The Lovin' Spoonful – Coconut Grove Lyrics 6 years ago
"It's all from havin' someone knowin'
Just which way your head is blowin' "

This song is about the blissful frame of mind you get put in whenever you have someone you love and connect with in your life. You no longer care about the rat race... all of life's stress seems to fade to the periphery as you prioritize your connection to that person. Life becomes a weekend at the beach, a drive down to Coconut Grove.

The Turtles – Let Me Be Lyrics 6 years ago
Simple and amazing song. It's about boldly denying the pressure that other people put on you, and realizing that the only way to stay sane when living in a culture you don't agree with is to go on being yourself.

Milton Mapes – Lonesome Town Lyrics 6 years ago
A great cover of the 1950's original by Ricky Nelson. It's about the despair of heartbreak, and how the feeling can be so powerful that you wonder if you'll ever even be able to escape it- it may as well be a town that you move to, and never leave.

The Reels – This Guy's In Love (With You) Lyrics 6 years ago
This song is about how no matter how old we get, love will always have a childish aspect to it. Both people in the song are in love, yet neither has said anything to each other about it. They're talking with friends about their "secret crush" instead of actually getting together. The narrator's "hands are shaking" and throughout the song he considers the tragic possibility that maybe his love will never make their feelings known to him.

Twin Peaks – I Found a New Way Lyrics 6 years ago
My favorite line from this song is the last one: "I can see the dark sky coming, and I know it's only the rain."

It's about the enthusiasm of self-discovery- of finding some new thing that opens up your perspective and makes you excited about life, and the natural feeling of wanting to share that energy with others. And how when this happens, you feel so in control, almost to the point of being able to "see the future" or feeling like everything might as well be the same since there's nothing you can't conquer.

The reason why the last line is my favorite is because it seems to indicate that the narrator has already been through some tough shit and overcome it, so those dark clouds on the horizon look awfully familiar, and he's not afraid of seeing them anymore.

Twin Peaks – Making Breakfast Lyrics 6 years ago
This song is about being young and excited and meeting people and doing things... but then also realizing that all the great things you're experiencing will one day be the source of great pain since eventually, one by one, you will lose them all... but then stashing that depressing idea away and going back to having fun! :D This song is as simple and enjoyable as making breakfast.

The Black Keys – Shine a Little Light Lyrics 6 years ago
This song is awesome.

I think it's about getting older, perhaps feeling a bit isolated, and feeling like some of the connections to your past are fading. But then also realizing that just because you feel this way, doesn't mean you're going to let the darkness creep in- the apathy of thinking "we all decompose and disappear." You're going to stand up and keep on moving. You're going to shine a light on your soul and find the strength to push on through anything.

The Rolling Stones – Don't Be a Stranger Lyrics 6 years ago
I love this song. Super upbeat and easy-going, with a message of never being afraid to reconnect with a person, whether it be romantic or otherwise.

I usually think of this song as being addressed to two different people. The first person he's talking to is a friend of his who has maybe abandoned a lot of the people he knows for "greener pastures." And while a lot of the people he abandoned are probably resentful and don't really ever want to talk with him again, the narrator of the song is saying to swing by and hang out whenever, because after all, "what are friends for?" The narrator doesn't mind if the person disappeared or took a mental break, and they haven't spoken in some time. He just likes to have company, and doesn't take anything personally.

The second person the narrator addresses is obviously an "old flame" of some sort. He's basically saying "a decade has transpired since we last saw each other, but it's all good. Oh, and by the way... you've still got it..." Which is kind of funny, but it's also pretty common with the Stones. They view love as pretty fluid, and something to just be enjoyed when it can be.

Father John Misty – The Palace Lyrics 6 years ago
I think it's just a song about a temporary need to disconnect from your life, although maybe not in the most healthy way. For example, it seems like he's put up a bit of a barrier between him and the people he works with and the people he cares about, by staying tucked away in his own metaphorical "palace." And of course as he continues to inhabit this palace of his (a tongue-in-cheek reference to his ability to afford services that will do his cleaning and food prep for him, like a hotel room or an apartment where he only orders food and has a cleaning service) he starts to have all these loose thoughts and notions about things that may help distract him or fill some void, like getting a dog and wondering what he would name it if he did.

He also mentions he wrote a poem, and makes a somewhat sarcastic allusion to being in "the poem zone"- another hint that he was feeling sentimental- or perhaps navel-gazing a bit- and in the moment had been reaching out for some way to express a thought or feeling, and not necessarily an extremely happy thought or feeling.

I like how in the end he alludes to the fact that he reached out to someone and is "ready to come home." Which in itself is another big clue for what sort of position/state of mind he occupies throughout the song- one of being disconnected and away from his usual routine and surroundings.

I think his refrain of "I'm in way over my head" is just about life in general. Even though we are often aware of our current mental state- for example, knowing when we feel "at home" vs. "in a foreign place"- in a way it never really matters what we feel. We are human, and even if we're feeling "at home", "comfortable," "at peace," "happy"... even when we feel all these ways, the truth is that we are forever "way in over our heads" at the same time, just by being here.
