I had this song in my head when i did a presentation at university, with one hand high i showed them our progress, i took my time, but no one cared. It kinda occured to me that this song is about seeing that you need to change but being unable to do it without making drastic changes to your life, and saying goodbye to some really wonderful things. |

Big moons probably has something to do with tides, as the moon controls the tides - so either pulling them away from the beach or back to the beach.
to me this song is not about all the new kids, but maybe a message to the older scene, the kids that think they are cooler than the new kids, the kids who would have known about fall out boy years ago. The kids i know who have been emo for years all hate FOB, "we never stood a chance" is so fitting for being written off by the scene without even hearing the band. This fits with the tides/ghost town, that maybe FOB just want to be accepted by the old school kids, they want to get back to them (the shore) and connect to them even if it is like a ghost town now.
I know that it makes sense to me. I've been into "emo" for years and i feel like i can't tell my friends that i like FOB cos i'll get looked down on. It is something i have obsessed over. so stupid.

This song is so so pretty. Both versions make me so equally happy. The trumpet in the live version is so wonderful, i have never heard prettier trumpet. Learning to clap in time with the britt daniel version made me want to dance in all the wrong places.
I have always thought Conor was taking on a persona in this song, either singing about himself or about someone else singing about themselves - if that makes any sense. |

I don't know if i 100% agree with your police work there queenofquiet.
For me the first verse is focused on her love - that slain is a good word here, the person has killed her with love and that she hopes to be scooped up and thrown inside of the love. The black tattoos are a sign that she does not want the love to fail.
I'm not sure about the second verse, it sounds a little like she is returning to his home as a homing pigeon but i'm not certain. |

Did you ever think that "he takes and he takes and he takes" could all be taking different things?
Through countless discussions about this song I have come to feel that He took my shoulders and he shook my face is God coming to him after losing this person he loves and letting him know that he is still there, that He takes - the friend, He takes - joy and he takes the pain of it all, that the Narrators burdens are lifted at the end.
It seems to go full circle through doubt for me. It covers it all.
And, other honest Christian song writers: any one heard Pedro the Lion? especially the old stuff. I feel that The Secret of the Easy Yoke deals with the same sort of issues (of doubt, of distance from God) in an equally beautiful way. |

Most Bitter Song Ever. I love it! so much!
To me, it's all about someone leaving you, and gettin angry about it and then realizing that hey! she/he's not all that! and i'm so much better without her/him.
I think the eating references are about being friends with someone and them being concerned about you, so that you eat to keep them happy, and now that she is gone and he's realized she is terrible, he is just eating for himself. he has his appetite back cos all of the anger at her is gone.
also. this needs to be said: that basketball analogy = best analogy ever. My friends have laughed so hard at how good it is! so so good. |

I've been a Bright Eyes fan for a while now, and i have to admit i am not the hugest fan of this song.
I saw it live when he played in Brisbane, and was somewhat glad that he did not play it in Sydney.
I don't like the song because it so obviously pushes a belief that is, or should be that made intirely by the artist. I think the problem comes when so many kids love this guy, and if they don't have an already informed oppinion of where they stand politically then this could make their mind up for them.
Don't get me wrong, i agree with most things that are sung about here, It's just the issue of control.
It is part of the right of an artist to say what they want, if art as a whole is not political than it is worthless. But it's also the role of a human to desire the best for everyone... Maybe this is what he's doing? if he honestly believes that America will be better off under a different president and this helps acheive his goals, then i guess it's fine.
And it's been said, I know, Conor does not have the best voice, but he's called attention to it many times. And sometimes i think that you have to sing, i don't have to sing but some days i need to. |

I could say that emo is nothing like this and that it is short for emotional hard core and is a genre totally different to Pedro but then i would be tainting this beauty with something that is not so pure.
I think this song is beautiful whether some guy says that emo started in the mid west and other people say this is the deffinition of emo and i don't believe it is at all. The song shuldn't need arguments surrounding it. |

This song is great cos i just don't care about anything anymore. I kinda feel like i've reached that place where i can shave when i want to, and not feel guilty, because it's only every two weeks or so - i kinda feel like if i didn't shave at all then i would become obsessed with the fact that i wasn't shaving and then that would rule me just as much as shaving would in the first place, but for a whole other set of reasons.
