Arcade Fire – Wake Up Lyrics 21 years ago
Oh man does this song rock live. Utterly incredible. After they finished playing it, someone in the audience shouted out, "Play it again, seriously!!!" My thoughts exactly.

I read on a Morrissey website that the lyrics were influenced by a movie with a similar theme. Don't remember much more though.

Arcade Fire – Crown of Love Lyrics 21 years ago
Very emotional and interesting lyrics like the rest of their songs. This one actually reminded me of Ocean Rain by Echo and the Bunnymen. That line "Screamin' from beneath the waves."

Different perspective here: Maybe the indiference isn't his but hers. The crown and spark are no longer within him because he is unable to shake her indifference towards him. And he's impotent to change her heart. Crowns are usually bestowed upon others (her love upon him) and sparks are exciting reactions that happen when two things contact each other unexpectedly. These things are gone so the pain is growing within him at the recollection of their former happiness:

"The pains of love, and they keep growin',
in my heart there's flowers growin'
on the grave of our old love,
since you gave me a straight answer. "

Her 'straight answer' buried their love.

Then there is the "before my mom walked in my bedroom'" line that shows up twice. This seems to be a sort of reference to the secret lives of boys (as in the third harry potter movie). *Wink wink* But I imagine that the idea here is that he is thinking these things in his room just before his mother walks in and he pretends not to be emotional or in the middle of deep and painful thought. Hiding it just like most boys hide weakness (Boys don't Cry).

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) Lyrics 21 years ago
Wow, that's weird. Your comment starts the same as pitchforkmedia's review: http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/a/arcade-fire/funeral.shtml

Is the line from something in the album or is it just an allusion to the Talking Heads song "Once in a lifetime"?

Hearing the Arcade Fire is like seeing a beautiful Montreal chick who you wouldn't expect to be into Talking Heads but knows more about them than you do. Bad similie. Sorry!

"You may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile. And you may ask yourself, 'How did I get here?''?

The White Stripes – Your Southern Can Is Mine Lyrics 21 years ago
Jack is totally about that 'old fashioned' kinda love--call it misogynistic, violent, or whatever.

I'm just kidding, geez!

Hedwig and the Angry Inch – The Long Grift Lyrics 21 years ago
Also remember that in the play Tommy sings something along the lines of "look what you've done, you've made me whole" during the scene where Hedwig is explaining her idea of love.

So the darker version played later (with the above lyrics) is an inversion of the original emotion of the song which helps make the lyrics even more bittersweet.

Franz Ferdinand – This Fire Lyrics 21 years ago
The music video for this song is the greatest thing I've ever seen.

At least now I don't have to go through the efforts of becoming a brilliant indie rockstar so that I could make this video. Franz Ferdinand has already done it for me.

Franz Ferdinand – The Dark of the Matinee Lyrics 21 years ago
from pitchforkmedia.com:
"On the upcoming single, "Dark of the Matinee", Alexander Kapranos positions himself as a bitter cynic who eventually gives in to fame (though it may be, as the title suggests, in the dimmer regions of the spotlight) after being charmed by an attractive optimist, and, one would imagine, the unapologetic funk of the track itself. By the last verse, Kapranos imagines himself smiling wide, sitting with Abba-loving AM talk show host Terry Wogan. With their meteoric rise, Franz Ferdinand could very well be within a year of it. They're poised to be the next Duran Duran or the next Pulp. Or they could be the next Menswear. In any case, it will be a spectacle."

Franz Ferdinand – Michael Lyrics 21 years ago
I got to personally meet Alex and the rest of the band after seeing them ROCK Chapel Hill and I can certainly say I questioned my sexuality for a bit.

Yay for the few intelligent posts on here. Mine NOT included, I just wanted to brag about meeting them and seeing them live.

Thank God there are still bands more intelligent than the people they perform for.

Echo and the Bunnymen – Silver Lyrics 22 years ago
Perhaps one my favorite songs for lifting my spirits and facing the world's insurmountable odds! I won't express reservation at being the first to post like so many others have--rather I see it as an opportunity. It seems often the first post determines the flow of the entire thread so I'll do my best to handle the responsibility ;-)
So....'Silver':
Is it celebrating the experience of emotional and individual triumph? "Walked on a tidal wave, laughed in the face of a brand new day" is a very triumphant, grandiose expression of the 'light-footed dance' with which Nietzsche advised we should approach life. Man as his own savior, a god tamer, using ideas and beliefs only as they benefit him is also very Nietzschean (the lyrics should say 'god tamers' not 'go tamers' or 'god tame us' as I've seen elsewhere). The feeling of inner-restraint has itself been contained (imprisoned jailers) as we move forward in discovery not knowing what we will find (blind sailors).

Ah, but what of friendship or love? Perhaps 'Silver' also expresses that rare moment when someone outside ourself can free (my hands untied) and seemingly redeem us so that we can see 'a world that's true through our clean eyes.' 'Burning lips' gives the image of a visible passion eager to be shared. A person who is 'living proof', a manifestation of the individual hope that we now hope to share. 'Just look at you', your passion is proof that it is ok for me to feel triumphant. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said that love is "looking outward in the same direction." Or is it not another person at all but two aspects of the self? Or is it Mr. God that is freeing him and allowing him flowing passion? Ah, or is Ian speaking so highly of his fans and admirers from whom perhaps he derives personal energy?

Yet still young Ian had the courage to admit the fleeting characteristic of such feelings, 'just in case it slips away', since his proof is still only at his fingertips, not in our full grasp. Hence you must be 'well behaved' and not hold unteemable ideals and expectations that could compromise yourself.

Likewise, I will share the spirit of this song and Ian's good example since the truth may always be 'just a touch away'. The whole idea of songmeanings.net is for its users to project their personal experiences and ideas onto a set of song lyrics for a sort of 'social' communion. Not many users have 'real' knowledge of the songs in which case (can) allow for a pleasurable intellectual flexibility and interesting thoughts to arise. Me being an Amercian (from the South no less), the bunnymen's Britishisms and fantastical wordplay often escape my rational compreshension but unceasingly add color, energy, imagination, atmosphere, and spirit to my experience of their music. Concious understanding is not a prerequisite for enjoyment--all great things are already written on the soul waiting to be discovered.
