| Wilco – Handshake Drugs Lyrics

I think Chuck Klosterman's Spin piece around the release of A Ghost is Born gives a pretty good idea of what Tweedy was feeling when he wrote this song. I'm not exactly sure if the rehab stint mentioned was before or after the song's recording. In any event, apparently Tweedy had been on painkillers to treat migraines, all the while he was taking anti-depressants. When he tried to kick the painkillers, he resorted to other opiates, the handshake drugs of the song's title. When he crashed and went to rehab, the doctors had to treat both illnesses: addiction and mental illness. Both afflictions that can make you feel unlike yourself. Just the send of an idea, I try not to make too much of Tweedy's lyrics--just enjoy them and think about perspective. |

It's all about imperialism, racial hegemony and false prophets. By the way, Phish lived on King Street in Burlington and was across from the Wilson Hotel. |

Wrong, Harry Hood is Hood Dairies' mascot. The Harry Hood sign was neon and would shut off at night. Thus the lyric, "Where do you go when the lights go out?" You can feel good about Hood is the company's slogan. |

| Grateful Dead – Touch Of Grey Lyrics

The other day I was happily surprised at hearing "Touch of Grey" playing on a local (New York) radio station. The disc jockey Ken Dashow commented that Jerry wrote this song fifteen years ago, yet it could have been written yesterday. In these crazy, mixed-up, depressing times, it is important to persevere and keep your head up. With all of the confusion and chaos, the song is Jerry's call to just chill out and ride the shit wave onto shore. With all we are told to worry about, the song reveals that life owes itself to the contradictory nature of the human condition. There's no way to break life down to a science; it attests to the duality of life. But who knows? The song is amazing and even before thinking about its meaning, I loved it. "Touch of Grey" is the song which introduced me to the Dead when I was six years old but only started listening intently a few years ago. Dead music certainly matures as you age. |
