Jackie Soul was a class act. I commend Alabama for mentioning Jackie in the song Shagging on the Blvd.
In 1969, my uncle Lee took me to a honky-tonk called "Bears Den" in Burke County, NC. Jackie Soul was fronting for a band. He was only a few inches too tall to be considered a midget. He always dressed in a 3-piece suit with lots of gold jewelry, rings on every finger, hair emaculent and top notch singer-entertainer. Back in 1969 the average worker made around $250 a month. For the owner of Bears Den Jackie was pulling 200 people that paid a cover charge of $2 each. Club owners appreciated Jackie and he sang 3 Night's a week. Not sure how much they paid him. I was 12 years old the first time I saw and heard him sing.
I remember after Jackie finish a set of music the club owner took him to the Blackjack room where they had Jackie a box to stand on to play Blackjack.
He loved to gamble and I never seen him lose.
Not 100% sure, but believe the band was "Hokus Pokùs".
