However, that's all I have to say that's good about your post. You don't know what the fuck you're talking about. I'm assuming (based on you meantioning y our christian values and seeing that your username is "hornplayer") that you're from a Christian family most likely with conservative values, and also that you're most likely a nerd.
First of all, you're "political correctness" in your posting is nice, but it's bullshit. Being politically correct is restrictive to human expression, and that's one of the greatest things about eminem. He tells it like it is, because he doesn't give a fuck. If you fail to see the quality in this song and Eminem's work, you don't understand people. *Real* people know what Eminem is talking about. Working minimum wage, surviving, not living. It sucks. Eminem tells it like it is, that's why people like him. They can relate to him. They know what it's like to work a dead end job and drugs being your only escape from boredom. I'm lucky enough to be a little better off than that, but it's only because I too, don't give a fuck. In fact, a large amount of adolescents in this country just don't give a fuck, because of reasons eminem states in this song (check out rock bottom too, or any of his other songs.) So before you go preaching your christian propaganda to us, people who are interested in sharing their thoughts about what their favorite songs are about, realize that you are not wanted here. Go to your high school band concert, I'll be passing around a joint with my buddies listening to some Eminem. |

This is one of my favorite songs. It's a great anthem for the hippie generation.
The song is a story of a character who met someone inspirational (the guy in the band) and followed him and joined the hippie movement. The next stanza seems like a conversation between her and the man. She wants to be part of the "movement" (for lack of a better term). The final stanza speaks of how Woodstock was a culmination for their entire movemtn. Everyone was happy. Happy peace lovers.
The chorus is pretty self explanatory: we're made of the same stuff as stars and gold, billion year old carbon. "And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden" probably means something different for everyone. |

I'm a person who loves rock music and I also really like good rap music such as 50, nas, eminem. I'm also a university student, but I also know a thing or two about drugs. People shouldn't be ignorant and say "rap isn't real music" or "rock sucks" or anything because it all depends on personal style and how well you can relate. Sure, lots of people relate to rock because it's what our parents listened to, and it's good, it's not very controversial. However, a lot of people don't like rap. They don't like how it has "taken over mtv" (which by the way, it hasn't, teen pop and stupid "road rules vs. real world challenge" shows have taken over mtv). It's ignorant to say rap isn't "real music" just because it's not your favorite genre. Music is anything with rhythm and melody. Rap and Rock both have these two elements. And don't say that rap sucks just because the "lyrics arent deep" there is just as much depth in rap as there is in rock. Sure bands like Pink Floyd are once in a generation bands which are incredibly deep, however there is rap that is just as good, it's just different. 50's lyrics are not stupid, they're real. 50 is a thug from the ghetto, and the only way to get rich when you're like that is by selling drugs. He raps about his experiences with that, which also led to him getting shot. It's a dangerous lifestyle, but also very interesting to learn about, especially if you have ever been involved in the drug business. Now that 50 is a successful rapper doesn't mean he has sold out. If I could get millions for making an album about my life's experiences, I'd do it in a heartbeat. This song is about 50 celebrating his success. He came from nothing and he's a millioinaire now. He's also saying that even though he's successful he's still in "the grind" if you know he means. He's real, and he's good. Real good. |

In this song, 50's calling out fakes like Ja Rule and saying that they talk like they're bad, but they're fake, they're "wankstas". On the other hand, 50 cent is a real thug. He's not lying about anything. If he can make a shitload of money rapping why should he waste his time selling dope. He even says "I get what you get for a brick to talk greasy." 50's been there and knows what it's like, and if he can make money doing this, something not so dangerous, why would he continue to keep hustlin on the corner. And no, Jeff, no matter how good of a producer had, you wouldn't sound good rapping. |

Not to burst anybody's bubble, but there's a good chance that this song was written about an addiction to heroin. I don't know for sure if Gavin ever was addicted to heroin, but there are many metaphors of this song that can be interpreted to relate to heroin addiciton...
"must be your skin that I'm sinking in..." - Simple enough, describing injecting a needle into his skin.
"everything's gone white, and everything's grey." - describing how it is when he's high and out of it.
"i'm never alone
i'm alone all the time
are you at one
or do you lie
we live in a wheel
where everyone steals
but when we rise it's like strawberry fields" - Talking about how heroin is an escape from the pains of the real world (track marks are often described as "strawberry fields."
"I treated you bad, you bruised my face." - Talking about overusing heroin, and the repurcussions.
"I needed you more...." - addiction...
I believe that Gavin described a troubled relationship as a parallel to heroin addiction. If he really did, then it was quite a brilliant way to present it. This is a beautiful song, and one of my favorites, but it could be about anything. |

I don't see how anybody could hate Jimmy Page. The guy did so much positive things for music, it's insane and very ignorant to hate him. In my opinion he's the second best guitar player of all time, behind Hendrix, and he's been a major influence for most of the best bands of the last 20 years (just as he was influenced by Hendrix and Chuck Berry and Coltrane and Walker and all those other guys.) Also, just because their music came out 20+ years ago doesn't mean we should forget about it. Good music is timeless. Bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd created the most intricate, beautiful music of our time and we should thank them for that. Nobody since them has been able to compare. And all the bands that come close (I'm sure you all have different opinions of what bands come close) have been influenced by Zeppelin in a way. And by the way, the only reason Zeppelin and Floyd are "mainstream" is because they're so fucking good. They're not some prepackaged boy band who were groomed to be the best and most popular bands in the world, they were real guys with real problems who worked hard and produced the best music available. There are many new bands who are close to Zeppelin/Floyd status of our day and I love these bands, but I'll never stop loving Zeppelin, Floyd, the Doors, the Beatles, Bob Marley, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, etc. All these "dinosaurs" created great music which have deeply influenced many peoples lives and continue to do so today, and nobody has the right to "diss" one of these bands because they're too popular. We should appreciate what they've done for the music world, and if you don't like their music then listen to something else and appreciate it for what it is. |

If you choose the latter, I suggest you listen to some music by John Lennon (Imagine in particular), Rage Against the Machine, Tool, System of a Down, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, and others. Also read as many books as possible. My favorites for freeing your mind are books by Carlos Castaneda (Journey to Ixtlan and A Separate Reality in particular) and The Grapes Of Wrath by John Steinbeck (which illustrates government oppression better than any other book.)
By the way, smoking a joint never hurt anybody, and it will reveal a lot to you about yourself. |

This song shows that system of a down is a truly enlightened band rather than just an angst ridden group of guys. They see past the material and see that the way we are living and the system that tells us how to live is fucked up. However, this song illustrates how they think even deeper than that, in acknowledging how we are all one and we need to free our minds to see this (through meditation, or drugs to an extent). If anybody has ever read anything by Carlos Castaneda particularly Journey To Ixtlan or A Separate Reality, you will see the parallels between this song and those books. If anybody is really touched by this song I suggest you read some Castaneda because his books have changed my life. |

I love this song because I relate to it totally. I have a very similar world view to John and even though some people say I'm crazy to believe it ("I'm a dreamer..."), but based on the popularity of this song I'm definitely not the only one. Instead of just agreeing with the message in the song though, people have to start implementing the message in this song.
Things like religion, countries, and money are the reasons for war and fighting, and if there was none of this then there'd be no war. And by religion I think John is saying that organized religion is the problem and not just believe in God because I don't see how that would adversely affect world peace. I think he's talking about how theres so much fighting in places like the middle east because of religion, even though the religions are very similar like all religions are. |

This song, to me, is about how knowledge and enlightenment is right in front of us but we cannot see it (just like the wind.)
"how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?" and "how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?" are very clear anti-war messages and Dylans saying that people still don't realize that war is pointless.
Additionally, the line about the mountain washing to the see shows that nothing lasts forever, the line about people not being free shows that there is too much oppression in the world. He also talks about people turning their heads and pretending they do not see the trouble in the world. Dylan is saying that the answer to all these questions is right in front of us, yet we do not see it.

The normal person has to work their ass off at a shit job for nothing more than a little house they're always paying off and a tv to watch. However, these modern peasents are used to it, and don't do anything about it. The bureacracy has trained them to be happy with this tedious life they are living, and thus they keep it copacetic (completely satisfactory - the dictionary definition) and don't do anything to better their situation. |

While we stand aside and look." The people in power kill all who oppose them because they are afraid of losing their power. Men like Martin Luther King Jr. and Bob Marley were seen as threats to the current power structure, and they were eliminated. Just like the Jews in power who had Jesus killed, we stand and watch and don't do anything about it. These martyrs give their lives in an attempt to help us free our minds, and we don't do anything about it. It's time to do something.
