Iris Dement – My Life Lyrics 2 years ago
So so sweet and so accurate. To give happiness and comfort to those in our small circle is the greatest gift of all. No one will remember anything beyond that. But for a while, that means everything. Simply brilliant.

Laura Nyro – Wedding Bell Blues Lyrics 3 years ago
@[freewheelinmike:42122] Amen. And there's clever cycle of other senses she uses in the lyric -- Will I ever see? Will I ever hear? Will we ever kiss? And all the sights and sounds that come with her hopes and dreams. Ya. Fantastic. (Just BTW, Billy Strayhorn wrote "Lush Life" in high school. I don't know how to explain that sort of talent.

Sade – Bring Me Home Lyrics 3 years ago
Such a deep, great song. Who hasn't wished to be taken away like this in their lowest moments? It's not suicidal exactly -- it's hoping for someone else to end it all. So deeply sad.

Florence + the Machine – I'm Not Calling You a Liar Lyrics 3 years ago
Longing. Deep and powerful. *****

Ella Fitzgerald – Get Out Of Town Lyrics 3 years ago
Man. All Through The Night and Get Out of Town are Cole Porter vehicles for the experience of gay men in love. So incredibly sad.

Donovan – Sunny Goodge Street Lyrics 3 years ago
The song is about getting stoned. Goodge Street is the London tube station where he picks up his hash. From then on ii's a lovely trip.

Warren Zevon – Sentimental Hygiene Lyrics 3 years ago
OMG. Really? He is just sick of all the divisiveness and wants to escape it. Nothing about war, nothing about recovery. Can\'t imagine how he\'s survive in today\'s even more divisive world.

@[bauble:41797] Nonsense. None of this is accurate.

Warren Zevon – Genius Lyrics 3 years ago
I love the tune, the string arrangement and the incredibly smart lyric. \n\nNo one else could have made this rhyme:\n\n"He thinks he\'ll be alright but he doesn\'t know for sure\nLike every other unindicted co-conspirator"\n\nor this one:\n\n"The poet who lived next door when you were young and poor\nGrew up to be a backstabbing entrepreneur"\n\nI love Dylan but Mozambique is child\'s play next to this.

Warren Zevon – Sacrificial Lambs Lyrics 3 years ago
The scam has no religion, no party and nothing at its centre but pure greed. That\'s the song. You fall for it, it\'s your fault.

submissions
Warren Zevon – The Indifference Of Heaven Lyrics 3 years ago
He looks at life and loss really broadly here - all life folds back into the sea - and yet there\'s a social context. Bruce might sing his uplifting songs but his life is different from that of the poor, whose suffering just goes on and on. Heartbreaking.

Warren Zevon – Similar To Rain Lyrics 3 years ago
@[TheThornBirds:41796] There\'s nothing about materialism or cold-heartedness. It\'s just "beware your heart"

Warren Zevon – Similar To Rain Lyrics 3 years ago
A heartbreaking song with the melody of a classic American ballad, Too bad it\'s obscured in this arrangement. One of my favourites of his songs.

submissions
Warren Zevon – Seminole Bingo Lyrics 3 years ago
It\'s simple. It\'s about the decline of a New York shyster digging himself deeper and deeper into the mire. Done for laughs,

submissions
Warren Zevon – Porcelain Monkey Lyrics 3 years ago
It\'s not mysterious at all! It\'s about the tragic decline of Elvis Presley and the guilt of the "regicidal" users around him. It\'s harsh, straight up and tragic.

submissions
Warren Zevon – Veracruz Lyrics 3 years ago
@[Counterclockwerk:41795] Woodrow Wilson wasn\'t born until the 1850s. They\'re "his guns" in the song. It\'s obviously about 1914.

The Wallflowers – When You're On Top Lyrics 3 years ago
@[jassss:41782] In fact, it\'s a clever reply from the blue-eyed son who Dyland questioned in A Hard Rain\'s A Gonna Fall --\r\n\r\nOh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?\r\nAnd where have you been, my darling young one?\r\nI’ve stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains\r\nI’ve walked and I’ve crawled on six crooked highways\r\nI’ve stepped in the middle of seven sad forests\r\nI’ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans\r\nI’ve been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard\r\n

The Wallflowers – When You're On Top Lyrics 3 years ago
@[thinkinghurts:41781] Sounds like "Hard Rain" melodically and it mirrors the scan of the wording though not the words. I think he\'s talking about his dad here and that\'s why he used this song form.

@[jassss:41780] You must get awfully disappointed when you find out you\'re wrong. I immediately heard the connection to "A Hard Rain\'s Gonna Fall". I guess I didn\'t hear that so my bad.

The Wailin' Jennys – Apocalypse Lullaby Lyrics 3 years ago
Horribly sad. The coming climate catastrophe is approaching and so few have even begun to live (light unshone). And yet here we are, making as much of a paradise of it as we can for as long as we can.

Van Morrison – Waiting Game Lyrics 3 years ago

U2 – The Hands That Built America Lyrics 3 years ago
Nice thought, ramshotel. "Hanging steel" in the Manhattan skyline brings to my mind the Mohawk nations of Canada and New England as well. Not saying it\'s not about the Irish, but there\'s room for interpretation.

The Tragically Hip – Three Pistols Lyrics 3 years ago
It sure feels like murder, doesn\'t it? It\'s intentionally surreal, so there are moments of magic, like the lover who waits by his grave to destroy the tributes of other girls. Trois Pistoles is a town in Quebec a day\'s drive away from Canoe Lake, where Tom Thompson died, so that\'s not a thing. Also, The group of 7 were a renaissance of a sort in their day though time has passed and they\'re now symbolic of establishment painting in Canada.

Tracy Chapman – Mountains O' Things Lyrics 3 years ago
Such a clever song about the folly of materialism. The narrator is just a typical American striver whose dreams of greatness are more important than their values.\n\nIt\'s gonna take all my mountains o\' things\nTo surround me\nKeep all my enemies away\nKeep my sadness and loneliness at bay\n\nAin\'t gonna work

submissions
Tracy Chapman – At This Point In My Life Lyrics 3 years ago
Such an honest and profound song. You just want it to work it out for her. The other thing I like is the swing of the melody - there are moments that feel like a spiritual.

Tracy Chapman – New Beginning Lyrics 3 years ago
What\'s so weird about this is that it follow "Heaven\'s Here On Earth". It\'s a great album but so so schitzo.

Tom Tom Club – Wordy Rappinghood Lyrics 3 years ago
Weirdly reminds me of Hamlet when he\'s through with words and wonders WTF to do. Maybe Chris and Tina are just faking madness. And I agree with hokeyWB on the David Byrne as Claudius thing. (Yes, I know i just put words in your mouth).

Tom Petty – Learning to Fly Lyrics 3 years ago
Optimism is worthless unless you get up every day and work on your dream. Over and over Tom Petty said that in one form or another. Losing the girl, sucking at making singles, failing to bring out the best in someone, realizing something too late. Over and over. Nevertheless, he kept saying, in one way or another "I won\'t back down". God bless him.

Portishead – Roads Lyrics 3 years ago
I haven’t read everybody’s take but I can’t agree with the ones I’ve read. The key lyric is “Can’t anybody see we’ve got a war to fight”. And she’s alone in that fight. People around her have acquiesced in one way or another or to one degree or another and it just ain’t right. The world is still in the crapper (I agree, Beth) and we’ve got to get together and fight for a better one.

submissions
Thom Yorke – The Eraser Lyrics 3 years ago
"You know the answer so why do you ask"? This is a song about self-delusion. He\'s at the moment when he realizes she\'s wrong for him, whatever he might have thought, however right she might have been in the past.

Sufjan Stevens – Mercury Lyrics 3 years ago

A plea for compassion for a fallen star. He doesn\'t gloss it over, but she had it hard and the world treated her harshly.

Sufjan Stevens – The Greatest Gift Lyrics 3 years ago
I wonder if he once considered ending Carrie and Lowell with this note of optimism. He wrote it for the album, after all. But I can see that it fights with the pain that permeated it. And we do that know that "signs and wonders" kept him alive.
