Taking account Jonny's history, this is probably when he first moved to New York. It's no secret rent is high in NYC so he's a broke artist with no money to spend on his S.O. This explains why he doesn't have a car. As for the part about the other person he also mentioned in an interview that he had a boyfriend within a week of moving there. This results in some problems because first of all, due to having a very homophobic family in a small town he has pretty much no practice with dating. Secondly he's still very young and new to the world. The lyrics are pretty straight forward but I thought I might add context.
