He was absent and only cared about them on paper ("I give a check to tax deductible charity organizations"). I think that that lyric is saying, "I provide for you, what more do you want from me?". And then the lyric "Still, things could be much worse" is referencing that although the fathers alcohol abuse has poisoned their relationships in and out of the family, he has never hurt them. | |
