Tool – Culling Voices Lyrics 4 years ago
The protagonist of the song is approaching a clarity of mind where he realizes much of his distrust of people were the result of assumptions and projections of insecurity. Links back to the title track where he speaks of a fear that led him to retreat from others, realizing that this fear came more from a psychopathy within.

Maybe the protagonist is not talking about himself but rather those who point a finger in judgment and say they speak for God, or some sense of "truth" ("Whispers from within")

The song speaks to the fact that we can't always rely on intuition and gut feelings, and the religious often use concepts like "christ inside," "a word from the lord," or "telling the truth" as an excuse to point the finger at others. Maynard is saying "i see this for what it is and i reject it, in myself and in others alike."

perhaps the song is about the promise of death waking us up to live, to stop floating thru life as if we will never leave it

"Sound our dire reveille
Rouse all from our apathy
Lest we
Cease to be"

Even before death, we can live without purpose and intention , "creasing to be" while still alive.

The song implores us to "stay the grand finale" as in to hold it off. To not simply drift toward death but to swim and live a full life in the time allotted.

Coming from the previous song about aging and facing mortality, this song feels like a call to stop living as if life will last forever.

Tool – Invincible Lyrics 4 years ago
I interpret this as about the fiery spirit in our youthfulness waning as we grow older. Not in the sense that we lose our sense of joy with age, but more a picture of someone holding on to the "fight and win" approach to life. As the protagonist gets older he realizes the intensity he once faced life with is wearing down on him. The old myths of living forever , the naive idea that we are unstoppable; these fantasies begin to teeter precariously on the edge of certainty when mortality starts to rear its head.

The song laments this dying of our spirit while also embracing a more gentle way of living. Not so much "feet to the fire and sword in the air" but something more simple. The song represents something of a changing of the guard in the protagonists personality.

"the truth never got in my way
Before now, feel the sting
Feeling time bearing down"

Tool – Fear Inoculum Lyrics 4 years ago
"The deceiver says: 'You belong to me, you don't want to breathe the light of the others'"

Reminds me of the God I was raised to worship. Reminds me of the the Christianity that taught me to fear the world, to seek refuge in an unseen, unfelt delusion. To hide in His hands, isolated from others.

This song seems it could also be about someone stepping away from a controlling and narcissistic person but I think it goes deeper then being about just other human beings. Whoever or whatever is being addressed as "deciever," whether a God, man, or fear itself, the point is that the singer is becoming immune to it. Waking up to reality, maturing out of delusion.

Perhaps the idea is about being misled or manipulated ("Contagion
I exhale you
Naive
I opened up to you")
fearing the world as a result but learning to trust and love and be part of the world again despite the hurt

To me, the overarching theme is putting the bullshit aside and ceasing the excuses. Whether this is breaking up with a toxic friend, religion, or self, the point is personal responsibility and letting go of being a victim to life. It's a much needed slap in the face. Finding that inner strength to carve your life

I always took a majority of lyrics being directed at another person who betrayed him but I like the idea of it being a deconversion manifesto

Maybe it's simultaneously and at different parts of the album a rejection of abusive people, abusive religions, and abusive self talk

@[YourNameHere117:39025] you don't need to be a Christian to recognize the benefit in pushing thru hardship to reach the benefit on the other side

In fact, one thing I think Christians get wrong is thinking they have some secret knowledge about life. Yes, the lessons learned in the gospels can be powerful but it's pointing to something about the human experience, acting like you can only reach this understanding thru Christianity is silly and elitist

@[Dieguincci:38845] i like this interpretation. Not one I had considered. Its makes sense considering this is a theme in a few Meshuggah songs, Transfixion and In Decay come to mind.

@[HellRaider:38701] lmao so you think meshuggahs message within this song is pro religion? Have you not listened to Terminal Illusions? If anything this song portrays someone who is a victim of religious conditioning, the deeper psyche elevated to the status of a God, resulting in a constant internal battle between the flesh and the spirit.

It's deeper then that but definitely has some interesting parallels. "Void of emptiness reign my truth" and
" Pieces to me strange wrapped up disguise" remind me of my experience with God.

Interesting parallels to religion here, themes of becoming one in "Christ" if assimilating into a toxic system of obedience and self denial

The ways that Christianity teaches us to die to ourselves, using shame and guilt to lead us to submission to an invisible Lord which get deferred to human masters, abusive spouses, bosses, systems etc.

"Symbols of perfection" (how religious people see themselves)

"Docile servant dogs" (what they are, a product of being taught to put others above yourself and disregard your needs as lesser)

"Our leashes are your limbs, computed deep within" (the religious programming becomes the tool of the narcissist)

The line "destroy erase improve" seems to take a critical look at the doctrine of inner crucifixion and being born again, the way church teaches us to hate and disregard our identities and shift into the singularity of God. All this to divide us from ourselves and make us pliable and easily conformable

Christian churches are often breeding grounds for good little workers who will submit to a Higher authority. God isn't real so all that submission, devotion, self denial, the focus on servitude as a virtue, etc becomes useful to the capitalist machine. Drained of our identity and left open to manipulation. Our dreams degrading into a part of the system

@[xander1087:38482] sorry, got posted before I was done editing and I can't delete or edit..

I refuse to call it "the faith" and conflate faith (hope) with Christianity.

"Treacherous this deceit, to have and yet lose yourself" / "The struggle to free myself of restraints, becomes my very shackles"

Somehow, I feel like this has a lot to do with my experience in the church. But it's also relatable to me in my struggles with addiction and codependency. Christianity is often offered as a solution to these but in reality often paradoxically makes it worse.

Someone grows up religious, they turn to hedonism to break the shackles of oppressive theology, which in turn is damaging, so they run back to christ, which is of no help as it is merely an illusion, one they are told will replace them if they die to themselves. This is the crux of the album. The manipulative paradoxical mindset that religions handling of our issues causes. Breaking this golden mirror. We are free from the cycles of inner death and rebirth that stagnate us.

I'll end with a quote from Terminal Illusions:

There's no god
Life is a trap
Unlock your mind
TRUST IN YOURSELF
Wake from the grip of the tongue
.....
....
The pressure on humanity
Has risen beyond control"

Meshuggah – Mind's Mirrors Lyrics 4 years ago
These lyrics make me think of my experience with Christianity. The paradox of trying to die to self and live thru Christ. The "golden mirror" of God that for so many becomes a source of psychogical confusion and dissociation. I had to eclipse this (I.e. deconvert) so that the reflection (made in his image) could be free. It's about the trap of the super ego. The narcisstic god complex. Why is the album called catch THIRTYTHREE (the age that Jesus was crucified.

We know Meshuggah's views on religion aren't favorable but I think it gets dismissed as simple lack of belief, when it's clear from so many of their songs that a main theme of their music is exploring the psychological harm of SPECIFICALLY Christianity.

The whole album Chaosphere is an image of the narcissistic aspects of Christianity. (I refuse to call it the "fsith"
