This song seems like it's about a relationship ending and Zakk basically saying that even though it hurts for the both of them life has it's up and downs and he'll eventually move on, although it will have a lasting impact on his life. The first verse is basically saying he's said all he could and wants her to do the same since after this he's leaving it behind and not looking back. The second verse where he talks about lies becoming truth he could be saying that they had fundamental differences that he disagrees with the reasons why the relationship wasn't working out but recognizes she feels the same way and he can't make her see it the way he does. The line, "I shall forgive but I won't forget that day" implies that he will forgive both her and himself for the things that went wrong and splitting up on that day but he will never forget it. It's possible too that this whole song is implying a split that wasn't exactly mutual. Maybe she wanted to break things off and he didn't necessarily want to split yet and try to work things out but he realizes he can't make her do what he wants to so the best thing for him to do is just accept it for what it is and move on. Then in the choruses he's basically saying to her everything will be ok in the end and he will forgive her, but he's never going to forget the pain of the split. |

| Warning – Footprints Lyrics | 3 years ago |
| I\'m really not 100% sure what this song means, and I especially can\'t break down what each line means, I think this song is either about the singer giving up on the relationship that is falling apart, or either that giving into the weight of his heartbreak. As he reflects upon the failed relationship, he tries so hard to fight all the sadness and pain and be strong but ultimately in the end it wins, it gets the best of him. He is defeated and weakened, and can no longer fight it, thus he surrenders to his ex-lover\'s side, in the sense that he let her destroy him. | |

| I think this song is about an abusive ex trying to get back into her life, trying to ask for forgiveness and come into her "house of mercy" but she knows he won't change, he's only going to make her life more miserable, so she's made up her mind and shuts him out of her life completely. | |
| The Black Keys – In Our Prime Lyrics | 5 years ago |

This is my favorite Black Keys song of all time, and God is it so amazing and criminally underrated. Dan wrote the songs for Turn Blue when Dan was going through a very rough and bitter divorce with his first wife, and I think this song and a lot of the other songs on this album really reflects his emotions he felt during the time, but it's definitely at it's strongest in this song and Weight of Love imo. Pertaining to the meaning of this song, I think mostly Dan is reflecting on and lamenting a better time, when they were in their prime, or when things were at their best before it went sour, and he's saying that those days are long gone, they already made their mark a long time ago. He feels like friends no longer try to help him out or encourage him but just tell him or try to lead him to believe everything is fine or good when it's not, or either that tell him the same thing over and over again (bullshit serenade) and he's just tired of carrying the weight on his own, constantly hoping for a better time. I'm not exactly sure what the chorus means. Like every (other's?) love that hovers in my mind, I think what that means is he's seeing other people's success in relationships and comparing it to what they had when they were at their best or what they could of had, or it could mean that the memories of their prime continually haunt him. The house it burned but nothing there was mine, is more than likely a reference to an accusation Dan made against his ex wife during their divorce that she tried to set fire to their house, but I think what someone else said on here might be accurate, that everything they had burned down, but in the end, he can just no longer care anymore. Then the guitar solo on this is just fucking gold. It literally sounds like just giving up, because everything is too fucked up to try anymore, and it just steadily fades out, just like his love for his wife and what he used to have, and eventually his motivation goes with it. Good God you can just feel the pull and tugs of the strings as he's playing the solo and it just hits so hard in the feels. Amazing song. |

| Bon Iver – A Song for a Lover of Long Ago Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Correction, they said in the video it's like the ring on a bar left from a drink reminding him of a wedding ring, which I think they got from one of the interpretations on this website. That makes sense also, cus it's like everywhere he goes, every little thing reminds him of her, even something as little as that, thus it hints at what he had or what he could of had. | |

So here's my interpretations as to what specifically each verse means. Ring on the bar Clinging water mark It hints at what I had And calls up what I can't So someone made a comment in a reaction video to this song that "ring on the bar" could mean ringing up a drink at a bar...and as much as that kind of ruins the song for me just a tad for whatever reason, it makes sense. He's using alcohol to cope with his problems, thus why it calls up what he can't, which is the ability to forget her... but I like to think instead it means certain things remind him of her and she has left a "clinging watermark" or an imprint on him that he can't seem to get rid of, and ring on the bar just means sort of memories ringing and resonating like a vibration. I have also heard rain on the bard, which if that's the case is an imagery to more or less to set up a depressing tone. I think the next line actually goes Wring you out of me Shake my memory free Can't squelch the molten soul Can't chase away the hole To me what this means is to wring like the water from a towel the memories from his mind, and what he means by can't squelch the molten soul is he can't squelch the fire and passion he has for her, thus giving him a molten soul, a burning sensation all physically mentally, and emotionally. Can't chase away the hole is self explanatory. If it is can't squelch them open-souled, that again could go back to the use of alcohol, open-souled meaning being sober, so he can't do it without the use of alchohol. If it is can't squelch them open souled in the non alcoholic context, then that just means he can't be open about his problems or either embrace an open mind that would allow new hope or possibilities for someone else. Ring (rain), sound the alarm The (and) sting (stain) my broken There's a faintest (famous?) violinist buried in my gut There are chances and choices Sometimes you just have to cut This verse is the hardest for me to interpret. If it's ring sound the alarm, that could either mean he's in an emotional crisis, the ringing of another drink, or possibly just again meaning that the ringing of his memories sounded an alarm, or his sadness, which all of these could go with the next line the sting my broken heart or stain my broken heart because all of these things cause him to be stained or either make his broken heart just that much worse. If it's rain sound the alarm, that could mean that the rain is a reflection of how he feels and is thus sounding an alarm. From the way he sings this line too, it sounds almost like he's desperate and giving up hope, so it's a reflection of the feeling of a defeated state. However, the faintest violinist buried in my gut, I was completely baffled as to what that could have meant for the longest time, but I think I understand it and it's supposed to mean she is at the back of his mind and he is constantly reminded of her, like as if a violinist has been buried in his gut playing always playing a song that reminds him of her. Also... don't want to go back to the alcohol interpretation, especially since I don't like it, but it's still a possibility none the less... but it could also be, "there's a pint of guiness buried in my gut" which is self explanatory. So is the next line there are chances and choices sometimes you just have to cut... you just gotta let that person go no matter how much you wanna hold on. As for the chorus, we all know what it means. He tries to do whatever he can to forget her, but she just keeps coming back to him whatever he does. His shaking hands meaning his trembling emotional state. So there you have it. That's my in depth interpretation of this song. I really, REALLY hope the interpretation of alcohol isn't true, because for one it makes it less abstract and relatable, and two I don't think it's as meaningful and fits with the over all song that way. I doubt that is the case though, the lyrics seem very poetic and appear to be trying to represent a current emotional state that appeals to everyone and something everyone can relate to, which is heart break, rather than the way he tries to drown out his heartache, which I think if it were about getting drunk to forget her the elegance and beauty of the guitar and overall song aren't complimented very well by the lyrics in that regard and it's not as relatable for everyone since not everyone resorts to that as a coping strategy. At the same time though, Justin is kind of slurred in the way he sings the song, so that could be trying to represent a drunken state, but it could also just be because he was obviously having a hard time trying to keep it together while playing since he did cry towards the end. |

Overall though, great song, definitely one of my favorites. Sarah Jarosz is a great folk song writer, especially when it comes to sad songs. We've all been there, where there's someone who has seen a lot of stuff and we really want to help them, but just aren't sure if we really can. |

I think this song is about Sarah sympathizing with someone who has been broken and has trust issues, which she can feel their pain, which makes her want to get close to them, either as a friendship or maybe it's sort of an attraction for a relationship, but she doesn't know if they'll mistrust her and run away from her, so she isn't so sure if she can let them in. She isn't completely sure if she can handle the burden of dealing with their problems either. In terms of what she actually is saying about the lost dog, it seems like it is someone who has been betrayed and mistreated by other people who they were supposed to find "home" with, so their friends and family. They then run from their problems and hide all the pain, thus the lines "home's not a word you say something made you stray off like a feather in the wind" and "why you burying bones out in the yard?" |
