Once a well known Spin-lanthropist (connoisseur of all things related to the Spin Doctors), retired to the suburbs to a quiet life of song meaning.
| They Might Be Giants – Bangs Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| I imagine that what happened here is that the girl said something like "Didn't you even notice my new bangs?" and the guy went all out trying to make up for the fact that he doesn't really like the bangs, just doesn't want to hurt her feelings. Great song! | |
| Spin Doctors – Gorilla Boy Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| This song can be taken very literally (an actual gorilla boy), or it could be just about a really smooth charmer kid whom Chris compares to a gorilla for some odd reason. Good song. 5 stars. | |
| Spin Doctors – Uranium Century Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| A classic "look at what our society has become" song. The singer prompts corrupt world leaders to look at themselves and look at how ridiculous their lust for the spoils of war has become. Reminds me of War Pigs, but not quite as graphic. Good song. | |
| Crash Test Dummies – Two Knights And Maidens Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| This is a really amazing and beautiful song that holds a special place in my heart, but the one thing that gets me is that it ends on a cliff hanger! We never find out if the knights make it away from the tigers (probably not), and, after the tigers are done with the knights, who knows what they'll do?? No one is safe! Great song, 10 stars. | |
| Spin Doctors – At This Hour Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| From a literal standpoint, it seems that these lyrics are about a hobo and a rich person crossing paths on the street. I'd say they go a lot deeper than that, and deal with more psychological stuff. It's really about waking up and taking into account people who aren't as well off as you are. The rich person, upon seeing the hobo, starts to really think about their lifestyle. At first, they try to ignore him, but something tells them to not pretend that he's not there. The rich person starts putting themselves in the hobo's shoes, thinking about how his life must be and stuff. By the way, it's pretty clear at this point that the narrator of the song is the rich person's conscious telling them stuff they don't want to hear but know is true. Love the paint it black reference in this song. Fits pretty great. | |

| They Might Be Giants – Welcome To The Jungle Lyrics | 2 years ago |

This is such a good song!! I have a theory connecting this song and another TMBG song "Music Jail pt. 1 & 2" https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107859504839/ The jungle IS music jail and vice versa. It's all a big symbol for getting in over your head with the music industry. I think the singer is trying to get others to join his band, but at the time, he's kind of a mess. It's almost as if his life is.. a jungle. WOAH! He tries to convince them that music life is great and totally worth it, but they're kinda like weirded out by him. As they should be, comparing yourself to a bug is kind of weird. This music industry thing seems to be a common theme in TMBG songs (Cyclops Rock, Welcome To The Jungle). |

| They Might Be Giants – Music Jail, Pt. 1 & 2 Lyrics | 2 years ago |

This is a great song! Or at least, pt 1 is.... I have a theory connecting this song and underrated TMBG b-side, "Welcome To The Jungle". https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/140224/ The jungle is music jail and vice versa. It's all a big symbol for getting in over your head with the music industry. In music jail pt 1, you're excited to start a band but in pt 2, you realized that you weren't prepared for how it would take over your life. What's more is, once you're too far in, people in your life get pushed away. "Where you going fella, buddy, darling," are all people the singer knows who don't want to be around him anymore. Sad! This seems to be a common theme in TMBG songs (Cyclops Rock, Welcome To The Jungle). |

| I think it's just a bunch of fake puns. In buenos aires. | |
| Spin Doctors – Wow Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| This song is great! It seems very appropriate for it to have come out in 1999, as it gives off very big "the world is going to end in 2000" vibes. I think it's just about how the world's gone mad and everyone's just kinda like "Wow, we screwed up big. Oh well!". The world's messed up, and it's so far gone that we don't care anymore. Smile for the camera and raise your glass, Pull up your socks till they cover your ass. Cause nobody cares anymore! | |
| Spin Doctors – More Than She Knows Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| A great song about having a crush on somebody, but instead of being all like "I wish I was in a relationship with that person," they're like "That person wishes they were in a relationship with me." | |
| Spin Doctors – More Than Meets The Ear Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| This is Spin Doctors at their most hippie. They were definitely on drugs while writing this song. | |
| They Might Be Giants – I Am A Human Head Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| I think @jonnies is on the right track, but I think it's more about taking stuff for granted. So we have a great head for a friend, but then we take it for granted and decide we don't even need it. And proceed to do so with all of our possessions, until we have nothing. Then we realize that we probably should've kept the friend around cause we're all lonely n stuff. Such is the attitude of a human head. | |

| They Might Be Giants – Good To Be Alive Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| This is a great song! I personally think that it's the sequel to the TMBG song My Man, https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858614929, which, if you'll recall, is about a guy coming to terms with his paralysis. In My Man, he's kind of calm about it but you can tell his disappointed that he'll never walk again. In this song, it the same guy kind of recovering from paralysis but realizing that it's all gonna be ok. Maybe he's been taking some mindfulness classes or something, cause he sounds really zen. Talking to his body parts is taking a different approach to his paralysis; before he just saw his body as something useless. I love that he salutes his hand, seeing it as not something useless, but something "five fingers strong" and that he's glad to have it back. And what really ties this theory together for me is the line "just barely more than decoration". What I really love about this song is that many TMBG songs are very bleak, but this one actually brings a positive outlook on life. | |
| They Might Be Giants – Spiraling Shape Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
It's about drugs. I feel like half of the song is someone saying "don't try drugs", and the other half is someone else saying "do try drugs". I'd say the verses are semi-sarcastic parents trying to convince a wayward teen out of taking drugs; "Go ahead and wreck your life, that might be good". And then the chorus is the story of the kid's experience with drugs. Their opinion obviously flips around a lot in the beginning, thinking they like drugs at first and then saying it's a fraud and a fake, but they eventually end up trying them again. I'd say the "Don't spend the rest of your life wondering" is totally something a drug addict would say to someone they want to get hooked. Of course, all of the times that the main character is falling through the void, that's the first few times that they try drugs and realize that it's maybe something they don't want to do. I don't know what the "spiral in their eyes" part is about. Maybe it's LSD specifically. Only the Johns know for sure. |
