This song is about the sense of trying to please your partner and do everything to make them "happy" but it still not being enough, and they're always charging. "I won't be the one to disappoint you anymore, I know, I've said all this and that you've heard It all before" This shows that they feel that they are always disappointing their partner, and already said multiple times that it wouldn't happen again. "The trick is getting you to think that all this was your idea And that this was everything you've ever wanted out of here" The trick is to be the person you want me to be, for you to think I'm the one. "I'm not sure what's truly altruistic anymore, When every good thing that I do is listed and you're keeping score" I don't even know if I do things because I actually want to, or just because I know that you're demanding. "Love's not a competition but I'm winning" Love shouldn't be this way, everything feels "forced". I feel like I'm going out of my way a lot to make you happy.
