@[TheDreamWeaver:46853] dude I used to be a heroin addict and it doesn't make you THAT numb physically, it dulls pain-its better at dulling emotional pain so "my hands are stuck to my jeans" makes no sense in your telling. Actually in your theory cocaine would make more sense since that LITERALLY bulbs the areas it's in contact with (whether nose, arm if injecting etc...).
Frankly I don't think it has anything to do with drugs, it's more about a woman who "spins sugar" as in makes candyfloss and he is desperately trying to get her attention that's why after "15 or more" his guts can't take many more (candyfloss)
As for the sky turning green and the grass different shades of blue and every member of parliament tripping on glue he is explicitly saying it'll "take all these things and all that time, till my sugar spun sister is happy with this love of mine". To me he says it just as plainly as how "going down*" is about orally pleasing the woman he's with. There are songs that are more cryptic but this isn't one of them in my opinion |

According to NPR (who I'm sure spoke to Alan about this song and the video) the song "recalls a friend's substance abuse, a lifetime of dependence on others and a soul-crushing future of pointless drug tests." And as someone who's been there yeah it is soul crushing and futile-when I was ready to stop I stopped, no amount of pissing into cups in front of people to be tested before I got my meds was going to change that.
The rest of the song I guess can have interpretations in different ways and each way can be right but I don't think the there's much denying thats what the first verse at the least is about |

@[foreverdrone:46489] ahhh it's "cloven hooves" thanks for that-now it makes sense, especially in conjunction with "save me I am not a goat". I'm not sure about your first statement about if he was crucified over again it would just be a "cleaner" method of killing (although it certainly would be), I thought of the "new nails" title being more a reference to how Christ is constantly being crucified over and over again by fascists and others corrupting his words for they're own gain. I'm not a believer myself mind you but I am fascinated and very interested in religious history and theology.
Also it is rather bonkers that some Christians will become so enraged at saying Jesus was a Jew. We don't really have the same amount or fervour of Christians in Scotland but not doubt there are still a few here who would be offended at that factual remark

I don't think its "m-16" like the gun, it's "M-i6" as in the UKs version of the CIA and what was the KGB (although thats not really the official name, it's colloquial like our internal affairs version was called M-i5,M-i7 was for propaganda and m-i8 for radio security service. They aren't really around anymore though since the cold war ended but been taken over by other organisations like Serious Organised Criminal Agency has taken over M-i5 for example). |

@[caucasian:46267] the vocals/lyrics are there to add another element to the overall tone of the song, nothing more or less than that. It's like asking why Sigur ros sing in "hopelandic" rather than their native Iceland or another language. Or asking why Death in Veags' "Dirge" only has vocalisation which is basically just "la la laaaa". I think you're trying to look for something more here than there is. I'm not being down on you for that because music is an art and so has multiple interpretations but in this case I genuinely think you're looking for more than there is. The appeal is like any other instrumentation in a song, it adds something to it. I dunno, there's a LOT to be said about music, music as an art and the feeling it can give you that just can't be put into words but there's not some overarching "point" you can give to music as it means something different to everyone-your basically chasing your own tail if you try and do that, which it sounds to me like your doing.

@[GenocidalGerbi:45617] that's kinda how I've interpreted it too, it's as though in that moment he's seeing street lights which has him thinking of fairgrounds and better times but can't see the road signs pointing to the "fairgrounds" (better times) although he's tried a 100 times. Also he's wondering if his love would notice or care if he were to just disappear but he still has his music and memories, even if some of them are sad they still mean something to him and it's something he can always rely on till the end.
Or I could just be reading too much into it and maybe projecting myself onto the song-either way it's a wonderful, melancholic and beautiful song like so much of their music. And I agree no one should have to feel like that, at least not alone |

@[thefuzzybug:45616] ok this is years after your post so no idea if you'll even see this but I've also wanted this album to be played at my funeral since I first heard it when I was around 20 and I just happen to be 39 too as well as having a life of hard living (addiction, mental health issues, epilepsy and more) and I just happened to be listening to Cody right now-i came here because it's a live version I'm listening to and I wanted to check a line of the song when I saw your post. I dunno your post just struck me because of the age your cousin was, same choice of album and also a hard living life (I'm not suggesting at all your cousin had the same issues as me of course). I'm really sorry for your loss and I hope the funeral went as well as can be expected. Apologies for the long reply, like I said your post just struck me especially since passing away was a very real prospect for me every day for over a decade so I thought about things a lot. One theory is the Guns versus Butter model came from the USA just before they entered WW1. There was a great need of nitrates for explosives and fertilizer and Chile was neutral so the USA need to find its own source of nitrates which they did in Alabama but not till a deadlock in Congress was broken to sponsor the National Defense act of 1916-it was presented by the news media as "guns and butter" because they now had the secretary of agriculture manufacturer nitrates in peace and war but the way some were presenting it was guns versus butter was never really accurate because food was always going to be secure. There's other theories too but I think that's the earliest reference even if it wasn't presented correctly at the time |

@[Richard:43588] sh yeah theres a lot to parse out from just a few verses. First you have the literal economic model of "guns versus butter", it's a macroeconomic idea, just look up that on Wikipedia, it's well known. Then in the first verse he doesn't want to die for an ideal he doesn't believe in (firstly the fatherland) as he thinks he's more than iron in his blood, otherwise what's that under his short (a heart). The face he talks about the Fatherland likely means the Nazis but I think there's a little more to it underneath but I'll circle back later.
Next verse is clearly Soviet Russia, he hears there's joy in labour, motherland is no place to cry for, he just wants to hide his head in the sand and again he asks well what's under my short (his heart-he knows he is more than production, and a clone because he can feel something more in him).
This is where I said I'd circle back-remember when this was written, the Cold War was at its height, East Germany and West Germany was still a thing, the some people were genuinely looking back at the Nazi era with some fondness and of course the West was telling us to keep our heads down and not worry and coming out but of course he's worrying, he's shacking as he knows where this can lead and all around him everyone in power seems to be just using humans as models and workers but again, because of that beating under his shirt he knows he's more than that. He just wants to live. Anyway that's a bit long, I've maybe seen more than is actually there but that's my thoughts lol
