i think this song is saying that this guy has a feeling that only he knows how it feels and other people are trying to tell him what it is like and he is saying that it is not possible for them to know or understand. He is saying to them that they try to pretend to make this feeling of his but he doesnt want them too because it is his alone. This is a great song. Sorry if i am wrong, but thats just what i thought. |

I think everyone has said some really good stuff about this song. I definitely think it has to do with the music industry and there control over the musicians but i also think it is talking about the world as a whole. People are controlled by the way society wants them to act. The song is saying "we know where youve been" and "we know what you've dreamed" because thats where they told them to go and thats what they told them to dream. Its a great song with alot of meaning to it. People should take this song to heart and realize that we need to not let our lives be ruined. Be yourself. And i really dont think this song is about machines in reality, that was all a metaphor. |

newfoundfinch: im sorry to also say something about your comment but i have to. i think it is completely ridiculous to purposefully get onto a Phish lyrics page and make a rude comment about the people who enjoy this type of music. Although the same people may not listen to new found glory or finch doesnt mean that either of you have chose a bad type of music. I know many people like you who think the same way and although you say that "hippies" are stereotyped, you yourself are also a stereotype. Typical punk type guy who wants to be independent and an individual hating those people who wear Abercrombie and American Eagle and listen to music such as Phish, Dave Matthews Band, and other bands. That is what you think right? see it is easy to stereotype. if you yourself dont want to be stereotyped then dont bother doing it to someone else. And like other people have said, i dont care if im taking time to write this. I think that people need to realize that the world does not revolve around their type of music. The world is a very diverse place and everyone needs to deal with it and live together as one. (hows that for a stereotypical hippie line?) have a nice day. this song is great. |

this song is awesome. i think its great. you could definitely change the meaning to fit what you want it to mean....just as you could with any song. personally i think this song is about smoking weed but it is also saying that he doesnt care if people dont approve of it. it is saying to live life how you want to live it and have a great time while you live. please stop arguing over song meanings- different people have different opinions. |

This song is awesome. I think its so amazing that Dave can just sit down and write lyrics like these that have so much meaning to them. He is so right; there is "no way out of life." You have to face each and every day and just be yourdelf. You cannot run from your problems to try to make things better; it will only become worse. |
