The impact of Maynards relationship with his mom and his appreciation for her is also explained a bit more in Pusicfers "Momma Sed" in which he is taught how to handle adversity, disappointment and change via his mothers words, advice and experiences.... She tells him that he will go through many tests and deal with a lot of pain in life but he needs to remain faithful, stay strong and do the best he can "take the high road... take it like a man... this too shall pass". It's actually an interesting tie-in with Judith when you realize that she is giving him this advice after suffering serious adversity herself and retaining her faith. In the Video for Moma Sed, Maynard is seen walking through the desert with a bottle in his hand that says "Caduceus" which is the universal symbol for medicine.... which he eventually lets go of very intentionally and it drops to the ground and shatters... I don't know for sure but I would guess he wrote this song while his mother was sick and she lost the function of her legs.... he may have lost faith in the medical treatment that she received or lost faith completely.... she may have been giving him prospective on this change in her life and how to handle his own change... to use it as an example and not to let it make him bitter or cynical but to always keep his head up and do the right thing even when things are at their worst. |
