Frank Sinatra – Cycles Lyrics 2 years ago
Heard this groovy tune way back in 1968 as I was getting ever closer to military draft age. The sentiments conveyed speak of life experiences I had yet to confront personally. The thoughts and concerns and mentions all made an impression upon me that has lasted over the decades.

Luck kept me from being drafted but misfortune led to entering the military to avoid abject homelessness. As I underwent the rigors of the military including two overseas tours this tune would regularly enter my thoughts and propel me forward in a positive way.

Decades go by and I enter the Web in 1995. As the Web grew in size and user base I sought out Gayle Caldwell, the writer of Cycles. Finding her I swapped a few e-mails thanking her for writing a song that actually influence my life in positive ways along with providing aural happiness. I am glad I did so because not long thereafter I learned that she had died. Sigh,

Thank you, Gayle. Your song with its lyrics and conveyed sentiments had a positive influence upon my life.

The Marshall Tucker Band – Last of the Singing Cowboys Lyrics 2 years ago
The lyrics are self-explanatory. I appreciate the kindness expressed towards the end of the song when the bartender asks the customer to assist with the blind old guy's fantasy of having a larger audience than he actually had.

This song was different from much of Marshall Tucker's song list. They were more of a Southern Rock band but this song has a jazzier edge to it setting it apart in an interesting manner from much of their other output.

Arlo Guthrie – When a Soldier Makes It Home Lyrics 2 years ago
First heard this awesome tune at the Vietnam Veteran Radio Web station https://vietnamvetradio.org/

I was impressed with the lyrics, the musicianship and the singing that conveyed a lot of emotions. The vets at American Legion Post 639 in Springfield, MO that have heard the song have also voiced their pleasure with a song that we can relate to.

The sentiments conveyed are realistic but at least the military is not looked down upon as much as was common back in the Vietnam era. Each veteran serving either overseas or at home in the States has their own experiences and interpretations of events making it difficult for one song to be all-encompassing but Arlo Guthrie has performed a near-miracle by creating lyrics that are about as all-encompassing as can be considering the complexity of the topics covered.

Neil Young – Long May You Run Lyrics 2 years ago
The references to a motor vehicle are clear to me and make sense. However, when the song was jest entering the airwaves for the first time many years ago a close family member had just died. The lyrics were interpreted by me, though I knew it was a personal choice and not the intention of the song writer, as also relating to the life and current non-existence of a loved one.

Nobody alive knows for sure what lays beyond this mortal life, if there IS anything there!!! What I did do was use the song as wishing the departed a "good run" at whatever awaited them beyond this mortal coil.

Edward Bear – Last Song Lyrics 2 years ago
One of the easier songs to give meaning to since the lyrics themselves make amply clear what the singer is thinking.

Off he goes leaving that gal behind with a final song aimed at her. I wonder what song(s) he wrote for the next gal in his life?

Gordon Lightfoot – The Circle Is Small Lyrics 5 years ago
Howdy folks, Gordon Lightfoot recorded two studio versions of this song. The 1968 version is more simplistically performed than the 1978 version that has more recording engineer input and slightly different lyrics.

Both versions tell the same sordid story of a man whose significant other (wife? girl friend?) is cheating on him with another man and that he can tell by the various clues and cues she portrays when they are together.

The cheated-on fellow tells her that leaving him is okay but that lying about or that refusing to reveal her cheating ways is wrong.

A sad song that serves as a warning to any gender.

Neil Diamond – Solitary Man Lyrics 5 years ago
This tune warning others of the foibles of females has struck a chord with the ever-growing Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW) movement. To various degrees and extents MGTOW-adhereing males are either avoiding females in totality or are limiting their interactions and, when interacting, are doing so only in ways that the male allows. No more catering to female whims and demands. Basically, it is either my way or hit the highway, female.
