I believe the song is about a girl who can't stop putting up a front, not allowing people to see her true self because she's so occupied with what they might think. The carry the zero line makes me think that he's trying to say that logic won't help them understand this, no matter how hard they try. | |

This song is great. I'm also confused about the subway being a porno...I love the lines "It's up to me now, turn on the bright lights." Kind of makes me feel like everything's in my hands, and it's for me to decide what will happen. I love his voice. It's so nonchalant. |

This is a pretty good song. My interpretation was that a person should not grow old wondering why things are the way they are, we should just live. I think the building nothing, laying bricks part means that people spend too much energy preparing but never really accomplishing their goals or doing something useful. "hold your glass up, hold it in never betray the way you've always known it is. one day i'll be wondering how i got so old just wondering how" I love those lines. |

This is such a nice song..I think it's about him trying to tie someone he loves to him because this person is fading or about to die, which the lines about helplessness and hospitals kind of imply. | I agree with most of what ToroTrash said about this song, but I'm not so sure that it's about a shallow model as much as it is a criticism of phoniness. He's been influenced by everyone to believe that such a superficial life is ideal, and when he does realize this is true, it's too late and he's "drunk and wearng flip-flops on Fifth Avenue." He knows now that that perfect red leather jacket, brand name sunglasses and other material sources of "happiness" aren't worth much at all in the end. | |

I think everything I've wanted to say has already been said but here I go nevertheless. To me, this is NOT a love song at all. I've always thought the fool was an actress or singer who's been taught how to be perceived as someone "admirable." She should talk about the foreign films she's watched, never misbehave, etc. She's grateful for all the fame she's been given, but what she doesn't realize is that she is really a fool. Which is fortunate for her b/c she's oblivious. They say ignorance is bliss. While waiting for a Dispatch/Jack Johnson concert to begin last year, I heard Jack rehearsing this song. I was so amazed, and from that day on, this has been one of my favorites. |

I definitely agree that I can listen to this many many times. For me, this song is about how he sees "perfect" examples of love everywhere, the same kind of couples saying "I love you" so much, that the words have lost its meaning through its repetitiviness. But either way, he still can't help giving in to love as "every night ends the same as I'm collapsing once more by your side." |

The sadness of the song can be felt when he's singing "crashing through the parlor doors, what was your first reaction? screaming, drunk, disorderly: i'll tell you mine. you were the one but i can't spit it out when the date's been set. the white routine to be ingested inaccurately." The music at that moment is perfectly coordinated with the words. One of my favorite death cab songs. |
