The way I think of it is that this guy met a girl who deals with a lot of problems in her life. She is closed off but he wants to figure her out or wants to understand her. When it says "she lead him upstairs she lead him upstairs left him dying to get in" its talking about how she is bit by bit opening up to him and he wants to understand or know more and he falls in love with her and she might think that she isn't good enough or she doesn't deserve him or to live. And sadly she commits suicide on Sunday and he is looking for her trying to find her even though he knows that she did die but it's more like mentally looking for her. Trying to figure why she did it still desperately trying to understand. Like in the line "the neighbors said she moved away, funny how it rained all day" it's saying that either the neighbors don't know what happened or don't want to tel him what really happened or maybe it was the excuse that her family was saying. And how it rained all day say how it could of been how he felt so sad and he finally realizes that she is gone and he finally gets himself to come back to reality saying "I guess I'll go home now" he goes back home finally understanding that he will still love her even though she isn't coming back. And to me the end ties in with the beginning of you think about it. The song his a whole flashback remembering what happened Sunday. In the lyrics "he woke up from dreaming and put on his shoes started making his way past two in the morning he hasn't been sober for days. Leaning now into the breeze remembering Sunday he falls to his knees" this is saying that he is trying to keep going to keep moving on without her and its hard by him drinking and not being sober so he doesn't think of her. And when it says he wakes up from dreaming about her. He can't seem to get the idea that she is gone and falling to his knees and crying he rememebers Sunday he day his love died. |

In my opinion, of course this song wanna tell us to not give up on what we fight for. the singer encourage themselves to break all the obstacles in their journey. Deeper than that, I think it's about how we look at this world, the world we live in. Everyone in this world has their dreams and what they want to do and achieve, but sometimes we just think that the life never gonna change no matter what we do. We think this world and everything in it is so bad. The world has been broken, no matter what we do. We stop to pursue our dreams and purposes. But if we watch the music video, Coldplay give us a new perspective of this world. This world isn't as awful as we thought. This world and every human-race activity that happen in it is so beautiful just the way it is. This definitely has everything to do with mental illness. Take it from someone whose taken so much verbal and emotional abuse as a kid and then years later, diagnosed with severe anxiety. It almost to the point where I feel like im going crazy or in this instance, turning into a "monster" something other than myself. Anxiety is no joke and people who take it lightly or as someone's is just paranoid or worried, that they need to calm down, no.. It goes deeper than that. Extremely deep. I get so frustrated with my anxiety and I feel as if its taken over everything in my life. Makes me hesitant to do alot of things and tasks, that a "normal" person would see as "not a big deal." Finding someone to accept you for a mental illness (anxiety) can be beyond challenging. |

This song is a beautiful commemoration of thoughts and feelings one experiences after a fight with the one they love. "In this old house I'm not alone" signifies that they have been here many times before in arguments. Often times, it does feel like an old home when you see your relationship crumble. At one point, home may have been a lively place with that person, but now it is growing old and tiresome. continuing with "In a bedroom, a telephone you made the call, and I just stood by" essentialy one person made a defining call while the other person may or may not have been ready to hear that call made out loud. Or an executive decision was made and while the other person feels the same, they werent ready to admit it. "I stripped the sheets and emptied out the sty" post "making the call" the person rid themselves of the burden weighing on them "the crowds they light the carnival, calling us home and all we want's another voice to leave us along" The rush of emotions tugs at the person to stay in the relationship even though they know the situation isnt going to change. At this time, my interpretation of the song lyrics of Oliver James is that my family will find our missing black and white boxer dog whom I lost on a noon hike on New Year's Eve in Nashville TN. I was babysitting Oliver James for my son, Hayes who was on vacation in Florida with his girlfriend and friends. Oliver bolted after a squirrel in west Nashville, near Hillsboro Village and we've been searching for him in the rain, sleet, snow and sunshine. Our Oliver James was named after this song by Fleet Foxes. This was his lullaby song at my house (his grandmother here - Bree) as he would go to sleep without his Dad (my son, Oliver's owner/master). I was a junior high school student at that time I was listening this song, my uncle gave me his dylan mp3 collection. This song was the one I loved, I played it a lot of times. Then, the days after I couldn't find this song anymore. I forgot which song was it, that's hundreds so g of dylan. And I'd been forgeting this song day by day. Then, after college, I start to listened a lot of Dylan's songs, yet, I never found this song that I don't know the title. Then, I've been starting to collect all of Dylan's songs. Accidentally, I played a song from those collections, after a seconds this song is played, I remembered that it is the song. The whole album is filled with little cues, if read any of the press stuff from homme at the time, His battles and falling out with Olivieri. Man when those guys where young they were serious coke heads and Olivieri had a bad meth/speed anything he could get his hands on addiction. They have a ton of songs about drug abuse. Mark Lanegan is always a co writer on the songs and he himself is an original seattle grunge era singer from the screaming trees. He is a hardcore Junk head. Watch him live he always wears a beanie and dark sunnies. When Kurt Cobain died apparently everyone initially thought it was Lanegan or Layne Staley who had died... the other two are now dead and Lanegan would be the longest surviving reccurring addict still living from that original seattle sound era. Listen to "the fade" "monsters in the parasol" "sky is fallin" "leg of lamb" - to a lesser extent "Auto pilot" ( that whole song is about shooting coke with a new friend then not liking seeing that friend doing it )... the list goes on and on and on they have so many references to drug addiction it aint funny. As far as song for the deaf though.. there are a few clues. a canary in a gilded cage is refferring to being trapped inside addiction - the drugs are great but its a prison - albeit a beautiful prison or gilded cage. Nobody's comin down the hall - is a reference to paranoia just like in ode to clariisa ("you know why they call and just let it ring" - also from ode to clarissa "tastes so good - lo and i knew it would" is a pretty blunt reference to the taste you get in the back of your throat when you shoot hard drugs in your arm) "broken reflection have a look" is refferring to the state he is in. "nobody ever needed it" is stating the obvious that even though addicts say they NEED it - nobody really does. "beautiful senses are gone" is the trade off for drug dependancy - as you experience the heightened feelings of drug use you lose the basic feelings of happiness, surprise and a bunch of other simple and beautiful emotions. the chorus is him realising what he has lost " I got what was" and wanting to move forward and save what is left. " I saw you coming and I heard not a thing" is reffering to his own blindness with his problems till they are out of control. "My mistake not to listen when i knew where you'd been" is not listening to perhaps the counsel of someone who is a reformed addict warning ofd the dangers who had been there already. the interlude "halo round my neck has torn out every stitch" is meaning that trying to stay sober and the battle for sobriety and continually relapsing is an open wound and the halo rpresents the battle and the stitches are the attempts to get clean, tearing the stitches is falling into old behaviours. " no talk will cure whats lost or save whats left for the deaf" is his own experience as a reformed addict warning someone else who like himself does not heed the council (possibly nick olivieri - which is why homme tossed him out shortly after this - he was quoted as saying that Olivieri's destructive behaviour was fun when they were young but had gotten old recently - what exactly is that destructive behaviour? you don't have to be a genius to figure it out) |

"My mistake not to listen when i knew where you'd been" is not listening to perhaps the counsel of someone who is a reformed addict warning ofd the dangers who had been there already. the interlude "halo round my neck has torn out every stitch" is meaning that trying to stay sober and the battle for sobriety and continually relapsing is an open wound and the halo rpresents the battle and the stitches are the attempts to get clean, tearing the stitches is falling into old behaviours. " no talk will cure whats lost or save whats left for the deaf" is his own experience as a reformed addict warning someone else who like himself does not heed the council (possibly nick olivieri - which is why homme tossed him out shortly after this - he was quoted as saying that Olivieri's destructive behaviour was fun when they were young but had gotten old recently - what exactly is that destructive behaviour? you don't have to be a genius to figure it out) |
