"Cathedrals have tried in vain To show the image of your face" -Cathedrals- probably the most beautiful pieces of Christian architecture/art ever- cannot even come close to the majesty and awesome beauty of God! Isaiah 40:18-20 lay this out pretty clearly. "But we are, by your design The signature of divine" -As His creation, we are made in His image(Genesis 1:27) "The fortunes of kings and queens Are wasted chasing what we've seen" - Everyone who isn't a follower of Jesus spends their entire lives chasing after things that seem valuable (money, fame, comfort, etc.). But nothing can compare to God's awesomeness (Psalm 145:3; Psalm 113:4-6) "Cause we are, by your reprieve The beauty framed by your suffering" - We are made beautiful by accepting the salvation available through Christ's suffering for our sins (John 4:16; Isaiah 1:18) "Take me, and pull me through Cause I can't move without you" -We can do nothing without God's involvement in our lives (John 15:5) "I won't leave you alone, you say It will be okay" -God will never leave or betray us (Deuteronomy 31:8; Joshua 1:9) The chorus is simply praise to God for His involvement in our lives and how much higher His ways are than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9) |

I love the metaphor in the chorus! "Yeah in this wasteland where I'm livin' There is a crack in the door filled with light And it's all that I need to get by" - In more than one way, this world is like a wasteland. It's overrun by sin and temptation and darkness. - The "crack in the door filled with light" is the Gospel. throughout His ministry, Jesus likens the Gospel to a light in the darkness (Psalm 119:105; John 1:5-9; John 8:12; John 12:35-37). A dark room is overcome by the light rushing in from a cracked door. The Gospel is that light. -"it's all that I need to get by" is simply stating that having the Gospel is all that he needs to get by in this life (Isaiah 40:31; Romans 15:13; Romans 8:24-25). Lastly, "Oh if God is on my side Yeah if God is on my side Oh if God is on my side Who can be against me" - If we have the Gospel (God on our side), then what can overcome us?(Romans 8:31) |

The meaning of this song is pretty clear: Life doesn't seem to go by too quickly; then one day, you look by and suddenly realize how much things have changed. The songwriter stresses the importance of cherishing the moments we have to dance, smile, and laugh. Because one day we're going to look back on our lives and realize we've completely wasted it worrying and working. |

I've been trying to figure out what the bridge of this song means for quite a while now, and I just wanted to share my thoughts on it... "I am on the fence about nearly everything I've seen" - Like stated in other comments, I think that this is simply a metaphor explaining how we are constantly battling with whether we should get the credit for things God is doing through us. We are "walking the fence" between humility and pride. "And we're all strangers passing through a place and time afternoon Life is but a vision in a window that we're peeking through" -Here, the singer is being humbled as he realizes that we're all equal in God's sight. We're all going through the same life together- no one is greater/better than anyone else (Galatians 3:28). -The second line points out how short our lives are (Psalm 39:5)) "A helpless conversation with a man who says he cares a lot It's a passive confrontation about who might throw a punch or not" -I'm not sure what this part means yet. Any thoughts on it would be appreciated! "We are all transgressors, we're all sinners, we're all astronauts" -Again, he's recognizing that no person is greater than another. We are simply being obedient and open to God's direction. He uses our willing hearts to complete His will.We have no reason to be prideful! -I love this metaphor calling Christians 'astronauts'. We are strangers in a foreign world (John 17:6)(1 Chronicles 29:15). "So if you're beating death then raise your hand but shut up if you're not" -I think that this line gives us the main reason why we should be humble about what God does through us. It highlights the fact that Jesus is the only eternal and powerful one, and He is the only one deserving of any praise. Everyone else should just "shut up" about themselves. |

I love love love the chorus of this song! Much like the weather, life is filled with so many uncertainties: Will I succeed/fail? What will happen next year? What will happen tomorrow? Will I be okay? Much like we cannot control the wind patterns or precipitation, we cannot control what happens in our lives. The only constant that we can really hold on to is the fact that we have Jesus and our salvation. Anything can happen to us, but absolutely nothing can take that from us. This should bring us so much comfort! We cannot be plucked from the hand of God. |

When I listen to this song, I've always thought of it from Jesus' point of view as He thinks of dying on the cross for our sins. "So tell me why I should run for cover At the sound of the coming thunder All I hear is the cry of my lover So take your shot I won't turn back" Even though He knows exactly how much pain (physical and spiritual) he'll feel as he's tortured and killed (not to mention taking on the weight of humanity's sins), Jesus obeyed God and never turned back. He also fits the metaphor: "faithful like a soldier who's answered to the call/ even when his back's against the wall". God sent Him to earth to complete His will. Jesus obeyed God even to the point of death on a cross. Overall, this song just screams to me the vast, unending and unbending love that Jesus has for each of us. We are his "lovers", and He will stop at nothing to be with us for eternity. |
