Bomb the Music Industry! – Future 86 Lyrics 1 year ago
this song is about someone with high aspirations (in this case, music) that knows they’re unrealistic. The narrator wants a life-saving love, so to speak — they want to have a relationship that convinces them to settle down and live happily and normally instead of going away and most likely failing at their dreams. But instead, they have this person they’re mostly just alright with, and they know that things will get worse, so there’s nothing to stay for.

Elvis Costello – Blame It on Cain Lyrics 1 year ago
I don’t have much to say on the overall meaning of the song but I see a lot of people puzzled about the last verse specifically. Genesis 4:14 is “Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me”— Cain is exiled, and that’s what “Think I’ve been living a little too long on the outskirts of town/ I think I’m going insane from talking to myself for so long” is about.

“Oh but I’ve never been accused” seems to me like direct reference to the mark put on Cain to keep him from being punished by other people for the murder of Abel (4:15). These lines at least suggest that there is more to the speaker’s connection to Cain than just randomness; they might connect heavily with the Biblical story, as well, for any number of reasons.

The Western States Motel – Southwest Planes Lyrics 1 year ago
The line “one of these days and it won’t be long / look for me baby and I’ll be gone” is definitely in reference to an exact line from Janie in Their Eyes Were Watching God (end of ch12, if anyone cares to check this— ‘some of dese mornin’s and it won’t be long, you gointuh wake up callin’ me and Ah’ll be gone”).

I am reading this book for school and got so excited to have recognized that line haha
