Gorilla, You're a Desperado Lyrics
Big gorilla at the L.A. Zoo
Snatched the glasses right off my face
Took the keys to my BMW
Left me here to take his place
I wish the ape a lot of success
I'm sorry my apartments a mess
Most of all, I'm sorry if I made you blue
I'm betting the gorilla will too
They say Jesus will find you whereever you go
But when He'll come looking fo you, they don't know
In the meantime keep your profile low
Gorilla, you're a desperado
He built a house on an acre of land
He called it Villa Gorilla
Now I hear he's getting divorced
Laying low at L'Ermitage, of course
Then the ape grew very depressed
Went through transactional analysis
He plays racquetball and runs in the rain
Still he's shackled to a platinum chain
Big gorilla at the L.A. Zoo
Snatched the glasses right off my face
Took the keys to my BMW
Left me here to take his place
Snatched the glasses right off my face
Took the keys to my BMW
Left me here to take his place
I'm sorry my apartments a mess
Most of all, I'm sorry if I made you blue
I'm betting the gorilla will too
But when He'll come looking fo you, they don't know
In the meantime keep your profile low
Gorilla, you're a desperado
He called it Villa Gorilla
Now I hear he's getting divorced
Laying low at L'Ermitage, of course
Went through transactional analysis
He plays racquetball and runs in the rain
Still he's shackled to a platinum chain
Snatched the glasses right off my face
Took the keys to my BMW
Left me here to take his place

The character in the song is as much a prisoner as the the Gorilla in the zoo but, instead, a prisoner of the material world, spritually caged by the spoils.
I would only expect Zevon to rhyme "zoo" with "BMW" (That's a complement, Warren) Amarzing song So refreshing to hear a song like this. It's like a musical lifeboat in an ocean of second-rate pop singles crap. Great vocal deliver. Amazingly original lyrics. What more can someone say? It's classic Warren Zevon.
George Gruel - WZ's "road manager and best friend" is also referred to time to time as Gorilla Gruel. He has also published books about WZ under the imprint Big Gorilla books, so I'm going to go out on a limb, pun intended, and say that the song is about him.
Great fun. If there\'s a message, it\'s that we\'re not that advanced. Not at all.
