A nightcrawler has several different definitions, however the one that applies in Scott's song would be "a person who is socially active at night". Throughout the song Scott, Swae Lee and Chief Keef are bragging about the glory of their wealthy lives, of which they choose to spend their money on a selection of nightlife activities. Their excuse for their reckless decisions is the fact that they are rich, young men who solely seek out to fulfill their temptations, these include: women, drugs and alcohol. However, I believe there is a darker undertone here as Scott outlines the insatiable habits his riches instill and the addiction he develops for the nightlife. Notably, Scott and his features are repeatedly begging for "more" over the course of the song. Whether this be money, girls or drugs they remain unsatisfied. This will eventually become a problem as their resources run dry, but for the moment they live in the present. |

The phrase itself "blood, sweat & tears" is a form of expression that refers to grueling work that is put into something in order to acquire a degree of success (well, that is the aim - this doesn't necessarily happen). Often, whilst visually pairing the music video with the song, my mind strays to The Seven Deadly Sins - a group of vices in regards to Christianity teachings - which is honestly quite perfect considering that BTS is made up of seven members. The sins are as following; wrath, sloth, greed, vanity, gluttony, envy and lust. Looking at the song's lyrics, and the members singing about their yearning for their object of affection - I believe Blood Sweat & Tears represents lust, or more specifically, an unrequited desire. All members sing about a 'girl' of whom they have fallen victim to, in terms of obsession and compulsive, perverted thoughts. Throughout the course of the song, they use breathy and honeyed voices - embodying the toll this deadly infatuation has taken on them. The girl is a curse bestowed upon them - she is a villain. They refer to her as a devil - a hellish, sinful creature. Unable to quieten or silence their temptation, thus, it becomes a lethal inner manifestation. So far so, that they are willing to renounce everything just for the girl's affections. |

In Six Feet Under, The Weeknd is discussing the life of a female prostitute. Her singular goal in life is to make money and materialistic gains. The Weeknd underlines the solitude of her lifestyle, and her inability to truly love. Yet, he simultaneously remarks upon her wish to succeed and become a wealthy individual. Here are several key verses that analyse the message of the song: Kill off all her feelings = The prostitute must discard of any emotional attachment to a client because it would make her vulnerable and open to hurt. She know her pussy got a fan base = The prostitute is well sought after by many men, clearly she is notorious, and this also demonstrates her many sexual relations. When it comes to money she play no games = The prostitute cares about the money and only the money. Louis Vuitton her husband = This reflects the prostitute's taste for lavish accessories and her indulgence in luxury goods. She seems to have a lot of love and dependency for her materialistic items, much like a marital relationship. She don't depend on anybody = The prostitute is a 'lone wolf' type and a social outcast but she prefers it that way. Thus, she has learned to adapt and reaps the benefits of working alone. Six feet under she gon' get that fucking paper = Whether people are dying or not, the prostitute will always strive to receive money. She will do so until the end of her life. Oh murder, oh murder = The prostitute is both literally and figuratively succeeding in her vendetta of obtaining money. Whether this be through more extreme means such as resorting to murder, or, quite simply, she performs so well in her job that her clients are willing to pay her any amount. Thus, the client feels as if he is being "killed" by her. Real love's hard to find = The prostitute has been disappointed in her romantic life, so she chooses to no longer engage with it - excluding her job though it is purely physical. You ain't gon' catch her crying = The prostitute is emotionally detached and brittle after being worn down for years. However, she decides that her current state is for the best. Six feet under she gon' kill me for that paper = The voice of the man whom The Weeknd and Future personify in this song has fallen victim to the prostitute's schemes. There is a sinister undertone here, as the prostitute is unafraid to murder the man and take all his money. He simultaneously condemns |
