| The Drums – If He Likes It Let Him Do It Lyrics

I'm not exactly sure who but this is about pleasing someone sexually so you can win their favor to get by. It's where consent gets blurry for a lot of people. It brings up a terrible situation of "I don't want to do this, and they're not explicitly making me, but they have what I need and there's pressure on me". A couple of the lyrics have some double meanings such as "it was a happy time but now it's winter time and you're cold". This has two meanings the first is about seasonal depression. When there's sun and life you feel happy, but in winter you get very depressed and in the song the addition of "and you're cold" adds on a feeling that you're especially low. The other meaning is a bit more literal, if you live up north you would know that shelter during the winter can be the difference between life and death. When it's summer it's less of a struggle to get by aka "a happy time" but in the time of the song, it's winter time making you desperate for shelter. Next it goes on to "him" if you go with the first interpretation you really need intimacy and the only person you can go to is a person who will only do it in exchange for sexual favors or the only intimacy you have with anyone is sexual intimacy with him. Alternatively the second interpretation is that the person suffering is selling their body for a warm place to sleep or to pay for a warm place to sleep. The second verse tells us a bit more about him. From what I interpret it's showing what he's like and he's rather toxic. He first acts like he's not making you do anything "I could never be a soldier so i won't make you stand so tall" as a way of trying to make the person relax and if they become too confident "tonight's the night when there's light in your eyes" then puts immense pressure on the person with the "you say goodbye or I die" basically meaning he's threatening to cut the person off. To which the person does more to keep them. Whether it's the last bit of intimacy they have left or a person still willing to pay for their body they will do what it takes to keep him in their life. In the background there's sounds similar to wailing which I thought was the crying on the inside a person feels when they don't want to do something but can't tell anyone about it. |

| The Drums – Don't Be a Jerk, Jonny Lyrics

Jonny in the song is probably the lead singer Jonny pierce. I think this song is about how he's in a relationship with a girl not because he's in love with her but because he's trying to hide his sexuality and wants to leave her. In real life the lead singer is gay and this is a common method of hiding one's sexuality. However the issue is that the girl doesn't want the Jonny to leave so she says "don't be a jerk Jonny"and gets more and more desperate until Jonny says "believe in something you're full of horseshit" as a way of trying to get her to move on. Jonny starts to become bitter and dislike her because his attempts to leave her fail. Thus the line "you used to be so pretty but now you're just tragic". When someone uses the method of being in a heterosexual relationship to hide their sexuality they usually choose a person they admire. This explains why he compliments her several times despite also insulting her. Overall this song is just a situation so many closeted people get themselves into. |

| The Drums – Money Lyrics

Taking account Jonny's history, this is probably when he first moved to New York. It's no secret rent is high in NYC so he's a broke artist with no money to spend on his S.O. This explains why he doesn't have a car. As for the part about the other person he also mentioned in an interview that he had a boyfriend within a week of moving there. This results in some problems because first of all, due to having a very homophobic family in a small town he has pretty much no practice with dating. Secondly he's still very young and new to the world. The lyrics are pretty straight forward but I thought I might add context. |
