I always saw this song as describing a woman escaping an abusive relationship, very similar to Martina McBride's "Independence Day"
Both songs are very powerful and filled with vivid imagry |

Excellent song, rich with metaphor and artistry. Sting melds culture, history, religion, and his wry wit in this song about forbidden love and personal weakness. |

This song demonstrates what truly takes Sarah from the level of artist to Goddess. She paints vivid images with multi-layered, metaphorical lyrics and then performs them with infusions of pure emotion. Her music involves the listener in breath-taking journeys of intimacy and passion. |

This is a haunting, epic, aching song with expressive instrumentals. The meaning of the lyrics is obvious but the true highlight of this song is the powerful emotion poured into the music. |

This is an incredible song about feeling overwhelmed by all the suffering in the world and being unable to help as much as she'd like. The video for this song is excellent. Instead of making a traditional video she spent only a few dollars on the actual video and donated the rest to world charities. The video can be viewed here: http://www.worldonfire.ca/ |

| Melissa Etheridge – Scarecrow Lyrics

|
Melissa wrote this song in honor of Matthew Shepard, who was brutally tortured and murdered in 1998 for being homosexual. The scarecrow reference refers to the fact that the people who found him first assumed his broken body to be that of a scarecrow. May Matthew's memory live on and help to foster acceptance and understanding in the future. |
