I think it's easy to forget this song follows musically from Perfect. Perfect feels to me written from the man's perspective, about a relationship gone wrong but still "friends" (Perfect strangers when we meet / Strangers on the street / Lovers when we sleep) - Maybe the woman was a bit cold and couldn't quite requite the love, at least how the man perceives it? Then Daphne Descends, harkening to the Apollo and Daphne story, explains this unrequited love from the woman's perspective - she desperately WANTED him but the inner conflict was too much, and now he's gone. Feels like the tragedy of an introverted woman unable to step out of her head until it's too late. |
