Spoon – Plastic Mylar Lyrics 2 years ago
Reminds me of Jefferson Airplane's Plastic Fantastic Lover. She is a self-consumed activist, who he's attracted to, but he's not really into her causes, just her. He puts on an act, just to be with her. Plastic Mylar is him, shiny and just a reflection of her and he feels somewhat artificial. He's not even sure just what her causes really are, they are just a motion-ment, i.e. endless activity. In fact, he's jealous of her commitment and knows he can never meet her expectations, but he wishes he could. He wishes she could save his life (from irrelevance?). He wishes he could really get to know her as a person, not just her facade as a activist. He fears he is too shallow for her.

The Shins – Painting a Hole Lyrics 2 years ago
Try this.

This song is political, concerning the class system in our society. It targets the indifference of privileged Annuity Babies ("Elegant hands unemployed"), to the caustic damage (doors on the oven) that their privilege causes everyone else. Mercer implies that they are fooling themselves, like cartoon characters, painting a hole to escape their responsibilities to others. They are shielded, at least to some extent by virtue of their birth, from the exploiters (vultures) who rule the world, but the platitudes (kisses) that they offer to the rest of us, implying everything will be just fine, is a gross delusion. In reality, their trajectory is towards violence, which some might even desire.

The song is about acquisition disease, the hallmark of capitalism, and the scourge that has thoroughly screwed up humankind since the inception of civilization. Very poignant song and showcases the relevancy of Smith's poetry.

Hard to fathom, but this is about how we really need socialism ("...to be here together") to survive an otherwise meaningless life.

Built to Spill – Time Trap Lyrics 2 years ago
Remember were Doug was born and raised, Twin Falls, Idaho. I was raise in Idaho as well and I can confirm that many of my contemporaries were in a time trap, living in a past that never was.

So many felt so certain, in their bones, that they were living life as it should be, but it they never realized how narrow and confined it really was. They found it difficult to appreciate that other people might have a different perspective.

This is not to bee too critical of my time in that community, but I had to leave it behind, because it seemed like a trap. This could apply to many people, from many communities around the world.

Built to Spill – Strange Lyrics 2 years ago
Think about how strange existence is. We try to explain it, in so may ways, religion, science, philosophy, arts. All fail in the final examination, however much one may want to cling to a particular explanation. It fails and we all know it, even if we have trouble admitting it..

Why did life arise on this particular planet? Why in this particular form? Is this the only way? how strange is our world compared to other worlds, which we know exist but seem to be so completely different?

Why after 3 billion years did a sentient species arise, one who can understand its existence and it loneliness? Why here and nowhere else? Fermi's paradox can not be easily explained. Where are the rest of them? Are we really alone? Is that strange?

How does existence arise from the infinitesimal in the 1st place? What support existence as one descends into infinite regress? The strangeness of our universe confounds our greatest scientists and theologians.

I think this is the core of this song with its strange and moody melody and cryptic lyrics.

Radiohead – Myxomatosis. (Judge, Jury, & Executioner.) Lyrics 3 years ago
It might be worth mentioning that myxomatosis was a virus introduced in several counties (Australia, Brazil) to eliminate rabbits. I suspect that the song could be about "viral thoughts" (propaganda) introduced to eliminate other thoughts, unacceptable to the powers that be. In keeping with the theme of this album.
