I Wish You Well Lyrics
I'm gonna check my scars at home
Gonna cash my chips and roam
Gonna walk before you fade to black
I'm gonna write a new resume
I'm gonna write you off the page
I'm gonna take what we might take away
And you might find a brighter day
Might find a brighter day
And in another year
The pain will disappear and I
Will look back on this life as if it were a scene
In a film somebody made for you and me
I wish you well
Oh I wish you well
Na na na na na na
I wish you well
She wants to be set free
Wants the space to feel love and be angry
And I watch her bounce off the walls
While the chips they start to fall
Then in a little while I see
That distant smile returning
Just like a ghost in a dream
That we had way back when
Then she'll turn and smile and say
Come again
And in another year
The pain will disappear
We'll look back on this life as if it were a scene
Somebody wrote about you and me
Somebody made about you and me
I wish you well
I cannot believe there's
nothing left to save
Hard as a hammer she wants me
To come again and again
I'm down on my knees
Won't you come again
Don't you need relief
Don't you need relief
And in another year
The pain will disappear
And I will look back on this life
As if it were a scene
And in a little while
I'll see that distant smile returning
Just like back in the days
When we were so naive
In a film somebody made
I wish you well (Repeated)
Gonna cash my chips and roam
Gonna walk before you fade to black
I'm gonna write a new resume
I'm gonna write you off the page

Well it's a terrific break up song. He knows he wants her out of his life.
"Gonna cash my chips and roam/Gonna walk before you fade to black/I'm gonna write a new resume/I'm gonna write you off the page". Here, he's made up his mind to leave.
"And in another year/The pain will disappear and I Will look back on this life as if it were a scene In a film somebody made for you and me" He knows that it will take time for her to get over him and vice-versa (he still has feelings for her). And in a year, it won't seem real anymore.
"I cannot believe there's nothing left to save." Uh-oh, his bravado is starting to crack. He himself can't believe it's over."
I was surprised that this single never clicked. It is a much better tune than LIFE IS A HIGHWAY.
It sounds like a sad situation. She's obviously not happy in the relationship, and he has to leave before she and the relationship are completely destroyed. He clearly cares deeply for her, and still has hope that they can be reconciled after a break. (This may well be based on Tom's own relationship with his wife, which went through a bit of a rocky patch around that time but which eventually came back together.)
This beautifully sounding song is like a script or playbook of how to think about transforming a romantic relationship into an amicable one. The singer comes to grips with many realizations, and predicts how his love will react to many of the things he will say and do now that he has made the realization. Much of it is written to sound good with the music, but it does coherently describe much of of the feelings and realities that one would experience. It may be interpreted as grandiose to think they are worthy of a film script or a book, but how else can you motivate a fan base of listeners to believe his words if he were less dramatic ? Awesome song that I always turn up the volume to hang on every word.
