The Strokes – Trying Your Luck Lyrics 22 years ago
this is my favorite strokes song.
the second the song starts, the guitar makes me feel sad yet hopefully happy at the same moment. (depressing and happy like a david lynch film)
the bass during the chorus is hot as hell too.
Even though I love their whole album I always wait for this song to come on. It chills me out and gives me goosebumps. (not from fear, but from like when you're excited)

The Strokes – Sagganuts Lyrics 22 years ago
somehow I'm pretty sure sagganuts isn't the name of the song.
people are fucking sloppy as hell with their kazaa and whatnot and always mistitling things.

even though the recording is low quality because its live, this song is amazing.
I was in love woth the chorus before it existed.

their lyrics match the tone of their music way too well.

The Faint – Casual Sex Lyrics 22 years ago
As it may seem to be about kinkyness at first, I now totally believe this song is about the narrator's urge for casual sex being suppressed by religion.
When asking if casual sex is irrational, he is told yes.
The feeling of sex is nothing possible, perhaps because there is no way the narrator will ever be able to hit up a nun. (thats way too sinful)

"they're into robes and gloves, goblet glass and crosses."
they're religious folk, he'll never get any with them.

"the sound of her voice, and the handle of the robe are getting thinner as the whip begins to speak"

the beautiful attributes of this lady are disappearing (getting thinner), because the whip (religion), is telling him that these desires are wrong.

"the nun just strikes a pose. the soldier's helmet hits the floor. he's walking backward until he's pinned against stained glass."

the narrator is taken back by this ladies beauty, but he can't escape the boundaries of church rule. (stained glass=thwe windows in church.)

on a completely different note, I saw the faint in Philly last night, it was fucking amazing!!!!!!
:mosh:

They Might Be Giants – Someone Keeps Moving My Chair Lyrics 22 years ago
this is a creepy and fun song at the same time.
all these odd/disturbing things seem to surround him yet all he can complain about is that somebody keeps moving his chair.

disturbing... i wonder if his friend's death was accidental, or if it was caused by the ugliness men.
something was spilt upon his brain... wouldn't his skull have to be open? maybe this song is about being sedated during an operation of the head.
ah its hard to tell, the lyrics are nicely vague.

They Might Be Giants – I Palindrome I Lyrics 22 years ago
i highly diasgree with kenba!!
if you listen only a small collections of songs you won't notice any deeper meanings. man -o-nam is a bit far off,(its just a letter palidrome) but yes this song is about a son waiting for his mom to die.
check out some other songs like the end of the tour for example. its about killing somebody in a car accident, birds fly is about getting arrested for comitting a crime, s-e-x-x-y is either about transvestitism or a chromosone disorder, they'll need a crane is about ending a relationship ruined in part by alcohol.

thats why i love tmbg so much. their music is great, they're funny people, and they can so casualy throw in songs with hard to notice story lines.

They Might Be Giants – The End Of The Tour Lyrics 22 years ago
"I was bent metal you were a flaming wreck when we kissed at the overpasss
I was sailing along with the people driving themselves to distraction inside me
then came a knock on the door
which was odd
and the picture abruptly changed"

sooooooooooooo good!
the end of the tour is the end of this girls life. she gets killed when the narrator (john l.) crashes into her on the highway.

They Might Be Giants – Don't Let's Start Lyrics 22 years ago
i love they might be giants!!!
this is an example of how behind their humor and playful music they can write songs with sad story lines, and have the listener not even realize it...and the music is rockin' too!

"it's about a guy who has this girlfriend that keeps cheating on him and he has a weak heart, so he keeps going back to her, even though she keeps running away. "
yeah, couldn't have summerized it better.
this reminds me of "end of the tour",
a super sad song of theirs, which story is well hidden to the casual listener.

They Might Be Giants – Birds Fly Lyrics 22 years ago
ah, i forgot:
"words fall out from my pockets"
either a cat caught this man's tongue, or more likely, he rambles randomly with poor excuses and alibies under the police investigation.
the cats dancing under his feet may be the police questioning him or investigating the situation in depth. (police man's act to investigate = cat's act of being curious)
"this colorful spell under which I live
protects me from all i write."
its fitting that this is in the same verse as "words fall out of my pockets". perhaps the narrator realizes his mistakes of saying too much and now he is using the colorful spell which protects him- the fifth amendmen.

They Might Be Giants – Birds Fly Lyrics 22 years ago
hmm. I believe this oldie is about getting busted.
i'm not sure what the "good luck charm" is, perhaps it is refering to handcuffs hanging from the narrator's wrist.
we will never know the reason why this person got arrested, but the use of forensics got him busted for something. -"And the microscope reveals the scope
Of my very best intentions (best intentions)".

The event of a bird flying into somebody's windshield is a sad yet often unavoidable situation. perhaps the narrator felt that he could not avoid doing this, and the thoughts falling from his thoughts means that he had no idea what he was thinking when he did this.
the tiny lights could be flashlights or interrogation lights shining directly upon this man's face, for he is in police custody.

They Might Be Giants – Destination Moon Lyrics 22 years ago
oh i forget to mention that at the end of the destination moon series, the rocket, upon returning, has run out of sufficient oxygen due to various reasons. everybody on the rocket is passes out and has to be brought out on stretchers...
this fits the ending verse well, where it turns around telling that the person on the rocket is returning home, but getting bruised and battered on the way back... just like tintin ;)

They Might Be Giants – Destination Moon Lyrics 22 years ago
is this a loose connection to the tintin comic with the exact same name of "destination moon"?
the whole card with the cartoon nurse/ room cleaner with the secret telegram show no parallels to the comic, however the "room"
:Dont bother to call this room
theres nobody here who can pick up
or has stuff they need to talk about and who won't be gone checking out or flying
, the room is a hospital room and this totally fits a scene in the comic. a spy shoots at tintins head, only grazing the skull ever so slightly. tintin is placed in a hospital room and he can't "be gone checking out or flying" until his head heals. his trip to the moon is delayed.
damn. tmbg and tintin are both very awesome.

They Might Be Giants – (Untitled) Lyrics 22 years ago
hahahah soooooo funny.
i can't believe they got such wacky messages left on their dial-a-song machine.

note: before john and john hit it big they only advertised the dial-a-song in the personal ads of the village voice... it was cheaper than posting it in the business section. it was titled only as tmbg dial-a-song, and when they were questioned about the ad being a business ad, john f. would reply,"hey this is my very personal shtick, don't embaress me."

this song is awesome. synth rock is awesome.
the lyrics are pretty straight forward in this tune, but it still fucking rules.

i'm a big fan of the vocoder/vocal duet in the last chorus, yeah.

... by the way, the first twenty seconds only make the song more thrilling! how could a faint listener not appreciate the sound of analog synths + drums doing their more intense stuff?... oh well. :)
