| Mute Math – Typical Lyrics

Why is it that it always seems like an argument between religious and secular music? Like a band of Christians like Mute Math (or even Mae) aren't ever allowed to sing about secular things; or a secular band like U2 never allowed to sing about God. It's quite ludicrous.
Moreover, a song is a piece of art, so you're going to have your own interpretations...there's no wrong or right answer. While there's the artist's personal intentions, as soon as the art is released, the meaning lies in perception. That's art.
Enough about the squabbles.
I just love how this song promotes living a better life on your own terms. You could argue it's a song about Christian morality...but most religions preach higher living. I'd say this song is more about strong personal morals. |

i agree with consciouspilot's interpretation of the song...i've been going through sort of the same thing. you get older, you get tired of the same cycles that your long-time friends have been perpetually stuck in since high school; there are times that you can't stand hanging out with those close friends, but you still call them "brother," and they probably feel the same way because you're growing up without them. despite the growing differences, you can't really ever turn your back on them, so you repeat that cycle.
"tonight brother pour me one more.
yeah tonight i'll just cut you one more." |

personally, i think there's something that everyone can relate to in this song, and i love it. i can't help but laugh everytime i hear the "You know that one auntie, you don't wanna be rude / But every holiday nobody eatin' her food" line...because i think everyone's got one of those in their families. |

everybody just needs to calm the fuck down on the arguments, seriously. i might've been pissed off that i couldn't get tickets to either of "the yeah yeah yeahs" shows in LA, and blamed little teenyboppers who saw one of their videos on MTV, and who knows? the same thing will probably happen for the next "modest mouse" show to hit LA...but seriously, i don't give a shit if people listen to music to pump up their own image, or just to listen to the music itself, or whatever...the fact is, people are getting exposed to GOOD MUSIC, for once. i think everyone should be happy about that.
fuck, all these arguments made me forget what i really wanted to say about the song...which is why i thought this site existed in the first place. |

this song lacks the depth of "jesus walks" or "all falls down," but it's nice to hear kanye having fun on this track...it's also incredibly nice to hear the sick string riffs that miri ben-ari is playing in the background. |

unrelated to the lyrics, but if you pick up the may issue of SPIN magazine, it has this hilarious article about jay-z's 99 problems. |

i agree totally with dansr, just because i felt the whole relationship with God thing in this song this morning on my way to school, and i totally relate to this song.
i think that the song is about having been given a great blessing, or a problematic blessing--a blessing in disguise, if anything...and this blessing, through all of the trials and tribulations of it, brings you closer to God through faith.
i think the "if you'd be honest..." lines regard the doubt that comes with being a new christian, the beginning of having real faith in the Lord...but despite the hesitance, you're still willing to believe in Him, because that belief gives life meaning.
the "is this what you wanted..." part starts with whatever blessing has been given, and the willingness to accept Jesus in your life, and realizing how good life is once you've accepted Him into your heart.
the "nights are forever..." part, i think that "the night" is an allusion to everything that is unknown, and that God will be the guide to light the path (the heat=the Sun).
that's just my interpretation...i could have been reading into this WAAAY TOO DEEPLY, but, i'm entitled to my opinion. |

dude...something that you can't get out of the lyrics: miri ben-ari totally tears this song up with the violin solo...aside from the awesome rhyme and rhythm scheme, that violin solo totally captures the energy of this song like crazy. |

i'm agnostic, but this song is really powerful. when you hear this song, you can't help but want to listen to it, no matter what religious denomination you are, the title itself makes you think and gets you interested. the things that kanye has to say about his relationship with Jesus, and society's relationship with religion, are so right on. lyrically, the song is super deep, especially when he gets into how religious songs rarely ever get any clout in society (ironically, since american society seems to be getting more "faith-based" as ever)...especially when he talks about how radio stations will allow "guns, sex, lies, and videotapes" but rarely positive influences on the airwaves. the beat, aside from the lyrics, is tight. |

i'm not the biggest fan of current hip-hop, but kanye west really stands out to me, in a good way. this song, like many of his others, is incredibly intelligent. he has an awesome way of exposing how woman, man, and society makes up for their personal "insecurrities" so blindly with material possessions, without thinking of the consequences...and does so without being incredibly preachy, because he realizes it's a way of getting by, but also a sort of disease. he gets his point across very well. |

wow, music_man's iteration makes a lot of sense...i'm not very religious, but i bought the Mae CD at a christian bookstore, and i've been struggling to find the connection, because the music seemed very secular (well, not particularly religious)...but, kudos to music_man. |

this is, indeed, the one featuring robert smith...and it was the sole reason why i'd bought the cd (although, i do enjoy a good portion of the rest of it)...but, i think this song is an extension of 'easy target' since it revolves around the same girl (holly) lyrically...i think it's about a guy who is involved with two women, but the woman he really wants to be with keeps on pushing him away. |
