Yeah, the bashing of Emmylou Harris was really lame. Especially whoever referred to her as "the woman doing the back up vocals." You obviously don't know shit about her. I have a question. "True Blue" is a reference to folk music, in general. It's all derived from "the blues," which was originally sang out of complete sadness, desparity, etc. I dont know if the song's about the nephew or not, but its a nice thought. |

I don't see any reference to coke or drugs. He's never that subtle about it, you know? If it was coke, or some drug, he would say so, like in Road To Joy - "i have my drugs, i have my woman, to keep away my lonliness" He's not afraid to blatently admit what it is, so why would he hide it? I think the substance here is actually alcohol. He's been writing about alcohol since his first recordings. the opening line "I know that it is freezing, but I think we have to walk." You don't walk home from doing coke, right? But you walk home from a bar. and naturally, you're drunk, so you try to wave down a taxi since you can't drive yourself home. Its the classic alcoholics thing to do. I think the song itseelf also has to do with the big city feeling, and lonliness and all that, also. Which constitutes to the second verse. Then the famous "keep going tot he bathroom" line that seems to cause the most controversy on here. Its easily alcohol. If you're a drinker, you know how it goes. You can't always just bust out a flask at dinner, or order something hard, you know. Sometimes the environment you're in, or the people you're around would just become too awkward. So you go to the bathroom and chug 'till your stomach burns. And ofcourse, later on, the reference to "flask inside my pocket." And again, the lonliness, which is temporarily numbed with this 'girl for the night' and alcohol. what a lush. |

haha, that's cool. Do you know anyting about when after they broke, john's mom saying something like "you should start a band with your sister... she's a much better singer" or something along those lines? I was just thinking about tbs today. And now fred (i think thats his name), the one that replaced john... and they sound a lot alike, just with less passion or what not. But can't you just sort of imagine Adam on stage, and he closes his eyes as he's singing, and blocks out the details of fred's voice, and just pretends that its john next to him, singing. It made me kind of sad |

The first verse just seems like its talking about how the two fell in love and everything was perfect. The second verse is all just how things are falling apart, but the person who wrote the song, he doesnt want to confront it. Like the whole song is this "im not happy, but i love you too much to make you sad, so im going to stay in this relationship." And as for the "i lie for only you" - its like he's saying, im lying to myself, for you; I am convincing myself that i am happy, to keep you happy. I dont know... it just seems prettier that way. Self sacrificial and all. But i really think RB interprets this song really well. |

i guess we all know what this song is about, but i wanted to give a personal experience into it. This will probably bore you, so i suggest you dont read it unless you really want to. i met a girl, Jayna. She's a very complex person. She lost her mom when she was around 11 years old. She tried to turn to her dad for emoitonal support, but her dad was already in his own depression, so he basically blew her off. She couldnt turn to her 5 siblings, because they are all older, and she had grown apart from them. So, for years, she hid her feelings, and never talked about them. She never opens up to anyone. Its truly, honest and amazing. We were talking one day about life in general, and she started to open up to me. she spoke these phrases about her emotional struggle. It was incredible, but overwhelming. And then, i swear, for a moment, right then, i sensed, or kinda of felt her struggle in a way. I couldn't take it, so i changed the subject. She never said anything about my changing the subject, but she was hurt. I failed her. she started to tell me things taht she hadnt spoke of in years, but i could only push her away. Now, she's a damaged creature because of my decision, and the fact that i wasn't strong enough to take it. I deserve to burn for that. None of this makes sense, probably, but the feeling is killing me. thanks for reading. |

friendforfebruary, i like your idea alot. but what about this: he is in love with the girl, but he sees himself as ugly, and inpure, inthe way that he is not good enough for her. thus "im sorry for the way my eyes objectify you" -- its like he's saying "im sorry that i have ever pictured myself being with you" And if you've ever felt anything liek that, you Do feel "guilty and degraded" -- because she is too good for you, but still, you continue to think about what it would be like to be with her. "find the words to right your wrongs" -- "you" is refering to himself. He wants to apologize with words, but he sees himself as worthless, so words dont seem to make up for it all "the sex that i see, it binds my heart" -- "sex" is not actually intercourse, but more of how wonderful she truly is... and obviously, it binds his heart because he can never have her its all just a thought.... but friendforfeb, that's beautiful |

i like alot of these posts and i like how someone mentioned that this song can mean different things to people. I think this song is about a family being torn apart, and its partly from the kid's point of view and partly from the parents who were inlove at one point. Let me explain. "making up for all time we lost " ----this makes me think about when the parents get divorced, and the kid loses sight of everything, and he chooses to be angry at one of the parents, and then years later, he realizes what he missed out on, and he wants to make it up to that parent "In this house of cards we're all holding hearts and spades (one breath, one step could knock it all down) but you lead with your eyes and you give it away (decide, design to cut from the clouds) And the people you love get lost in the shuffle, (When you leave, you leave nothing but broken hearts) you let it go and then you fold" ---- this is about before the parents got separated in the house, the cards being the family members, one breath, being one fight or some sort of mishap can destroy it all. the people you love get lost part is about how when there's a divorce, you dont know which side to choose, and sometimes you can end up falling apart from a parent. WHEN YOU LEAVE.. nothing but broken hearts is like when a parent leaves the other, it leaves the whole family broken hearted. "So we stay on the open road We drive for hours and still no end in sight at all Driving in your car, miss the stop sign, fall in love, just to get knocked out" ---- this brings up like a family vacation where you drive for hours, and you feel like nothing can break apart your family, or the vacation is one of the memories that made you feel liek nothing could break your family but all of those memories end up "knocking you out" "Pull your punches and burn with your cigarettes Pulled like a punch and burnt like a cigarette...forever" --- this makes me think of like "this is your last move, so think it through" like the parent is trying to decide if he/she really wants to leave or not, but in the end they decide to leave and it "pulled like a punch and burnt liek a cigareette forever"--- that shows the pain its really just a thought. but thanks for reading all that crap |
