This one is very straightforward but if you don't know Michael's life story I hope this helps you out. He is just a man and can only do so much to change what's around him. When he sets a goal, makes a plan he uses his will power to ignore personal problems (temporarily) and focuses on achieving the plan. This perhaps delays the mending of relationships in his family but it's still important to him and something he will get to When Michael was in Australia as a kid, his dad went to Hong Kong for Business a lot and while he was away his mother left town, to Los Angeles, taking Michael with her but leaving his brother alone at home. Because they're flesh and blood, there will be nothing said or done that can't be fixed and they will be able to mend their relationships. His brother Rhett had very long battle with drug addiction (he killed some pain) An acknowledgement of his issues and alluding to the reasons why leading to acceptance and forgiveness His sister Tina (sweet sister T) had a failed marriage, some men lie and cheat but now she is settled He says his father (Kell) ran. I think he did support Michael a lot but his main focus in life was his career and make money in general, this tore them apart in various ways but he always had love for them and wanted them all to come back together which Michael repeatedly made happen by buying them houses next to each other on the Gold Coast in Australia and always organising family get togethers over Xmas and other holidays. A very personal song. |

I agree that this is likely about atheism given the "down on your knees" reference. It's about looking for the answers for your problems or some guidance on where to go in life when "you are all you need", "it's all in your hands", "do it for yourself". I think the "on the talk back show. On the radio, at the local bar" lines are basically just saying everywhere you go people are looking for answers and commonly asking our to a god. |
