it was indeed written in a short time for a bet with his low level drugs dealer, you can see him say it in interview on YouTube. So no time for very complicated meanings. I think it’s about an affair he has while on tour. Not lots of affairs as he says he ‘held her for so long’ , he sounds sad, and he was going home. He had to be seen to be alone when the doors of the plane opened at his destination, obviously because he was married. So the affair lost out to the marriage. But interesting that he says that travelling at twice the speed of sound makes it easy to get burned. He is the one doing the travelling so the inference is that he got burned and was sad to leave the lady who was in love with him. |

I think the biggest reoccurring theme in this song is the lack of choice that we have as individuals due to things out of our control which is reaffirmed by every chorus. Each chorus is in agreement with the previous verse even though all the verses they refer to are unpleasant/wrong/undesirable. To me, it seems this is because it already happened/it doesn't matter if we do/don't because, as a species, someone else will. The first verse alludes to the cultural influences beyond our control (tourists of the dead), the second alludes to the historical forces beyond our control that we can't do anything about (someone already sold out the "secrets of the universe" in a vile manner), and the third verse reflects the uncontrollable factors on the individual level. To me, the last verse is the most striking (especially if you're familiar with the principles of cognition and neuropsychology). I broke it down like this: "Toss the map on the ground It isn't accurate anyways" (classic style of modest mouse acknowledging that the system is rigged/corrupted from the start) The following portion shows the gradual and somewhat involuntary and insidious change as we are forced to grow in our society: "We've been getting away We've been getting away We are strangers to ourselves" This section alludes to jobs/responsibilities that take our time (and essentially life), things that we never thought we would end up doing: "We sneak out Drip by drip Through paper cuts on our hands Day after day" This portion reaffirms that who become is foreign, even to us. "Nothing's quite the same We are tourists in our own heads" |

This is one of my favourites of the Achtung Baby album and has many meanings. I believe the whole album is about faith and deals with the relationship between Judas and Jesus. Maybe Bono views himself as Judas who questions him beliefs and the messages of Jesus (region), and took the money (fame and career) before his faith. The song is a conversation between Judas and Jesus where Judas express his confusion and his disbelief in the in the track Jesus is leading them. Leaving him empty/outside and viewing Jesus as dangerous (for himself and the group) - don't know what he wants. The song can be seen in relationship to Until the End of The World where Judas finally betrays Jesus. Many of the songs can be interpreted in the same way and follows the relationship between Jesus, Judas and other before and after Jesus death. A little bit like Bono's Jesus Christ Superstar album. . |
