To me, this song is a powerful anthem of never giving up, no matter how out of place you feel. “Astronaut on the ocean floor” and “Bird with a broken wing” are contradictions between someone’s dreams and their reality. Someone who wants to fly but is limited to staying on the ground, but continuing to press on until the day they can fly again—and choosing to make the most of it. They can’t fly, but they can still sing, and sing they will. |

This song makes me think of someone sacrificing everything for someone they love. “I bare my skin and I count my sins and I close my eyes and I take it in” is similar to “I prepare myself to suffer and I remember all the reasons why I have to do this and I brace myself and I stay in the moment so that I’ll remember every second.” The first verse describes how they’ve reached the point when they realize that everything is going wrong (“When the day has come that I’ve lost my way around” implies that they’ve been wandering aimlessly for a while refusing to accept it), and the second verse describes how they choose to focus on someone else above their own problems (“I will be your scarecrow” implies that they’re willing to be attacked by the crows to keep someone else safe). “You tell me to hold on but innocence is gone and what was right is wrong” is similar to “You don’t want me to leave you if this kills me but we both know that I won’t survive and though the right thing to do is to make you happy it’s not the right option right now.” That’s just my take on it. |
