Soulwax – Proverbial Pants Lyrics 9 days ago
Basically about someone who’s caught between wanting love and being absolutely terrified of it. They care so much that it freaks them out, so they push the other person away while secretly hoping that person pulls them back in. The quote 'don’t come too close, you’ll ruin it' is that classic avoidant panic, as in I want you, but if you really see me, I’m scared you’ll hate what you find. They’re embarrassed by how intense their feelings are and they don’t want to look stupid, so they make jokes, act detached, and pretend they’re fine, even though they desperately want reassurance. The song is messy, emotional, a bit self-aware, and very insecure. It’s someone who wants connection so badly but can’t stop sabotaging it because they assume getting close will end badly. It’s that whole 'please love me, but don’t say it too loudly because I’ll freak out' vibe.

ABBA – The Winner Takes It All Lyrics 9 months ago
such an insane feeling of loss to the melody. general vibe of coming to terms that someone she loved has betrayed her in some way and she must leave despite there being love there. let's break it down.

the beginning feels like the moment she realised what has happened. they are facing her trying to explain and despite the countless times trying to fix it, they cannot return back to where they were before this situation. she sounds tired of it all.

'the winner takes it all, the loser's standing small' alludes to the fact that maybe her lover has fallen for someone else and that she sees them as better than her. she is learning to accept this, instead of being upset about it.

'i was in your arms thinking i belonged there' shows the reminiscence with the knowledge of how foolish she was to trust this person in hindsight. same goes for 'playing by the rules' that she knew that it was going to end poorly but the rules of love are that you stay and work through it no matter what.

'the guards may throw a dice' references luck and the idea of decision being played by the way things fall, what will be will be.

'does she kiss like i used to kiss you' this whole verse is asking if it was worth the loss of her. 'somewhere deep inside you must know i miss you' is her vulnerability of admitting the feelings are still there despite the way he's hurt her. then at the end 'rules must be obeyed' another nod to rules and borderline loyalty of how she was following the rules of marriage when he wasn't.

'spectators of the show, always staying low' arguing that people she was close to knew but the minute that it all comes out they pretend it's not happening.

'i don't wanna talk if it makes you feel sad' even after all this she still considers his feelings. 'i apologise' she evidently blames herself. towards the end of this verse however we can see she is being ironic showing him what he has done to her and the lasting effects she will have to live with.

Manic Street Preachers – The Girl Who Wanted To Be God Lyrics 9 months ago
i think it's about a girl who applies meaning to things that have no meaning. maybe a slight dig at people like myself who are doing very that.

'the girl who wanted to be god' sounds like someone who wanted to have control over things that cannot be.

the first verse suggesting 'there are no sunsets just silence' appears to be someone who is romanticising things in life when it's all meaningless.

verse 2 contradicts this with a feel of her meaning being fulfilling to her life 'the dawn is still breaking' has an essence of hope in her darkest days that she can see the sunset again.

then 'hold me she says love me to death' sounds like she is frightened to face real life and needs support in doing so. or alternatively that she feels love towards everything but receives nothing in return and is craving an intimate bond from anyone to get that same feeling she gets staring at things she knows are meaningless to life.

Manic Street Preachers – Yourself Lyrics 9 months ago
main themes of insecurity and lack of self worth but i think that yourself being repeated so much is further describing how it feels to live with yourself and what you know about you that others don't. the dark stuff in your head that nobody else knows you're feeling

London After Midnight – Your Best Nightmare Lyrics 9 months ago
i don't think this has very deep meaning i can't lie. it's giving when Type O used to write songs about completely comedic things. to put it simply she had an orgasm by him so good that she died. but lets break it down.

at the beginning he's going to sleep thinking of her and it's driving him insane, but to him 'i'm your best nightmare' showing his arrogancy and/or dominance.

next verse they finally sleep with him and it's better than he ever expected. very explicit retelling of this encounter. i love that it describes a bordeline knowing and slight love connection (suggesting a realisation of being soulmates, contrarary to previous descriptions)

i love the lyric 'untainted passion should have no control' so good literalyl sounds like he's saying that he's somehow powerless with her because he trusts her.

then i start giggling because it's so exaggerated as i said at the start of my interpretation.

i tend to envision things when i listen to music and this is definitely one of them. i think he's discussing themes of seduction and being with that one person loving them no matter what.

i agree with the other commenter that this is in reference to a dom/sub relationship but with less dark themes. i think it's suggesting 'what would you do to prove your love to me.' kinda suggesting that i will give you all the pleasure in the world if you choose me and only me.

i think he is teasing his submissive trying to make them believe that they are not doing enough to please him as part of some sort of degradation strategy. locking them in as though they can be discarded at any time and must stay at the level they are.

a big part of this is language such as 'i could' saying this is what could be if you sign up to be in this commitment forever. very very sacred.

Aqualung – If I Fall Lyrics 10 months ago
i like to look for a romantic meaning to all songs but i do think i'd be correct here. i think it's about a strong love where someone has never been loved before. they always thought they had been but it was toxic and they never realised until they met this person. they feel vulnerable, happy and understood but in a way that makes them fear it all. i think this is a person trying to express how they feel for the first time but still wary of being hurt again.

'seems to me, i'm exactly where i dreamed i would be' says the most to me. i think it's signifying that it was always something they wanted but in their head would never happen to them for whatever reason makes them insecure.

similarly, 'never saw it coming' 'i don't know where to turn' represents how they never believed this kind of experience to actually exist and now they want to talk to someone else about it but don't trust anyone but the person they are singing about. being in love can feel very alone to someone holding deep trauma and i think this is what the writer is experiencing.

beautiful song that has been stuck in my head at the moment and has guided me through a lot.

It's obviously romantic goth so it's bound to be a song led by the power of romance and seduction but the melody reminds me of something from a panto in the weirdest way.

When I hear it I visualise someone 'love bombing someone' (giving them false promises) saying I could do all these things to tempt someone to be with them to only hurt them later with the classic 'I did all these things for you why are you refusing to submit to me now'

Kind of like a dom/sub relationship but a negative one where it leads to emotional turmoil.

With the title being 'This Paradise' it reminds me of someone saying this is the life you could have if you just take this chance, except the repetition of it sounds as though the narrator is manipulating them into it with bad intentions.

Lot of nod at how power is the greatest currency 'together we'll rule our would, together we'll rule theirs too' like the temptation of gaining more power but at what cost...

@[Aztrid:48972] this is beautiful. I am going through this myself and it is indescribable to someone who has never experienced it.

Thank you for sharing. Men struggle with the allowance of love, especially the emotionally damaged ones. I try to tell him how incredible he is in some way everytime I see him. I hope 12 years later this still applies to you.

In my opinion, the song is about the feelings that are followed after death. The way that even when someone dies they are alive, as long as they are remembered.

It is a reminder to be a good person and that even if you're struggling, you mean something to someone and to leave the earth will have an impact. It speaks strong messages of changing someone's life for the better and not having the words to describe how good they feel now.

It could also represent how we live on after death in reference to spirituality and souls. 'Beat inside me, I'll be with you' sounds as though they'll always be in the heart then be as one after death.

A Flock of Seagulls – I Ran (So Far Away) Lyrics 2 years ago
it sounds to me like the description of falling in love with someone but being afraid and unexpectedly to her running away. in a sense that this person could feel too insecure or too involved. 'I couldn't get away' sounds to me that even though he ran, he may be checking in on her wishing for updates because he can't let go. 'Aurora Borealis comes in view' could be suggesting that he saw something better for him at the time that he left for, that only looked beautiful in a visual aspect but did not have meaning to him. 'Reached out a hand to try again' sounds like he went back to her, with hopes that she would give him another chance after leaving so unexpectedly. the line after using 'floating' could suggest that feeling of falling in love which makes you feel like it is just you and the other person and nothing else is around. but then he 'ran' again, suggesting that falling in love only makes him leave and nothing can change that.

it can also be suggested that 'I couldn't get away' is that no matter what he did to her (or didn't do) she was not letting him leave without a fight and was doing everything she could to change his mind.
