How this song didn't make the final cut is beyond me, I love it. It's so anthemic (but in a knowing way, as the first verse illustrates). This band has a track record of putting out bonus tracks that are better than some of the album tracks (Forget Everything from Sticks And Stones, which this song is actually pretty similar to). Anyway, I love it to death, and I love shesamaverick's interpretation as well!

Are there official lyrics for this? Because I hear it slightly differently:

This could be the song
Everyone relates to
Another melody,
Something we go through
These could be the words
To use in good fortune
To keep in the back of mind
For your back up plan
It's the beat that keeps you marching on
So take your jabs,
I've got armor on
Reasons will reveal itself
In due time
So for luck,
Will you cross your fingers?

This could be the verse,
Always reminding you
Of your battle scars
All your could have been's
Only I know what I've been through
But for luck I still cross my fingers

Death Cab for Cutie – Doors Unlocked and Open Lyrics 14 years ago
This could just be me, but reading the lyrics as a whole now, I think the chorus could be a metaphor for sex.

I agree with tonius that the narrator is saying they will create their own world within the city (ocean of sound). The chorus is obviously about two (or more, but let's stick with two) people. And the phrasing of it just makes me think it's a romantic relationship (I read a review of this album suggesting Ben wrote a lot of these lyrics about Zooey). And it's the idea of when you're in love, when you *make* love, it's like being in your own world. Moments suspended in time. Slow motion. "Doors unlocked and open" could be a metaphor for...well, do I have to explain that one? ;-) "and be free" could refer to their lack of inhibition with each other romantically/sexually. "Down, down, down in the ocean..."

This song is fantastic

Also, it's:
If a girl wont kiss

(I can't believe it)

And once or twice he says:
If she don't give me the eye
She must drive on the other side

CKY – Doubled Up On Trauma Lyrics 16 years ago
These are pretty wrong...I know there's no lyrics in the booklet but come on...

They took a piece of the evil me, the evil me
Expressing that I was not asked THE PITCH was unimpressive and overspread

We can't conceive of the whole ordeal when the outcome's real
Going on to become a mess, there's no turning back, that's in your head (hands?)
You can't believe what you have ALREADY SEEN through this EVIL DEED
Waking up to recognize there's not any doubt you've been killing the evil me

...An unbelieveable breed

Stepping on the feet of unnatural (the natural?) anatomy
Doubled up on trauma and TWINNING the catastrophy

Your crazed aversions of the completed task have come to pass
And moving on to bring out the best of the one THAT SAID, the other's dead
You can't conceive what you really need to kill the greed
Waking up to recognize there's not any doubt you've been killing the evil me

No comments? I love this song.

Double-post sorry, but I realised after hearing them near each other today, that this song is really comparable to 'If You Don't, Don't' from the Bleed American album. Comparing them is a good way to see how much they matured on Futures =) 'Work' may be a poppy sng but it's sharp as hell, not a wasted word or a spare second in this one.

Jimmy Eat World – Work Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song.

It seems like the lyrics on this album actually get quite dark and bitter in places, even when on the surface they might seem like happy songs. This one is a good example.

I take it that he's trying to convince someone to sleep with him (I don't see how the first verse can mean anything else, I really don't) and it's just a more jaded view of love. It seems like he feels a lot more for the person than he is letting on but he knows it's not mutual. The chorus is about getting out of the club or wherever they are while she's still in the right mood to go along with what he wants, before the night ends and the spell is broken.

And yeah, "work" doesn't mean a job, and I think that line is referring more to their balance between "work and play", not about the two things in general if you know what I mean. The key point is "to mix the way we do" - it could be okay to mix the two but in this song the narrator is putting in all the work but for the other person it's just a game.

I think they based the video around highschool because they didn't want to shoot a video about one-night stands and alienate their teenage audience, lol. It's great with JEW how the music can sound so sparkly and happy but when you read into it, the lyrics can get really viscious.

Jimmy Eat World – Polaris Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm sure this was mentioned somewhere else (maybe in the comments for another song) but this really could be about someone who is depressed and on medication...

"I've always been afraid" - the narrator is afraid of his partner's condition, and he hasn't always dealt with it well ("I know I've made mistakes")

"Please answer the door" - a reference to the times that the partner is too lost in their depression to be aware of the narrator's existence.

"In your darkest time, it's just enough to know it's there" - in the depths of the depression, the knowledge of the love they have is only just enough to keep them sane

"When you go, I'll let you be/But you're kill everything in me" - when his partner spirals out of control the narrator knows he will have to let it happen but it will kill him to see them like that

"Whisper what I need/Something pretty" - the narrator wants his partner to be "pretty" i.e. happy/normal for him. The next 3 lines could be ironic or bitter, I am not sure.

"Are you happy where you're standing still?/Do you really want the sugar pill?" - this is fairly obvious, the depression is keeping his partner "standing still" and the drugs are not a cure, they're just a "sugar pill"

It's not an interpretation that covers every single lyric in the song...but I feel that the bitter, almost sinister tone to the verses justifies this reading. I'm not sure this is what I really think the song's about but it's one interpretation and one thing's for sure, judging by the lyrics and music of the verses, this is definitely not a happy song!

Jimmy Eat World – 23 Lyrics 18 years ago
Just discovered this song tonight (God knows why). It is amazing, like so many others have said.

It seems to have this uncanny ability to relate to everybody's situation, including mine. The lines "You'll sit alone forever/If you wait for the right time/What are you hoping for?" hit really hard and prompted me to do something which amounted to nothing but it made me realise there was no point putting it off etc. etc.

Way back on page 1 someone mentioned Jim being around 23 when Clarity was being made. I think this song could easily relate to a musician who's career is just starting to take off, and he has to make the choice between following his career, and staying with his relationship. You don't need me to copy-paste lyrics that fit, this is an easy one. Just something else to think about.

Also "Don't give away the end/The one thing that stays mine" - I think this could be about having the hope that things will work out in the future. Like he is clinging to the idea that everything will end happily, and telling the other person not to take that hope away from him, because it's all he has left.

"I won't always love what I'll never have/I won't always live in my regrets" Yes, very poignant for me. I don't know how the hell I skipped over this album for so long.

Death Cab for Cutie – We Laugh Indoors Lyrics 18 years ago
One other thought I have about these lyrics are that were he says:
"I want purity, I must have it here right now
But don't you get me started now"
if we take purity as meaning virginity, or at least naivety, he could be saying that he craves a girl who has that purity, but at the same time he is telling her not to tempt him, because he knows that by being with her he would ruin that purity. Does that make sense?

Other than that I love this song so much, the repetition and the hypnotic style...the sparseness of the guitar notes...then the build-up to the heavier part and then it loops right back around, like a metaphor for releasing anger but ultimately it changes nothing. This song evokes a real feeling of powerlessness for me. Amazing.

CKY – Don't Hold Your Breath Lyrics 18 years ago
...boy, I'm such an idiot. Just got what this song is really about, and after I bitched at people for not believing Deron's literal interpretation. The man is clearly lying to protect his own vulnerability.

This is a song about alcoholism and mental instability.

The narrator is aware of his volatile mental state ("I create to destroy at hand") and feels that his life will always be like this ("tragedy haunts its prey").

I believe that the water in this song is a metaphor for alcohol. So "I'm off to the deepest depths" is about drinking, which causes the narrator to "forfeit [his] place on this land". He feels that his drinking isolates him.

The next part is about how the narrator and his wife/partner are bound together. "The tide pulls you in" is about how his mental instability binds his partner to him. "Yet you'll find yourself drifting with me."

"Don't hold your breath for long" is where the narrator is telling his partner not to expect him to change, because he cannot. The "undertow getting too strong" is the undercurrent of his alcoholism and mental health issues that lies beneath their relationship. "There's no reason for you to come along" - the narrator is giving his partner a get-out clause, saying that just because they're married, she doesn't have to put up with all of his problems. He knows that he is going to self-destruct (see first line of song) and he doesn't want to drag her down with him.

"The end of the dry lives we've lead" - dry, as in sober. He's saying that his alcoholism has got so bad that he will never be "dry" again. "You sutured my wounds when they bled" refers to their bond and how she has been there for him.

Rest is self-explanatory. This is what I think, given that when this album was written/recorded, Deron was struggling with his alcoholism. He'd never admit that it's such a personal song, but I truly believe it is, from Deron to Felissa.

Feel free to contradict me, but you won't change my mind =)

Alan Jackson – Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning) Lyrics 19 years ago
"A friend of mine in highschool had a sister who was on one of the planes that hit the towers. I dare any one of you assholes to say what you said on here to his face."

Erm...okay. Nobody on here is saying anything insulting about the victims of September 11th, or trivialising its impact. They just don't happen to agree with releasing songs about it in order to evoke emotional responses. Although the song itself may be a pile of shit, people will buy it out of sympathy for the victims, and I'm sure Alan Jackson knows this. Who knows, your friend may even feel insulted by some of the ideas put forward in this song, it's a huge generalisation of the feelings of people affected by the attacks. So your argument is irrelevant. Think before you type next time.

I really like the chorus music of this track - I'm definitely not a Slipknot fan so I wasn't expecting much from this track but it's one of my favourites. I have to say though that first when the news footage kicked in I groaned. I'm personally sick of musicians mouthing off about Bush and Iraq. It's all just opinions and we all have them - the only difference is that they get to record and sell theirs. Aside from that I do like this song a lot.

This is one of my favourites on the album...they really chose an amazing pairing of musician and vocalist here. Lyrically it reminds me of songs on Opeth's 'Damnation' - themes of loss and journeys seem to be something that Mikael Akerfeldt comes back to in his writing. I really love the second verse but I haven't figured out exactly what I think it means yet.

CKY – Tripled Manic State Lyrics 20 years ago
This is one of the best songs on the album, if not the best. The lyrics interest me 'cause they kinda relate to one of Deron's self-confessed biggest fears of waking up one day and not being able to move, being trapped inside his own body. Although it's still a sci-fi fictional song, I think it's cool that there's a little more reality behind some of the lyrics on this album. Plus the verse riffs are fucking sick.

HIM – Face of God Lyrics 20 years ago
I have a loose interpretation of this song to share, I wonder if anybody agrees with me. My friend and I have discussed this; she's currently studying witchcraft (the real thing, not some fad) and reckons a lot of this album can be related to some ideas in that. Basically:

The idea is that although often love is viewed as selflessness, in reality it causes one to become more selfish and less spiritual. As though romantic love is a false idol, in a sense. So in this song "I'd kill to share your pain and sell my soul for you just to say" demonstrates how the speaker is willing to do amoral things purely for love, and the idea of selling his soul shows how little spirituality there really is in love. Likewise, "Love's our shadow on the wall with the face of God", I think represents how although the couple believe their love to be equal to a religion or spirituality, in actuality it is merely a shadow. It has the face of God for this reason: they view it as a religion and in doing so actually are neglecting real spirituality and morality.

Just so ya know, personally I'm agnostic but I think a lot of the album has some love versus spirituality themes in it. All very interesting. I'd love to hear Valo's inspiration to see how far off the mark I am!

According to Deron it's not metaphorical, I have no problem with people thinking it is but please don't state it as fact, kthx. If it *were* metaphorical, I'd see it along the lines of a suicide pact in general, with one of the people having second thoughts.

CKY – Suddenly Tragic Lyrics 20 years ago
Personally I can't get Deron's meaning from the lyrics at all, they're just not detailed enough to have that complex of a narrative. So for me, it's definitely anti-suicide, saying that instead you should look for answers and don't listen to the ridicule etc. etc. Kinda conflicts with what I consider to be the almost pro-suicide lyrics of 'Don't Hold Your Breath'.

I love this song, it's such a fantastic riff, I could listen to it all day.

Coldplay – What If Lyrics 20 years ago
I have to say, I've never liked Coldplay. I used to sneer at a friend of mine for liking what I considered to be whiny indie crap. But this new album (or the first half of it anyway) is fantastic. The sentiment of this song (or what I got out of it) is something I really needed to hear today - "How can you know it when you don't even try?" It's like okay, so maybe you'll take a chance and it won't pay off, maybe you'll go through a shitty time, but you won't know for sure if you don't try. Living life in fear of what might go wrong is a terrible, pointless existence. "It's a chance that you take." =)

Wow, I don't own any Green Day albums but this is my favourite single from the new album...I seriously didn't expect the lyrics to be this good, though. Three Days Grace – Wake Up Lyrics 20 years ago
The abusive relationship thing works, but when I first heard this song I assumed that the other person was more in the wrong just because if he'd trying to win them back he's not doing a very convincing job of it. "Where the hell are you when I need you?" sounds too angry and rude to be much of an attempt at making amends. Then there's "You bring me down, at least you try" and "I don't want you" that make it seem not so one-sided.

The anger and grown-up angst in this band's lyrics amuses me a lot of the time, but that said I love this song right now, and all the music on the album is great.

Soil – Unreal Lyrics 20 years ago
I can't here him saying 'with' in the chorus at all, just "You fucked me", but I'll trust you guys because you know better than I do. It could work either way though.

I reckon the 'garden' is like a garden of Eden metaphor. Lots of religious imagery in Soil lyrics, although he's not necessarily singing about religion, although that said I think this one could be about someone's lack of faith in God. It's mainly the 'burned my hands on what was missing' and 'there's a spot of light in me' lines that make me think that.

This is my favourite song on the album by far.

HIM – Join Me In Death Lyrics 20 years ago
I gotta say...all the people that get so worked up about HIM being shit, just don't get it. I like HIM but for God's sakes, I don't take them utterly seriously. How could you? I think Valo knows that the band are as far from being metal or goth as anything else, and I think that some of his lyrics are really tongue-in-cheek because they're so bad they couldn't possibly be serious. Look at 'The Funeral of Hearts'.

And the whole 'Love Metal' thing? I am so sick of guys bitching about how gay the band is and how shit that title is because hello, it's a JOKE. Please credit Valo with one shred of intelligence. Ever notice how he gives a different answer to most questions in every interview? The man knows how to play to his audience. 'Love Metal' is primarily a reference to the "oh baby" style lyrics of the '70s-'80s original metal. The fact that people seriously think the band would describe their sound like that is laughable.

So haters and fanatics alike, get a sense of humour already and do some research.

The 69 Eyes – Brandon Lee Lyrics 20 years ago
Does no one else think that maybe The 69 Eyes are totally taking the piss out of the whole goth thing? I mean, this song doesn't even have anything to do with Brandon Lee apart from mentioning his name, and everyone knows that to be a 'real goth' you have to have seen The Crow 34599 times, so I reckon it's a totally tongue-in-cheek title, as you'd expect all goths to buy it. And look at the lyrics: "Victims, aren't we all?" is just so sarcastic, like why is everyone so melodramatic? "Just like the moon does, we rise and shine and fall" just makes me laugh every time because really, it sounds so stupid.

Look at the lyrics to 'Gothic Girl' as well. I'm thinking that they're either a completely knowing parody of goth, or Jyrki just has *really* bad English.

"this is not a good cover, call me old fashioned, but a cover is supposed to be as close as possible to the original, a tribute to the original artist, to change his work would be an insult, thats one man's oppinion anyway"

Oh, and I completely agree with Waves Of Delusion that the above is a ridiculous comment to make. What would be the point of covering a song if you tried to make it the same as the original? Somebody trying to faithfully cover a band is never going to be as good as the original, and it will just be boring. I love covers that throw a completely different light onto a song. I will be downloading this to hear how different it is and see if I like it any more than the original. I think the point of a cover is to adopt a song into your or your band's own style. I personally love Type O Negative and HIM covers for this reason.

Those lines to me change the entire meaning of the song so that it seems more like at night time, he can forget all of his sins and pretend that everything is right with the world. The line "know my deliverance will come soon" ties in with this, in my opinion.

The heroin interpretation behind 'injection' and 'drug' is almost too obvious for me. I like more subtlety in my lyrics. This could also be about a relationship or anything else, really.
