Interesting argument. I have mixed feelings about the medical feild. I don't see a need for it, nor do I see a need for prolonging our lives, so in that case, I don't even think we should have a medical feild. On the other hand, God gave us life as a gift, and gave us the human nature so we'd want to live. He wants us on earth, and wants us to want to stay on earth. It's his will. So we could be fufilling his will by staying on the earth. Also, death is irreversable, but life only occurs once in existance, so in that case, the medical feild is good. Abortion is wrong in this case because, 1.) we are not fufilling the nature that God gave us, 2.) We're controlling life of beings on earth, 3.) We're committing an act of selfishness. But, my political views are secular, because I think it's fair to force what I believe on everyone out of selfishness. It's their choice, not mine, for them not to sin, and they don't even see it as sin. I can only advise one to do what I believe is right.

Pink Floyd – Pigs (Three Different Ones) Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, this album reminds me so much of George Orwell's political parody, Animal Farm. When the pigs take over the political system and treat other animals like slaves. You can really feel the anger in this song. It's a great album. This song is so political. correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he's also somewhat aluding to the fable with the 3 little pigs. He has three pig songs. One for the left, which would be the straw house, one for the middle, which is this one, with the brick house, and the one on the right which is brick. The dog might be aluding to a wolf in fables? I don't know. But I think that the houses represent the three types of government. The right and left wings are too strict or loose (capitalism/communism). I'm not sure.

P.O.D. – Abortion Is Murder Lyrics 19 years ago
Again I have no time. I'll make this short. I'll reply to all of them after I've read all the links you gave me. All I'm going to ask is, for #8, did you read Ephesian ch.2, v.8-10? In NIV, it says, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--NOT by WORKS, so that no one can boast". There's other verses that say you are not saved by works as well, but I can't remember them from the top of my head. I'd have to search for them. As long as you have a relationship with Christ, you're okay, but if you're only doing works to get to heaven, you'll never get anywhere. The only way you could do this is follow the law COMPLETELY. I believe in personal atonement by repentendance and redemption, from God's grace, as the verse says. I don't know if the Catholic version is different, or you interperet it differently, or you passed that verse up, or you just don't believe that verse, but to me, it's pretty clear that no one can get to heaven by works alone. There's no giant divine scale that measures and compares your good deeds to your bad ones. If you repent and have accepted Christ into your heart, he cleans you of your sins (not that you just keep sinning or anything, but you understand what i mean). As for the mortal sins, I believe all sins, mortal or non-mortal, are equal in the eyes of God. I'll find you that verse later too. Seven deadly sins are deadly, but they're equivalent to any other sin (except blasphemy, which instantly brings you to hell). Constant repentance and devotion to God is the key.

a few more questions: 1.) From observation, pretty much every Catholic I know cusses, including you. Why's that? I don't take cussing seriously, but why even do it?
2.) What do you and other Catholics feel about Greek orthidox--the non-Catholic, non-Protestant sect of Christianity?

I wouldn't go to a purely Catholic website, but a non-denominational one. I'm not apart of any denomination. I don't believe Catholics go to hell, and I have nothing against them, but I believe a lot of parts of their doctrine are not Biblically correct, and come from nowhere. This doesn't mean they go to hell, but I just don't think it's a very great denomination. I have plenty of Catholic friends as a matter of fact.

To sum up what i just said: Athiests: if life is pointless, what's the point of proving life is pointless? Why don't you kill yourselves, if you truely believe in such meaningless truths. It must be harder for you guys than anyone else. I actually feel sorry for you guys. I believe your whole life you'll be looking for pleasure until you die, and then you live eternally in hell. Why even risk going to hell? What happened to "better be safe then sorry". It's propostrous to say that you KNOW for sure that God doesn't exist--about as proposterous as saying you know God does exist. And Christians--don't be wimpy. Most Christians are unintelligent, and ignorant. Why do you have to make us look bad?! keep you options open, think outside the box first before you say you believe Christianity. I wish the world wasn't so ignorant.

Radiohead – Dollars and Cents Lyrics 19 years ago
This has got to be one of the best songs Radiohead's ever done (along with "Bullet Proof...I Wish I Was...", "Street Spirit", "The Bends", and "Amazing Sounds of Orgy"). It sounds beautifully brooding, with a modern twist in it. I love this beautifuly repetative resonance! It has a modern jazzy feel to it, and at the same it has a rock beat. It has a desperate tone to it that cries out to you. It seems to me that Thom must have been influenced by Miles Davis, or Talk Talk (after all, their favorite artist is Mark Hollis). This song is very close to perfection!

This is a very strange song. I love it. It has two totally different beats that overlap each other. The first time i heard the song, the only thought i could think was "Woah!". It has an enigmatic tone to peice. I like it how hard the beat is to follow, but after three listens or so, you quickly adapt. It's not too easy to listen to, but just give it a chance, and you'll realize how great this peice is!
