Vonnegut's book doesn't have much in common with this song. Richard Ashcroft references it though with the phrase 'so it goes'. Vonnegut quite annoyingly and ballistically uses this phrase every time he touches on the subject of death in slaughterhouse 5. Way to knock a tack in with a sledgehammer Kurt.... Ashcroft on the other hand deals much more with understatement. He isn't at all tempted to 'explain the punchline' over and over. |

Is it just me?, or does anyone else expect to hear "eeuuww!" Immedietely after the lyric 'the sick fluorescent light shimmering on their skin's. The 'stickily over-produced' bass that opens the song is just ace. Ths whole song drips with disillusionment with society, and the oasis-like sanctuary of his (hopefully!) Chaste and charming chick. A odyssey through modern society |

The song first struck me as an alcohol soaked love story between a low flying possibly homeless couple. The comments below are thought provoking though, so I'm spinning the disc and having a second burst of euphoria with this song. The plaintive, almost pleading guitar smacks of mild desperation and is almost haunting. It hooked me right away. I also couldn't have been happier and more surprised at Edwin brock's elusive monologue at the end. Such an original finale'. |

So much can be said about this song. The dual nature of the lyrics, indicate the ability of society and individuals to house both disgust and voracious appetite for horror without any apparent dissonance. The aggressive, grating sound and maniacs thrash-style vocals work perfectly for the anger and also the irony of it all. My favourite track on the album by far. |

The deep baritone vocal of this song shocked me then grew on me by the first refrain. It then gave gravitas to the huge theme of the song. The layered backing vocals add further. The poetic description of the restless swagger and graceful wonder of a river blow the socks off the usual "rollercoaster' metaphor for life. I've heard people tell me they are spiritual but not religious. I think I get that from this song. |

One of my favourite songs. Exuberance and optimism brought about by being in a good relationship. One of the human conditions prefixed by the albums title. A friend of mine recommended I listen to it, in a misguided attempt to introduce me to a song about god. He should have payed more attention to Mr Ashcrofts lyrics.. could there be anything better in life than feeling like this about someone else? A "cosmic library, a university". |
