No matter the storm, he will stand his ground and keep his mind's ear focused on his lover. I love this song.
I love this song, it's one of my favourites on the album.
It makes me think of a guy in war, and all he can think of is the love of his life, so much that even though storms are coming, even though he's being shot at, he won't give up on her, he won't turn back from her love.
Personally for me I think of Jesus, and how in this life the world can be against us, and we have enemies, and there are so many life storms, I won't run back from Jesus. He is my lover, his voice is the one I listen for, and I'm answering his call.
When I listen to this song, I've always thought of it from Jesus' point of view as He thinks of dying on the cross for our sins.

Even though He knows exactly how much pain (physical and spiritual) he'll feel as he's tortured and killed (not to mention taking on the weight of humanity's sins), Jesus obeyed God and never turned back.
He also fits the metaphor:
"faithful like a soldier who's answered to the call/ even when his back's against the wall".
God sent Him to earth to complete His will. Jesus obeyed God even to the point of death on a cross.
Overall, this song just screams to me the vast, unending and unbending love that Jesus has for each of us. We are his "lovers", and He will stop at nothing to be with us for eternity.
